My Texas Yard
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 20 มิ.ย. 2018
Welcome to My Texas Yard. Located in Liberty Hill Texas! (20 min north of Austin). If you want to see what a "back yard garden" can be, come check out my videos.
This is not your typical "tips and tricks" channel for gardening. I'm not going to tell you how to do something. I'm simply here to show you what works and what does not work for me. And if you find this entertaining or helpful, be sure to subscribe!
I roughly follow the Back To Eden garden method of no till and deep mulch.
I started this garden because I wanted clean and healthy food for my family. I never use fertilizer or pesticides. My garden is better than "organic".

Are snails good for the garden?
We reached our breaking point with snails. Time to remove them.

Texas garden problems
มุมมอง 48011 หลายเดือนก่อน
A quick cold snap is about to hit TX. I always have one last "summer" harvest before the freezing temps turn all my peppers and summer produce to much. But, if you have done the work and put seeds in the ground over the last couple months, you will have new crops for winter filling up the garden.

Here is how I plant garlic. Anytime, Oct - Nov is a good time to plant in central TX.

Don’t throw that woody okra away. Here is what to do with it.
มุมมอง 8Kปีที่แล้ว
Tired of throwing half your okra away because it's too woody to eat? Try this with your large okra and enjoy.
The BIGGEST QUESTION every gardener should ask themselves
มุมมอง 878ปีที่แล้ว
Have you ever stepped back from your garden and asked yourself, "why am I doing this"? With all of the "information" being blasted at us from all sides, it's important to step back from time to time and talk about the basics.

Growing Peppers and tomatoes in December!

Growing Peppers and tomatoes in December!
I added black cow to my raised beds to level them off. Turned two of them. Was too lazy to turn the long one. Planted all kinds of fall seeds. The only ones coming up are Swiss chard. Have a few young squash that are struggling in it. I probably should have added some lime with it? Idk. It’ll be ready for spring I guess.
Is that Texas sage? If it is, that's not really sage.
It's because the seeds inside the melon are the next generation. That's what Google said anyway. I have a King of the West honeydew melon that was so good. How did you cultivate the seeds? I have to wait till the danger of Frost is gone in the spring but it is just getting into the fall right now. How should I store the seeds as well? Airtight container in a dark dry place?
I live in Las Vegas, Nv. And I don’t think, they would grow out here. Especially with no shade. I’m having to grow in aero garden. I would love to grow some outside, but worry by May, they’ll get too much sun. Do you think it’s possible
Thanks for sharing and I would’ve enjoyed seeing more footage as you were growing and harvesting jòurney. I look forward to the coming season.

It ca not take too much sun. One died on me
When is the best time to plant garlic in tx ?
When harvesting, try “snapping” them more than pulling on them, you will disturb and harm the crowns below ground less. Otherwise, beautiful garden harvest!
The dogs were the secret!! Great job, I need to try this :-) I already have some volunteer cantaloupes in my garden but not any honey dews.
By the way, I'd recommend saving that seed from the melons you enjoyed and replant.
I live in DFW and I always do sweet potatoes in raised beds. They love heat and produce well as long as you give them some water. In fact heat seems to make them grow faster. I am trying black-eyed peas this year and they are going well so far and was told they are drought resistant. The tomatoes and peppers are going well. In fact the tomatoes produce well in the heat if you water them. This is my year to try Malabar Spinach so yet to see the results.
thanx
Black-eyed peas, or Southern peas, do well even with some neglect and are highly nutritious. Most people just eat them out of a can, but they are delectable when fresh and cooked with a bit of bacon or butter.
I didnt get any squash this year all of them only had male flowers.
Austin area
I couldn’t see the sprinklers. Such a good idea. What kind of sprinklers? Where are they?
Tobacco
Looks like a fun way to control snails :) LoL at the final solution!
Will this work on harvester ants?
I would think it would work on any ant.
🙏🏻 Thank you
I read that it is suppose to help reduce the effects of seasonal allergies
is it possible to make a horseradish sauce with it? I bought these seeds and might grow them lol.
I would think it would be. But I have not seen anyone do it.
Im so glad for the reminder of this. Also, thank you for saying I dont need the dawn. I tried the other concochions on mounds outside of my garden and they didn't always work but smaller mounds it did. Also, sometimes the ants just moved. This did work when I used it in past years. Yay
I just read that snails don’t like oak leafmold.
What kind of dog is that?
Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for sharing!
Great ideas, I’ve tried them, both work but orange oil is simplest and efficient, what is best to use as emulsifier? I’ve used dawn dish washing soap not sure if it’s best.
There is no need for an emulsifier. For some reason, that myth got spread and now everyone thinks dish soap is a good idea. It’s just poison.
Can you post a link to the oil or where to get it and the name, please?
Link is now in description.
Thanks for sharing. Wanted to see that potato you planted!
I used and OrangeOil + Mollasses mixture to treat my ants (5 gallon, 10oz and 5oz). One large ant pile swallowed 3 gallons no problem. Three days later I am seeing new tiny mounds pop up with some activity. Maybe I didn't get all the queens.
What is the molasses used for?
@@MyTexasYard I believe the mollassas keeps ants from returning.
@@richardkalmwater5996 a second treatment the next day or two would probably be a good idea if it’s a really large mound.
So if I buy one from the store does that mean it's ready to cook? Because they're pretty hard? Are they supposed to be super hard? Thanks for putting out the good stuff buddy
Yes. Butternut are pretty hard until you cook them. They should be hard even when ready to eat. I have never gotten a bad one from the store. Winter squash have hard and thick skin. This is what helps them stay fresh for so long.
I did the boiling water. I boiled and dumped a few kettle full on a hive. Next, morning the ground around the nest was full of dead red ants. They carried out all the dead ants from the next and took them outside. Then, it was business as usual within the nest. Didn't really work.
Thank you. I live in Houston, TX. This was great advice as to where I need to put my new strawberry bed location at. And you were correct, “full sun” in Texas can be brutal/fatal to plants in the summer months, even if the instructions say that.
Hi.. I was searching for the C. TX gardeners TH-cam to get some gardening information. I loved your gardening philosophy, including your opinion about the house pets: totally agreed on it! I learned some good advice from you here. Thank you!!
I put little cups of beer around my sensitive starts and that helps with slugs at least
I just saw a slug tonight. First one I’ve seen. I may try the beer.
I have that same little compost bin. Have you ever tried slug bait? It works pretty well.
I have not. I try to garden without using products I have to buy. So far, the only thing I have bought, product wise, is orange oil for killing fire ants.
They decimated my bean plants last year.
They seem to love young bean plants.
Good trick but you fail by using one rag only and leaving the other hand bare and no steam coming out of the pot. But the fall look real.
Love yr video. Very practical
Great idea with those concrete blocks 👍
call you johnny
Wow i like your setup. Very thoughtful and simple.
Love the video, please understand how to modulate your microphone , cause it peaks really bad and its fixable :)
I’ll look into it, thanks.
I’ve been using orange oil in my garden beds for several years and have never seen damage to any of my plants. I add a good squirt of Dawn to the mixture.
i have a small floridaking peach tree in a container on my driveway. it does great and the fruit is amazing. im in kingwood near humble. maybe you got a bad tree?
It could be. I’m going to give it another year with lots of compost and see what happens.
@@MyTexasYard good luck! nothing like a ripe peach to take the mind of the sweltering weather. mine just finished blooming last week and i can see about 25 peaches. this is second year, last year had 14. i dont expect a lot since its in a pot on blazing hot concrete, hoping to create a 'potted orchard' later this year in the backyard where it will be off the concrete and get a bit more shade. i moved to Texas a few years back with no idea how to grow food, wish i had, wouldve definitely changed my priorities for house hunting. I love finding channels like yours to help me w my growing endeavors!! Thanks for being on youtube!
What a great idea with the blocks and board flower bed
Where did you get concrete blocks cut like that to fit the wood for the garden border?
Lowes has them.
I just bought toothache seeds. Have you tried it? Does it really work? I'm in Ga and okra can definitely take the heat, I save the seeds. 😀
Train your dog. Don't be lazy.
I agree with you about dogs! Don’t listen to the emotionally crippled haters.
