The sound is definitely affected by the single reed mouthpiece IMO.
5 years too late, but I have this intonation error too with my B-flat paperclip extension. At first I had 1in toneholes and it was stuffy and definitely enjoyed that "squeaking" sound. I have since upgraded to 1¾in toneholes and it definitely has a nice bark with no squeaking on the top tones (written B to G) and occasionally some on the bottom (written G-flat to D). If I were to design an entire octo I'd see about getting my hands on a Linton mouthpiece and reed to dedicate to the project (or a copy of one using your amazing 3d design skills!)
Wha.... Uhh.... Huh??
Where can I buy this Low C extension?
@@albertvogl9943 I’ll have them for sale on my website JDwoodwind.com in a few months.

I am very interested in the clarinets as I play both Bb soprano and Bb bass. I clearly wonder what will be the lowest clarinet and I designed my own double contrabass clarinet and until I notice you came in with your own invention. I do however thought of not replicating your invention, and instead thought how to compact this type of clarinet and achieve similar results. I been unable to put this is prototype because I am still in high school and it just stupid how unfortunate my circumstances are.
but I'm learning about what they are like. Since I have been a musician for a long time and I play string and percussion instruments. but no winds
amazing. I bought a cr 10 smart and I want to do all that!!!

What happened to the octocontralto and octocontrabass projects!? 😡😡😡
@@XR-REACTS still working on them. Projects like these are important for my other projects. Now I know I can make long 3D printed/carbon fiber keys.
@Jared_De_Leon ohhh ok my bad 😃😃😃
Thank you sooooo much! I was panicking !
Thx Jared! This was very helpful, as, I am making a homemade metal alto clarinet, and this video was very helpful in getting my project started!😊

it probably takes the lungs of god to get anything above mezzo piano on that thing

Oh my god
Is there a way to purchase this extension ? I cannot find it in your shop, is that still avaible ?
@@varek9019 it needs to be custom made for the instrument.
Oh how I wished I could 3D print a piccolo.
Maybe you can bring the low C key up and around in an “L” shape so it is both underneath the low C# and to the right of the D. Kind of like the low Bb key on old Buescher saxophones. But I would also recommend you dome the keys somewhat to make for easily rolling between them (like bassoon thumb keys.)
Off brand saxophone
it’s not working help
I mean, I wouldn’t say it’s useless. I can see how this could be useful for single reed players transitioning to double reed instruments
Any news on the base oboe .stl?
use a leafblower for C-2
The Mighty Quinn reports that the bore is 30mm, which is the same as metal Leblanc contras. But I'm not sure that makes sense, because at 3:58 you say there is an adapter that allows the use of a standard Bb contra mouthpiece.
Fantastic work! I know Harrison Chiang also made a low C extension for the Vito and Straight LeBlanc. I hope these extensions will be more widespread in the future. I'm really interested in a low C extension for both alto and contra alto clarinets. Seeing it done on a contrabass makes me more confident that my long-held fantasies can be made into reality.
thanks
How did you learn how to make instruments such as the length of the instrument and the tone hole spacing
Amazing work, you mighta just made the cost of these horns go up hahahhh
This gives Vito contra players so much hope! You are amazing!
B.E. made about ten LC extension for this model nearly 20 jears ago.
❤❤❤❤❤
Do you sell these by chance?
@@nettiemarie2556 yes, they will be available on JDwoodwind.com in the coming months.
Would this work on the Leblanc 7182 model?
@@noahdavis-iq5vc it won’t unfortunately. I will need to borrow a Vito for a few months at some point to make one.
This is fantastic!! If only I'd had this back in the late 1990s when I was playing this exact model in high school! I just thought of something, though--how often is low C# even called for in contra parts? Could this be further simplified by only having low C and D?
I'm so tired rn from practicing (my marching band is performing at the BOA superregionals tmrw, and even though we arent being judged, we've been practicing a lot), but jared de leon uploads make it better. Only thing left to do after this is sleep
idk about you all but the single reed hurts me, but I want to be a marching oboe so…
They really cost $30,000 ??? 😱
Unrelated to the extension: let me ask as a saxophone player if that long ascending tube after the mouthpiece doesn't lead to condensation water issues. I would assume that after a short while a puddle of water builds up in the bend where the mouthpiece is attached !? This would annoy me a lot.
@@___Chris___ it does unfortunately and yes it’s a pain to have to pour out so much condensation every time. I’ve actually designed a neck with a water key to solve this!
Would it be possible to put the D and C# keys side-by-side, then put the C key below both of them?
nice... i'm playing one right now also.
YES!!!!
I have a 342 and this gives me a lot of hope for the future! I will buy this once you're (hopefully) selling them!
mate! you've done it again! well done, sounds amazing! tuning seems pretty good too! what you're doing for the contra-playing community is so pivotal and should be applauded. Keeping these old instruments relevant and affordable is so great, I hope heaps of them stay in use for ages to come. are you offering the 3D print files for sale? I reckon there'd be real interest and demand for it, along with your awesome 3D printed mouthpieces. I'll have to come visit the states some time and soak up all the nerdiness at Clarinetfest or something haha.
Great job you always make great work on your woodwinds! Btw, what's thr outro music called? I'd love to play it on my Clarinet!
this is awesome, ive been trying to make an extension that goes between the body and the bell of my alto clarinet so i can match the lowest note of the basset horn, but i was having trouble doing so, it would be neat to have a video going over how to figure out tone hole placement, and just how to build an extension in general. thanks!
This is very cool.
Bravo! That will breathe new life into those straight metal contras. Any thought of doing that for the plastic ones?
@@iwoods1 thanks! It is possible but I will need to find one to borrow for a few months.
@@Jared_De_Leon just to add to this: would a similar extension for Eb Contras also be on the table?
AWESOME CONTENT MAN! Also i have a weird question: what is the peg diameter to your paperclip contra? I dont have a peg for mine and i want to make a new one
@@Gear100 thanks! They are 7mm, which is also the same as most bass clarinets.

You remind me of an experience when I was trying to make it as a repair tech.. someone came to me with a very curious ringkey oboe he bought off Ebay, about 100 years old, conservatory mechanism *and* a thumbplate, automatic octaves, three trill keys on the top joint where modern oboes have only two, very strange cluster of 4 keys (F/E♭/B♮/B♭) on the bottom joint where modern oboes have the butterfly E♭/B♮/B♭ and the F lever is separate... I was working on that piece of junk (100 years of benign neglect), the hinge rods were all rusted and seized, I was never able to get thumbplate to function and about a month into it, decided to play-test it to see what my progress had accomplished... The oboe was in high pitch, the client had already paid me $400...🙄Purchases on ebay... An adventure in itself...
