Christina, good topic. There are as many reasons to stop painting as there are to start in the first place or try again after a hiatus, be it long or short term. Things like basic life, competing interests, raising families, bad relationships, traumas of various kinds, physical and mental illness. It's not quite like "riding a bicycle", but close, to start again, if you still have a passion for it. Just pick up a sketch book and draw for a while, soon you will be "graduating" to painting if it's been a while. With the internet, and great vids like this one, it is much easier, to find inspiration, encouragement, and instruction, today than ever before. Plus, if you are having issues in your life otherwise it may be the "best medicine" for your physical and mental health. When you are "in the zone" painting nothing else matters but that. And the whole world outside is blocked; and, in many ways, should be, especially now a days!! Happy art making everyone!! : )
I am slowly coming out of a long period of not really creating and this is helpful… I struggle so much with starting at the moment and the impostor syndrome (inner critic to you I guess), which renders me virtually incapable… it is very helpful to hear that this is not a unique problem, some might say it’s a universal artist problem and it’s how we each deal with it is what separates us… as my therapist said yesterday - don’t concentrate on how, just do… (very Yoda of her 😅)
I got a pack of little 4x6 canvases, which are amazingly accessible when you're feeling rusty. The stakes are so low that you can't go wrong. Often I end up wiping them off for another day, and a little more mojo soaks in for next time❤
My down periods can come in a day or two. But once I select brushes and squeeze oils in the color scheme I want, things roll out without thinking. Good ideas. Sweet little jar. I think you are correct, Godot never arrives.
Hey Christina, I just wanted to tell that feeling of being rusty is not actually rusty! when you don't paint or generally when you don't create artwork you are taking lots of info and qualities in without letting them out. I personally use this technic to get myself thirsty for making an artwork and in the meantime I take control over all these qualities that I am taking in. when I start to create an artwork after this period there is a state of being confused and it is because of those prisoned qualities. the best way to use this as a technic is to spend that time period with creating artworks in your mind without any tools... Try it if you want to see the results and if you are interested... Take care! :)
excellent advice, since most art is a "mind exercise" at its very basis, often an epic bout of problem solving with the resultant piece of work just being a "document of that struggle", to produce a "good painting", for example, in any genre, in any medium! At least that's what I heard some wise person/artist say once upon a time!! ;D
That’s a good idea to practice on art before doing big art stuff after you taking a break from art studio. Point taken. Cheers. 😎😎😎🔥🔥🔥
Thank you! Glad you liked it :)

Yes, that is a great idea! I have a lot of “wipers” as well haha
Very timely! I just got home from vacation with covid on top of it. I'm finally feeling better but just not painting yet. Thanks for the inspiration
I feel you, I got food poisoning on my vacation 😂 oh well. Hope this helps you get back into it! You got this ❤️
Always good advice you have, I love how your "style" pops up even in a quick sketch exercise. 😊
Thank you!

I also find that getting my materials ready can help me get into a flow. Getting started is usually the hardest part!
