I don't care much about the politics or arguments of glassing a wooden hull, all I see is another tired old boat being given a second (3rd 4th 5th whatever) chance chance to get back in the water and Im 100% behind any owner who choses to save their boat by any means they can. I have no idea why but I always thought it would dry the same colour as the matting (yeah I know 🤣🤣)
As much as I viscerally dislike the idea of splining and glassing a carvel hull, I will say that you do it right in world where so many don't and end up inadvertently destroying their boats. Great work, Phil.
@Pocketfarmer1 9 times out of 10 I think it's best to leave wooden boats the way they were designed. There's no need to spline the seams of a carvel hull unless your planning on fiberglassing it.

I looked for a person who would be willing to row out to the mooring every day to pump out a beautiful original 90 year old caulked and painted wooden boat and to my surprise not one person volunteered. I am also not willing to do the daily chore, hence the fibreglass and epoxy.
@revivingjabiru7588 I'm obviously not advocating just leaving one in a derelict condition like you describe. I'm merely saying that it's not impossible to restore a wooden boat without resorting to fiberglass, and in my mind, that's the preferable path that retains the most historical value and character. I'm also not saying that glassing a wooden boat is always the wrong thing to do, and in your case, it's gonna work out just fine. You're a professional, and you know what you're doing. And that's great. But I've seen and heard of a lot of boats that people who don't know what they're doing have done a shoddy glass job on that end up in horrible shape in very short order.
Pleasant way to start a Sunday. Have never used peel ply but can see if I had it would have saved the many hours of torture boarding that resulted in my 30 ft solid glass hull. Wish I had seen this 12 years ago. Thank you for displaying your build and I look forward to seeing her floating again. cheers , Jim

I’m impressed with your work. My boat repair experience is with a wooden boat and a fiberglass boat. Doing wood repairs was very enjoyable to me. Watching you repair the wood hull was a treat.
If it's not too late, remove the plastic handle from your roller and cut the metal shaft down so that when you replace the handle it's end passes the bend in the shaft by about an inch. Cut a grove in the handle to accommodate the bend, add a few grooves in the metal to stop any rotation of the handle when reglued back in place. This will make the use of the tool so much easier and comfortable. I spent many years using them as standard untill i did this and the difference was night and day. Keep well and stay safe.

This is probably a little too late because you’d probably already done but. Have you ever watched Dan Lee ‘s boat building channel on TH-cam. There’s a lot of excellent tips on this sort of thing. "Lumps" under peel play isn't usual. Are you using commercial peel-ply or cheap fabric from a dress shop? I found you can dramatically speed up Epoxy wetout with a warm gently stream of air from a hair-dryer. The lowering of viscosity works like a dream. Edit. Aha, 18:10 trying to put resin OVER peel ply. Nah. As you found, if you don't have it ON the glass first, its a hopeless case. You'd have to roll back the dry peel ply and add some more epoxy.
Thanks for the comments. It is peel ply from the same supplier of glass and resin. I noticed today there is an area where the peel ply has been applied over some glass. Under the peel ply there are lumps and right next to it on the same piece of glass is smooth as it should be. No extra resin was applied. I'm getting better as I go along, but peel ply is still not to my liking.

I always have two of three months early summer of solid work and I just can’t find enthusiasm for working in dribs and drabs so I tend to leave things until I can work for a block of time. I can’t wait to get back to her in a couple of weeks! Looking forward to seeing where you go next on Jabaru too… Cheers!
Hi Mike, It is epoxy and the glass is 600 gsm triaxial. It's very easy cloth to work with. I only used peel ply at the end of each day so I could easily start again the next day and not have to wait for the full cure.
Phil apologies if i missed it, but why are you glassing Jabiru? i have a 92 yr old kauri carvel planked yacht, had her 20 years a bit of caulking needed replacing on garboard plank but nowhere else all original and no issues.
It's all about not wanting a leaky boat. Jabiru has been out of the water for more than ten years, so everything has shrunk. If I did a good enough job of caulking so she didn't leak at the launching, a few weeks later she would be bursting at the seams. If you look at #19, turning her over, you will see a shot from beneath and that shows the size of some of the seam gaps. It was easier to spline the hull and glass it. If she had stayed in the water, it might have been different.

Yes. It ends up six layers over the bottom of the keel and alsop at the stem and stern. Maybe even more by the time it's finished. Nice and strong.

A lot of people seem to like the music to cover those long silences. I guess you could turn the volume down.
