Myself and my wife do what we call the rule of three or four, we buy three or four of anything food related, same with packs of seeds and anything else we can afford, the same should apply if you breed chicken or rabbits or even larger livestock, most people have many females, but only one male, if he dies, one minus one equals zero.

To my knowledge, the only tinned/canned butter is imported from Australia and extremely expensive. I have never seen it anywhere in stores. I made a lot of ghee a couple of years ago when we had a lot of sales. I mail-ordered ONE package of butter powder. Shredded cheddar, Monterey Jack, Gouda, Parmesan and other harder cheeses dehydrate and keep well if you change paper towels or absorbant cloths under themand change them several times.I have chees I dehydrated 5 years ago that is lovely. KEEP YOUR SALT IN WATER/MOISTURE-PROOF containers, even if in ziplock bags. Salt leeches the water from the air, hardens and ruins whatever it sits on...trust me. I have all of what you mentioned.

You can Wax hard cheeses and if kept in the usual cool, dry, dark spot that cheese will keep 18 months to 2+ years.

Knowledge is power. And whether there's a crisis or there are good times it always pays to know how to source or at least know what can substitute for food there could latter be a shortage of. How the ever loving hell salt could ever be rarioned is a mystery though. The sea is loaded with if. Filter and evaporate and all the salt you would personally need. Equally herbs/spices most herbs that we might need are easily grown in the uk and where knowledge comes in handy is knowing there are native plants that can substitute for a supprising number of spices we would otherwise have to import. Im by no means saying rationing or war istelf is something to be welcomed. But towards the end of ww2 the population of this country was probably the healthiest they had ever been and that was due to the forced change in dietary habbits due to rationing. Shelf sable foods that dont require refridgeration are the ideal sollution to long-term storage during a crisis. And the ability to preserve them yourself will become invaluable. I really do need to buy a food dehydrator, but even without iv, I had very good results, just drying food on a sunny windowsill. I do this more for frugality than Anything else but when supermarkets have a surplus of reduced to clear eggs a dehydrator is a perfect answer to powdering them for long term use and extending their shelf life beyond use/sell by dates that we all slavishly seem to just accept without question these days. My picky kids dont like eating bread crust. But they somehow dont notice them when theyre turned into breadcdumbs as a coating' bulking agent for mince products such as meatballs or burgers and as a sauce thickener. Breadcrumbs are my preffered thickenening method as they offer a better texture than standard cornflour. Here on the coast i have ready access to mustard plants that grow wild all along the cliff rops and the leaves make a better green than almost anything you could get from a supermarket. O ions looking a littke worse for wear? Dry and powder them as a seasoning/spice. Celery dried and powdered is exceptionally good as a seasoning. Alexanders are a very abundant coastal plant whos seeds are comparable to scezuan peppercorns. Hogweed seeds an excellent alternative and equivelentbto cardamon pods. Magniolia flower's? Ginger, not to mention the large sellection of wild alliums we have natively or introduced. Pineapple weed literally tastes and smells of pineapple. Knowledge like that is freely avalable but one i tend to guard purely as if everyone knew there would be less for those thag already do

We grow a lots of fruits and veg abd there are just the two of us oldies who don't eat as much as we used to. However, I have been through my big prep boxes and find them much depleted due to the high cost of food, so, that was our prep wasn't it. Now I am stepping up once more. I listened to a guy (I think he was in Cuba). He said that for actual survival, protein and grains are the things that will make us survive, al9ng with water of course. It got my mind slightly switched as I am big on veg. Now I am focusing on pulses, rice, millet, amaranth, quinoa, corn cous cous and we have great success with potatoes in buckets and usually green beans. Those along with the massive quantity of toms I can preserve and a wide variety of herbs...both to add extra vits and flavour should get the basics sorted. Ana, did you try making chocolate with cacao and sunflower lecithin? Look it up. Now....chocolate🤣

I have no problem in believing that food rationing is waiting for us down the line. Like yourself, I store lots of sugar for my wine making and baking. I would miss cheese and I have thought about buying some food grade wax to store the cheese in, or buy some already in wax. When I started prepping, I bought the cheapest items but now I am replacing them with higher quality stock while it is available.

I experimented with waxing cheese and had very little success after some time. I dehydrate cheese,(harder cheeses are better: cheddars, Monterey Jack, Gouda, Parmesan, etc.) If you put paper towels or absorbant cloths under it to take away the oils and change it several times, I have been very successful with that.

The major holes in UK preps are antibiotics, serious pain medication for acute medical situations and self-defence. Our Dear Leaders treat us like children. Short lifespan items like Epi-Pens worry me too. They don't exactly stockpile, but we keep our old ones just in case - a doctor said you can use them beyond the date as long as they're still clear or just turning - he said he'd use them anyway for lack of anything else. I dread to think how people who need diabetes or other life-saving drugs will manage if the SHTF. Things like Magnesium and dissolvable aspirin for heart issues and stroke (you'd have to research that). Add anti-histamines to the stockpile (tablets - drowsy and non-drowsy, creams, etc), creams like Germolene, colloidal silver, castor oil, Vaseline (useful for so many things), and Lugol's Iodine. A few bottles of high-strength, non-flavoured Vodka will keep forever and can be used for wounds, sedation or barter (that's not recommended if you can't keep alcohol in the house without drinking it ...). I don't buy much in the way of treatments for colds and flu, but I do swear by Olbas Oil - a few drops on a tissue beside your head will help you breathe and get to sleep. I wouldn't bother with cheap vitamins. Do add good quality (few to no additives) Vit D3 with K2, Vit C, multivits, etc and anything that you specifically use. I keep several bottles of Tea Tree oil and a lot of Jungle Formula and Icaridin bug repellant - better to prevent than treat. Two medical preps most people forget is a way to filter water to prevent health issues and, for medical uses, a way to boil and cool it. Soap. Sterile gloves. The list goes on and on. There are good books on SHTF medical protocols and on alternative herbal remedies - aloe vera plants in the house are brilliant for small burns and sunburn - it really works. You could go all out and buy a defibrillator, but the chances of bringing someone back from complete collapse is very slight regardless of the hype surrounding them. Do a First Aid course - you can usually do them free of charge via organisations like Scouts and Guides. There's an American Prepper Nurse who does online classes for a fee, but a lot of the things available to them in the US won't be available here. If things get really bad, having some two-way radios tucked away in a Faraday cage might be a way to find someone with more knowledge.

Richard hasn't watched the Walking Dead. I know it's just TV but it's absolutely what will happen. There will always be groups who want to take over and rule the rest, whether through fear or violence. This utopia that Richard thinks will happen will only happen to a degree, and then once a lovely little utopia has been established, a group will come in and take over, take the food they're growing, take the moonshine, everything. You can integrate into community, whilst still having a stash hidden away.

Where I live a lot of gardeners are buying heirloom open pollinating seeds. Finding the grocery store seeds don't grow much vegetables but mostly leaves. Lots of problems with treated seed at this time.

Now I wish I'd purchased a dehydrator! Too many courgettes have gone to waste although mass cucumbers have been made into the Riverford organics pickle recipe and so far 16kg tomatoes frozen. Thanks Ana, great vid!

Use your oven to dehydrate. Put on the lowest setting, keep the oven door open a tiny bit, check every hour or two, maybe turn some, move them around on the trays. Stuff dehydrates lovely. I've done tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, peppers, sweetcorrn, mushrooms, onions, rice, fruit, eggs, milk, all sorts. Give it a go! x

Hello Ana, have you tried apple and courgettes pie! I first cringed at the thought but it’s brilliant. If anyone is a diabetic or on a low carb diet by using a cooking apple and courgettes it lowers the carbohydrates significantly.

I am just waiting for my final batch of watermelon to finish then will do a 12 tray load of courgettes to make into a powder. I am also going to experiment with dipping cucumber slices in vinegar and dehydrating into crisps 🤞

I have been dehydrating watermelon all weekend, I now know the trick to having a very sweet crisp at the end. I never knew the rugby ball shape are the males and the rounder football shape are the females…the round are so much sweeter. When I peel the skin I try to not get the paler pith and then dehydrate the green skins and add them to my green powder mix.

@@AnasFoodLifestyle yes, i guess that is a possibility. however, we do not have to allow any so called person of authority onto our property. don't answer the door of just refuse entry. you could even put a sign on your door something like: 'please note, no entry to this property except by prior invitation'. also consider this, no man or woman has any authority over another man or woman's property, that includes your body, which is the property in which you live. authority is an illusion and only exists inside the fictional world of hierarchical TITLES. thus, no man or woman (acting as a government agent for example) can tell you what you may do with chickens that are your property, it is non of their business
