Reviving Jabiru
Australia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 2 ธ.ค. 2021
I found this 89 year old canoe stern motor boat in the Port Stephens NSW area in 2021. I'd been looking for a suitable boat for a couple of years, but didn't find anything that I liked the look of. I liked the look of Jabiru, but there was not too much else about her that pleased me. Jabiru is still on dry land, now in a tent at Mount Kuring-Gai and is finally getting some care and attention.

Awesome work
Thank you.
Just wondering, how did you find working with polyester resin versus the epoxy? I assume you fiberglassed the hull using epoxy resin... Is the polyester smell really that bad as some say?
Yes, much more pungent than epoxy and very much shorter pot life.
ingenious method never witnessed that before well done guys
Sorry to say it's not a new invention. There are very slick vertsions used to roll smaler boats as well as cars. A good one on TH-cam shows a Kombi van being worked on.
Get well soon.
Thank you. Mending well now.
Get well soon.
Thank you. On the mend now and back to work tomorrow.
Thanks Phil. Great video well done flip loved seeing it and the suspended work bench. Many great ideas here.
Thank you Joseph, The bench is for laying up wet glass. It qwill be used again for the derckls and cabin tops,
There is just something cool about getting things done alone. Especially when it should have taken 2-3 people
Yes. My friend Roger is there a lot of the time, buit not always. Alone, it just takles a bit longer. Roger helped with the second wheel, but we talked so much I forgot to turn the camera on.
Its became a beautiful boat Fhil👍👌👌
Thank you. I'm very happy with the way it's going btogether again.
Milestone moment Phil. Well done mate. Good luck with your eye healing. Been there. Cheers! Rick

Hi, Phil, being anal about safety is never a mistake. I am keen to see the fitout now. Your meticulous attitude to the hull should see a beaut finish. Cheers
Thank you Bruce. I'm looking forward to getting on with it.
👌
Bonza Phil! Thanks for sharing. 👍

Thanks Kerry. That one is a bit of a milestone.
Hi Phil, and team, what a fantastic job you did turning jabiru the right way up she looks fantastic. I’m so excited for you all wonderful to see your grandson’s there because this is their inheritance learning how to work on wooden boats And appreciate in them , Cliff From Logan city, Queensland Australia I’m on the big island
Thank you, Cliff. Glad you enjoyed the episode.
Phill, you always understate your work. This way of rolling the boat is something I’ve seen before but you executed it flawlessly. I take my hat off to you, great job. I hope your eye recovery goes as well as rolling Jabiru did
Thasnmk. My eye is good, just needs time.
Ahhh I love it! an old hand shipwright can solve any problem and do it gracefully
Thank you.
absolutely amazing watching the flip!
Glad you liked it!
Innovation and determination will do it every time. Congratulations my heart was in my mouth a couple of times but I had no doubt you would do it.
Thank you so much!
Ingenious method of turning a boat over. I wasn't holding my breath, well, only a bit 😂. Well done. 😊
Glad you enjoyed it
Always good to see a good flip! Congratulations and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I’m going back to watch your earlier work on Jabiru to pick up on all the little details. What a big job but you have done a lot of great work with each repair improving on the original construction.
Thank you. I'm glad you are enjoying it.
As always, I wait in anticipation for your ongoing episodes Phil, I admire your craftsmanship which has given me many hints.
Thanks Petert. I'm glad you are enjoying it.
NIce work Phil. Can't wait to see you flip it over again. Cheers.
Soon.
Best to be facing downward, not upwards!
You're not wrong.
Thanks Phil, great vid, that was exhausting hahahaha, just kidding mate she's coming along nicely. Seeya Rob.......Merry Christmas and a even Merrier New Year mate, take care, stay safe.
Thanks Rob. Exhausted me too.
Instead of a piece of stainless under the exhaust could you maybe weld a brass lip across the bottom of the fitting to stop the drip line down the hull
Thank you. That's woprth thinking about.
Hi Phil, wonderful to see if you’re still working on Jabiru, I was down your way near the Hawkesbury River last month absolutely picturesque place. Wonderful part of Australia. Keep up the good work. I really appreciate what you’re doing with Jabiru, Cliff from Logan City Queensland Australia 🇦🇺 I’m on the big island 🏝️
It was a pity I wasn't there when you came down. It was all prepared for the turnover, so it would have been a good time for you to visit. Maybe next time you are down, we can get together.
Great work as always Phill thanks for sharing 🦘
Thanks Kerry.
Good to see you, Phil. Who would have thought an exhaust fit was a good watch. Thanks.
Hi Martyn, I have now turned the boat back over and I started to edit that sequence. However I saw how much video had been taken of the exhaust, so I decided to keep it at that. Turn over is next one.
It's great to see a video popping up. I really enjoy this rebuild. Thanks.
Thanks Martyn
Good video, we all make mistakes, but it how you get over them !!!!
Thank you.
Hello Phill, i have been watching your work, amazing mate, keep at ot, it will be amazing when your done and worth all the effort
Thank you. Glad you're enjoying it.
Thanks turned out great
Thank you.
Rather than re-coat with more Gelcoat, some elbow work on the cured Gelcoat with wet and dry abrasives will give you the nice finish you want. If you recoat, you are going to end up with the runs and curtaining you built the mould to avoid in the first place.
The trouble with doing that is that there are a couple of dings from my efforts to remove the mold so after puttying those I will have to re-coat.
Great work Phill as always 🦘
Thank Kerry
Bonza Phil. Thanks!
Ripper.
Ultimately you got what you wanted and it’s a very nice looking drip tray. You also got to test how strong it is! Good job.
Thank you. I'm happy with it.
She has nice lines.
I agree.
Great piece of work did you use a release agent on the mold ? look forward to the Engine rebuild and top work
Yes. I did use release agent, but the uncured first coat acted like a sticky glue.
OMG the work, he could have made a one-off in 2-3 hours lol...
Not sure how it could have been done in 2-3 hours.
Thanks.
🙋 Слава Рукастым!!✊
Hi Phil, been there, done that!! All I did was leave the fibreglass/ gel coat to go off by itself over a few weeks/ months. Of course you don't have that luxury necessarily... but it's always worth remembering that it does go off all by itself eventually!
I really should have removed the first coat before continuing.
At least you made the mistakes on the parts that no one is really going to to see much less inspect.
You're right, there won't be much of it to see.
May I suggest that if you do more of this type of work. Put on some leather gloves before trying to rip excess glass off. Ask me how many stitches and how long it takes to heal.
Always handled with care.
good work
Thank you.
