The use of Pūrerehua (the whirring wind instrument you hear) in the violent scenes is so eerie and unsettling. Using a Māori instrument to signpost these acts of violence says a lot about the blood that's on our hands as well, by ignoring what's been going on in our own backyards.

In the final fight, Tommy didn’t tap till he heard his brother say “I love you”. He didn’t need to hear “I’m sorry” or anything else. He needed to hear his brother say I love you and feel it.

You're not a cry baby. Just about every guy I know who watched this film cried - seriously.

Chopper is another good one with some parallels

I almost want to suggest _I, Daniel Blake_ but considering how this film affected you, I'm not so sure.

Original skinheads weren't about racism, there are still skinheads who stick to the original beliefs who are called SHARPS (Skin Heads Against Racial Prejudice) because the original skinhead culture was about white working class people mixing with immigrants from the former colonies and adopting their culture. The working class were a melting pot and we still are. Us invading those countries was us flaunitng it like a banner. We flaunted it to the countries we colonised. BTW, while the actor who played Shaun was young, the actress who played Smell was _fifteen_ at the time. As a man, the scene between Combo and Lol is really heartbreaking, that what he thought was a moment of love was rape. He never wanted that, he never wanted to do that and the fact that he did broke his heart. This film is a show of how radicalisation can twist hurt people into hurting others, and the realisation doesn't come until it's far too late and you've hurt others and you finally realise what you've been radicalised into. Another factor about the actor who played Shaun, was this film was made very shortly after his real life mother had passed away. The film was dedicated to her memory.

Im from Australia and i was just casually cleaning all the receipts and random stuff that accumulated in my wallet over the past year. Pulled out a one dollar coin that was extra shiny so i flipped it to see what year it was minted and was honestly shocked to see a king on it. I audibly said wtf! My housemate heard me and was like what? I proceeded to show him the coin and he called out to the other bro to come have a ghanda. Since we are all 90s kids it was a shock to not see the queen on the back of our coins. If that's not a sign of changing times than i don't know what is.

For context the chat they have about Quentin is THE funniest thing I have ever heard, The boy he references Quentin was a late Australian actor/director (mad max Fury road) who touched the hearts of every Australian when he was interviewed on our 60 mins(I think or similar) as a little boy living with a brittle bone condition. He did indeed make the interviewer cry. Oh and "Dimmies" are sort of like an asian wonton with a pork mince filling deep fried and sold in fast food fish n chip shops in Australia.

All of Tom’s performances are great! I want to recommend that you watch The Drop next, its something completely different from him and it really demonstrates his acting range

Matt Noble's 'Quentin' dialogue in the car was almost entirely improvised from what I read. So many real naturals in the cast. Australian drama often casts from a shallow group of regulars so it's refreshing to see other lesser known but talented actors getting a chance.Keep at it lady. It gets so much better.

It's a valid point about England invading pretty much everyone at one time or another, but does that necessarily mean they are obliged to take in an infinite number of migrants? I'm Irish, we've been invaded by England, Ireland has never invaded anywhere (unless you count Boston) and we also are apparently obliged to take in an infinite number of migrants (like every western country), but I'm willing to bet that you would be just as opposed to me saying that as you are to the English, so the "but they were bad" argument is really a load of bull. Despite what they did in the past, does it mean that the English today should be punished for it? You might be more malevolent than you think , but you hide it behind empathy like all liberals. Believe me, this empathy is doing and will do more harm than good in the long run. Not just for us, but them as well and pretty much everyone. Usually the go-to argument for anti-immigrant sentiment from an Irishman is "but you guys immigrated as well to the US and still do to Australia, so you should know better." Again, it doesn't matter. The US was predominately white when the Irish moved there during the famine and later on, so it's not difficult to see why we assimilated more easily. They were essentially the same apart from the accents, different religions and customs.
