    Will we ever get a video on your bass oboe?? Would love to see an instruction video for your 3d printed one

    Great seeing this kind of how-I-make-it video, seeing the end results is nice but seeing the process adds a lot

    Thanks a lot for this video and generously sharing your ideas, I have been searching a lot to find a good bocal making resource which is suitable for home use! Trying to make one for Cor Anglais

    Yamaha fills the tube with wax or rubber to bend brass without damaging it.

      I tried to find pitch which is what a lot of manufacturers use, but I can't seem to find it anywhere!

      @@Jared_De_Leon I think bitumen is the same thing. Pitch is perhaps a bit of an old fashioned name.

      The old techniques call for metallic pitches which tend to make the tubes solid to be bent. See the making of baroque trumpets.

    Cool
    And I want to see more octocontralto and octocontrabass

      Hopefully getting a shop next year so when I do I will hopefully rebuild better versions of both!

    if you were to make this with the exact same dimensions as in the video, could you use a bassoon reed? and if so, could you use the bassoon reed to play the bass oboe?

    I hope someday you make some 3D printed hecklephones for sell! I would definitely buy

    Oh man, this makes me want to make a clarinet with the same fingering system as a saxophone, but I have no idea how/where to start

    Interesting that you used frozen soapy water to try to avoid kinks while bending the bocal. Note that sometimes when they want to bend copper pipes they will put fine sand into the pipe before bending to avoid kinks. Just something different to experiment. No guarantees.

    At 3:00 you score the brass to mark your cut line using, looks like a knife. How did you score it deep enough to break it?

    • @Jared_De_Leon
      @Jared_De_Leon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I scored it around 100 times, I just didn’t show it in the video since it took so long.

    What I find to be particularly odd is if you were a woodwind atelier, why couldn’t you just use solid brass stock and turn it on a lathe instead of going through the trouble of hammering it together from sheet metal?

    • @lincolnrowe4552
      @lincolnrowe4552 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would waste so much material using a block of brass, and would need very specific lathe bits to bore out such a long tapered hole. Using sheet metal uses a lot less material

    Is that silver solder? I thought flux is required for that

    • @Jared_De_Leon
      @Jared_De_Leon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I just didn’t show the part where I added flux

    Is a homemade heckelphone project in the works??

    • @Jared_De_Leon
      @Jared_De_Leon  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely considering it, key work is the main issue but I already have some ideas on how to make it work.

    It's a very different application, but this video reminded me strongly of how steel bicycle fork blades are bent. Maybe it will provide some ideas? th-cam.com/video/m1SAVV7nU-w/w-d-xo.html
    I've also heard of filling tubes with bone-dry sand until packed, capping the ends, and heating the whole tubing/sand before bending to prevent the tube from going out of round.
    Good luck! Your videos are always interesting.
