That scene made me sad as it made me think of my father. I saw photos of him before he went to Vietnam and he was young and smiling and happy, but growing up he was not that person. I always wish I knew him back then.
Re. the boxing gym story. I don't think the guy who was paid $30k was ever going to do the job, so Ray was getting his friend's money back for him and teaching the supposed "hitman" a lesson. Father and son both falling for cons!

@@chrissiereacts I think Ray was just taking out the chance of the other people stuffing up the job and the son ends up going to prison. Ray was just making sure it was done right.
First I just want to say you look radiant as ever. So as far as forgiving an abuser, forgiving someone is not about what they do or don’t deserve. It’s not about what you do or don’t owe them. The forgiveness is for the abused to resolve their trauma. What Ray is struggling with is being caught “in between” wanting to be a good person but not believing he deserves anything good because of the bad shit he does He does what he does and is blocked from changing because his trauma causes his anger. Forgiving his father can relieve at least some of that and open the way for Ray to feel like he deserves good things and become a better person and have healthy relationships. He desperately need to get to where he can be comfortable being vulnerable. The only way to do that is to release that anger at the source, not channel it into crime, even if that crime is in the spirit of doing good. He would never find peace without forgiving his father and resolving his trauma. He’s not giving his father a second chance because his father will be dead soon anyway. Most people don’t even get an acknowledgment let alone an apology. So i think it’s a mistake to dismiss it as the abuser looking for forgiveness. I think his father knows who Ray is and wants to help release him from the “in between” because he knows Ray can’t do it himself.
I never met my real father, So this hit hard for me, An apology won't change the past, But you can clearly see how much he really needed to hear that, He also served himself so I'm sure Ray understands how much it can effect someone, It was just a little closure If anything & probably being able to relate a bit, That generation never spoke about what they did, They usually just self medicated.
Ray knew the “hitman” was a fake and ripping his mate off. It’s why he said he “hadn’t given his guy the money yet” then that he’d “spent” it. Just another conman 😊
I totally get where you are coming from. I was in my late teens before I learnt that other people lied about things. I couldn't comprehend why they would lie about "I did such and such" instead of just doing it. I still don't understand why, but since then I have learnt to not accept people at face value.
I love watching your reactions to this series. You add so much to it, and your honest emotional reactions are wonderful and touch me. Thank you for sharing. ❤
Its not become more jaded, its become a sceptic, sceptics accept that the information we have, even the terms we use to describe it, is all very little, in the grand schemes of things. So we are always open to have that information updated, it is not set in stone. No need to become more jaded, thats a bit tiring. Man the acting in this show absolutely slaps, you can tell that everyone involved had a very good eye for casting and preforming. I wonder if Ray felt his old man's speech so hard because it felt so similar to his life.
Great reaction as always to a gem of a show. Having seen some incredibly sketchy people in my younger days you start to spot people who are full of lies. Its how Ray always knows they are lying. He can see it from mile away.
No person owes any other person anything. But knowing that some people dive down corridors that you can't understand or experience provides a perspective for understanding, and that's all the perpetrator of harmful acts can expect.
I'm with you Chrissie. You don't owe an abuser anything. If it helps you to forgive them you can, but if you don't think that will help you you should never feel such an obligation and that person has already taken too much from you.😊
Yeah, it's almost a cult that you should forgive people who have done terrible things to you. Well I don't buy it. I think letting go of the anger and shame at being a victim is a good thing, of course. But don't ever tell me that I have to forgive someone. That's up to me. And me alone. If I don't want to, then that's how it is.
Hi Chriisse, just found your channel the other day and really enjoy seeing you watch and comment on things I've already seen. That shoes off thing. I have the same rule in my house, living in New Zealand. It depends on the homeowner, really. Enjoying your reactions to Mr Inbetween. A very under rated show. Thanks for your reactions.
I’m an older kiwi and shoes off households have always been a rare experience for me. I recognise it more now being older as so many visitors ask me if they should take their shoes off, but I prefer they don’t. I guess it is just what we each are used to and find normal 😅
My dad wasn't a great bloke, and I carried a lot of hatred with me for a long time. I know that if he ever said that he was sorry, i would at least tell him i forgive him. But he never will. I don't have the energy to hate anymore, I'm nearly 40 now. But if he sat me down and said he was sorry, that it was his drinking or whatever, explained his behavior to me it would give me a little bit of peace. But I agree with you, you don't owe abusers forgiveness if they ask for it, don't think I'll get that chance though.
I'm sorry to hear you went through that. It can be so emotionally draining to carry that shit around. For sure, apologies are always nice to hear, but sounds like you were able to move on in spite of him 🤍
If you take your shoes off before entering a house - and leave them outside - then you gotta check them for spiders when you go to put them on again. Way too much trouble and besides they hide in the toe areas. When visiting other peoples' houses I might ask about shoes but it's not a common thing in my experience.
Really enjoying your reactions to this wonderful series! One thing, this series has some amazing song choices particularly closing out the episodes which you might stay with for a few moments. Episode 5 closing out with Into My Arms by Nick Cave is a great example of this. Anyway, I've really enjoyed watching this again with you!
As Brucey said "Holding a grudge against someone is like drinking poison and expecting them to get sick." I think Ray realizes that when he listens to his father, it was affecting him negatively far more than it helping him.
It's a recurring theme in this show. Ray's mate who jumps off the cliff was messed up by what he had scene. Even the bikie prez was haunted by the guy he killed. Ray suppresses it all, for the most part.
Great underrated show. Not many people know about this show so it's cool to watch a reactor watching it. I also like his parenting style. A good father, and assassin. My father used to call me a dumb horse any time I did anything wrong like spilling milk. Used to take pleasure in making me tear up, nervous and afraid. I think it made him feel big, when the world beat him down. Unfortunately now I don't show emotions even when people die or are happy. People think Im a tough guy. Women like it, so thats good lol.

End of episode 5, Nick Cave "Into my arms" was a really good choice. Aside from one song, that I think was the kooks or some terrible faux-indie band, the whole show's had a really solid soundtrack. Moving on... allegedly you don't forgive someone else for them, you forgive them for you. Often easier said than done. I really like Ray's story, it was kinda obvious from the name of the series and the very first episode that it was going to be the kind of arc that it is, but it's no less satisfying with that tv-literate observation (well done me 🤣), it's certainly plausible within the world of the show. The characters are excellent, like The Wire there's a lot of non-plot related character interaction - a lesser show wouldn't bother with Gary's "hobby" or the dumb "best Bond" conversation - but it gives so much to the show, really makes you believe and care for the characters. Nice detail when you spotted the vajankle on the sofa, did you notice Ray hide it under the cushion when Brittany shows up? Like hell I'd have touched that 🤣
I think if you wholeheartedly agree with it there is a problem so of course you don't. I think it's ok to have a dark sided appreciation. We all have our dark thoughts but part of being good people is they remain thoughts not actions or also importantly not our apathetic opinion. I feel a satisfaction of Ray going after the guys that bilked his friends but I also wouldn't do it myself and see that as the struggle Ray has with just being a regular Joe.
It's also worth saying that abuse is a different thing for different people. There is no right or wrong, no correct definition. If you feel you have been abused, please feel validated in that feeling, and address it in whatever way is best for you!
The 30k guy wasn't goin to the the job and if he did there is a good chance that goose will get done and bring the other guy down with him.Ray knew , so he was looking after his mate .
Fun fact chopper once said. His never shot anyone while he was drunk it's when his sober knocking at your door at 4 in the morning thats when you need to worry.
I think 'lying' is a very serous wrongdoing. I don't expect anyone to be lying to me. I am Australian living in Australia, I just don't have many memories of anyone ever lying to me or me to them. Perhaps I'm naive too. Not sure.
10:55 sasr 1966... my grandpa died 3 years ago due to the chemicals the bloody yanks used. The bugger did multiple tours and refused to leave his mates. I will forever have resentmet in my heart for the yanks that drew us into a conflict that wasn't our business. I have not only lost a best friend but my grandfather has lost his first born grandson. What did he get when he came back nothing but fucking hate. he spent the rest of his life as a advocate for Australian Vietnam vets and also on his motorcycle under the Vietnam veterans patch and as a member. Helped alot of hermits that went out bush after the war return to society after becoming recluses ect. Never underestimate what they had to do or go through. To alot of the yanks we were no more than a send in first. Our sasr regiment was feared and for a good bloody reason by the nva and vc. Let's not forget the worst part. My grandmother illegally changed my mum and my aunties last names, and moved them, first born and second born so he had no contact with them until he was over 60. PTSD was a huge thing and, no I can't speak about what happened to him. Sasr... The grandmother remarried a guy who sexually abused both my mother and auntie. She stayed with him till she died of bowel cancer at 56. I'm sorry for the spill but it cuts me deep and I've never spoken about it irl.
I grew up with father like Rays . My dad used keep a loaded shotgun under his bed. I thought that was normal and never realised until I grew up that was not normal.
Chrissie, your comments are gold, and certainly worth more than $0.02. Forgiveness is a difficult subject to tackle. They say the personality you have by the time you reach 6 years of age, the damage is done and it determines on the whole the kind of person you will be for the rest of your life. The changes that occur in a child's mind when they are young are profound and long lasting. Abuse is one thing but for me, when I think about the kind of person I could have been if I hadn't been abused as a child, it hurts even more.
Can't wait to see your reaction to the final scene of the series! Mr. Inbetween is such a brilliant show. It's hard to compare it to The Wire, but both are in my All Time Top 5.
The interesting thing about the school reunion when he's talking to his old teacher about picking his shoes up while he walks and going back to the episode where he's telling his girlfriend about how he wanted to end it all sat on the swings is they were actually real events in Scott Ryan's (Ray) life. He revealed this in an interview he had. He wrote these events into the show. (Edited for grammar mistakes)
I got to thinking the way pregnant Ally got the "hurry up" horn toot from, presumably, the new partner, there could be a thread getting pulled. ie. New partner is disrespectful and maybe abusive. Ray to the rescue.
With the shoe thing, it depends on the house, the owner, colour of the carpet and the size of the family dog. Rule of thumb is if the owner leaves the boots on, so can you. Rich people will always ask if they want you too. Footwear is important, what with all the venomous snakes, spiders and bindies about.
I never got an apology from my father, who is gone now. Made my peace with it, though I am not sure how I would have reacted had he said sorry. We see our parents as Gods and resent them for being human.
if someone says it's a shoes off house then everyone wouldn't blink and respect that. or if they started taking their shoes off at the door and there were shoes outside, you'd do the same without being told. but if the owner of the house walks in and doesn't take their shoes off, you'd also do the same, unless you had muddy boots.
It's probably already been said, but forgiveness is not for the forgiven, it's for the forgiver. And forgiveness never excuses someone's actions. At least, it shouldn't. It's about acceptance for yourself and not carrying grudge. It isn't about mending broken relationships, it's about healing yourself as best you can. Carrying hate and a grudge is just a burden no one needs to bear. It's a poison you choose to consume. It's not necessary. Forgiveness does not absolve anyone, but it allows a person to move forward in a healthier emotional place.
Moving on and feeling indifference towards your abuser is very far from carrying hate and burden. A person can do all those things without forgiving the heinous crimes they were subjected to. Everyone is different, and while it's great that you relate more to one side of the coin, I say this with kindness: I encourage you not to believe that every person deals with trauma in the same way. Life is not black and white. Life is more nuanced than Hate/Forgive
"I dont agree with this. The guy already hired him." You realise you said this right after the guy pretended he wasted it and never gave it to the 3rd guy who was actually supposed to do it? He was a fraudulent middleman most likely about to spend it on drugs by his appearance.
He roughed him up because a friend wouldn't scam a friend out of 30K, especially not in the wake of his father's funeral, eh? People like Ray are not found on every corner and he knew the guy probably did NOT know a friend who could do what Ray does. Similarly, Ray knew the con man was still running a con, after seeing his 4K bottle of wine. Then he killed him because the man caused the death of someone he liked, a FRIEND. Ray empathizes with those unable to cope with the guys Ray deals with regularly. Sometimes, he can even recognize their pain.
gorgeous as usual Chrissie, i agree about the power of to forgive or not, i have a brain twister for you though,,, what if the person you cant forgive is yourself?.. i live with a hatred of myself for something my younger self didn't have any real control over yet no matter how i try to justify or forgive, live and let live, it all ends up with me punishing myself one way or another.
The things the old man said. There's all kinds of abuse. And all lengths of time it endures. The disdain you feel towards him is justified. But know this, when he looks in the mirror, he sees himself as a far worse person than everybody else sees him as. Just sayin...
yes we wear shoes inside, it's actually weird going through the new developments where it's just immigrants and they have these shoe shelf thigns outside their front door with like 10 pairs of shoes in them
Imo, the sugar/sweetness undoes the point of scotch in the first place. When I was young & clubbing it was scotch or bourbon with coke/cola. Now it’s scotch and dry or neat.
You have to forgive or you hold on to all that hate. I'm in the same situation as Ray. My Mums in 24/7 care and my childhood shaped the person who I'm today. I tell her I love her no matter what.
We're never going to agree on anything, are we? That's alright. It was a ripoff and if you think that the people selling that steaming pile are somehow innocent, I mean, Dear Lord! They take people's retirement and complain about it from their air conditioned condo while eating caviar and contemplating their next boat purchase. People sweated their lives away for that money thinking that the 30k would be enough when inflation rocked their retirement out of the water. Just because they're gullible doesn't mean that these pariah should prey on them any more than karma manifested by Ray shouldn't come by and remind people to stop f^(king with others! Why are they assholes? Because they haven't met Ray yet.
@@chrissiereacts If you wanna spot a scam, look at who they are targeting. The guy didn't target his friend, he targeted his friend's Dad. Older people are very trusting, they're usually desperate because they're finding out that their plans for retirement are inadequate. They are gullible because they haven't been exposed to all the predatory tactics out there. If he weren't guilt riddled why did he lie about it. He must have known that the Dad offed himself and the family business had to be shut down. You're a business woman, but I doubt that you're scamming people. I would feel bad for the guy if he were selling a quality product worthy of the name. That's not the case here.
The guy Ray went to visit first was the son's friend, who he hired for the hit on the con artist. That guy had nothing to do with the tea scam or the dad. The rich wine drinking guy is who scammed the dad.
The son paid him 30K to go kill the rich dude. So when Ray, a stranger, shows up at his door telling him the job is cancelled, the Irish guy is questioning why (the son) didn't tell him himself, and asks what Ray has to do with any of it and also who even *is* Ray. He's not then just going to hand over 30k to this rando at his door. Two seconds later Ray kicks him through the wall. I'm not saying that he was a good guy - but I don't think he was scamming anyone. He got paid to do a job (just like Ray in the past) and before he knows it he's getting the shit kicked out of him for not immediately trusting this stranger at his door and handing him over 30k.
Scott Ryan (Ray) is such an incredible actor. Those micro expressions after “I wish you had known me before I went to war” are so genuine.
💯

It's cool seeing what you laugh at. I always wonder if people elsewhere find the same things funy as Australians do
I might be wrong but i always assumed it was physical abuse not sexual. Like he used to raise his hands to Ray
The whole point from Ray's brother about forgiving someone else wasn't for the forgived person's benefit, it's for your own benefit.
For some. People are different. Not everyone needs to forgive in order to heal. And that's okay.
@@chrissiereacts no one has to do anything. The point is if someone does forgive it isn't for the forgived person's benefit.
Thankyou for bringing up forgiveness they way you said it was something I needed to hear
I think 'lying' is a very serous wrongdoing. I don't expect anyone to be lying to me. I am Australian living in Australia, I just don't have many memories of anyone ever lying to me or me to them. Perhaps I'm naive too. Not sure.
'Breaking the cycle' is the greatest achievement of my life lady
Bai Lin Tea was a big scam for weight loss here in Australia. Run by Peter Foster, the cops caught him for it.
Thanks for sharing mate
I grew up with father like Rays . My dad used keep a loaded shotgun under his bed. I thought that was normal and never realised until I grew up that was not normal.
Your words really hit home(abuser) my dad never said he was sorry!! Anyways I’m really enjoying your show!!😎😎
🫶
I'm really sorry you had to experience that 🤍 and glad you're enjoying it! It's my favourite discovery this year :)
🤍
I feel for you Chrissie,I can see that on the subject,of abuse ,it clearly, strikes ,a chord in you.I hope you are ok 👍
I really, really enjoy your reactions to this series. Thank you!
Thank you!
I love the scene between Ray and his dad - they carry the same scars as soldiers
For what's it's worth, I think the son of the Boxing Gym owner got totally scammed by his friend. He didn't know anyone who would do the job.
EVERYBODY LIES!
- Dr Gregory House
Have to remember Ray is a criminal, he has a code. The tea guy messed with his code. Why would Ray give two hoots about him.
I wasn't referring to the tea guy.
I got to thinking the way pregnant Ally got the "hurry up" horn toot from, presumably, the new partner, there could be a thread getting pulled. ie. New partner is disrespectful and maybe abusive. Ray to the rescue.
Do Aussies keep their shoes on in the house? It depends on the family, Chrissie. Mine don’t. Thank you for doing these reaction videos. Great stuff!
Shoes off is the norm, usually inside, gumboots outside.
You see Ray smile, you're fucked 😂😂😂😂
Run.
Totally agree, some crimes are not to be forgiven...
I never got an apology from my father, who is gone now. Made my peace with it, though I am not sure how I would have reacted had he said sorry.
We see our parents as Gods and resent them for being human.
War changes people, they never come back the same
if someone says it's a shoes off house then everyone wouldn't blink and respect that. or if they started taking their shoes off at the door and there were shoes outside, you'd do the same without being told. but if the owner of the house walks in and doesn't take their shoes off, you'd also do the same, unless you had muddy boots.
Great reaction as always. I love this show!
This scene is so,real, sad, and confronting, for Ray,and his father.......although,an apology, doesn't change the outcome for what has happened.
100% so well said Chrissie ❤
best therapy session ever thanks chris great reaction vid
Yeah that dude was never gonna do the hit and ray knew
You are packing some heat 🙌
I find it amusing that you think there is honour amongst serial killers - Ray had no issues with cutting someone’s else’s lunch .
Ray would be much more of a disciplinarian if he had a son. But dads are always big softies with their daughters. It's a much different relationship.
The whole scene with the drug dealer was cut but I’m sure we can imaging Ray didn’t just have a stern conversation… 😂
You might be a random stranger but you have hit it out of Park ❤
He roughed him up because a friend wouldn't scam a friend out of 30K, especially not in the wake of his father's funeral, eh? People like Ray are not found on every corner and he knew the guy probably did NOT know a friend who could do what Ray does. Similarly, Ray knew the con man was still running a con, after seeing his 4K bottle of wine. Then he killed him because the man caused the death of someone he liked, a FRIEND. Ray empathizes with those unable to cope with the guys Ray deals with regularly. Sometimes, he can even recognize their pain.
Those pink bathtubs are so cool.
4:30 Yeah, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I don't see criminal being an viable career path for you.
Lol this is... bad news?
gorgeous as usual Chrissie, i agree about the power of to forgive or not, i have a brain twister for you though,,,
what if the person you cant forgive is yourself?.. i live with a hatred of myself for something my younger self didn't have any real control over yet no matter how i try to justify or forgive, live and let live, it all ends up with me punishing myself one way or another.
The things the old man said. There's all kinds of abuse. And all lengths of time it endures. The disdain you feel towards him is justified. But know this, when he looks in the mirror, he sees himself as a far worse person than everybody else sees him as. Just sayin...
"Hurt people hurt people"...
yes we wear shoes inside, it's actually weird going through the new developments where it's just immigrants and they have these shoe shelf thigns outside their front door with like 10 pairs of shoes in them
High school reunions are never a good idea.
7:31 My girlfriend and I don't. But then I don't wear anything in the house, with the exception of winter, when I'll rock a fluffy robe. 😋
That's what I've learned to do now. With the kids. Life's too short.
At times unforgiveness is just.
What else do you put scotch with seriously i cant think of anything to add but coke mabey lemonaide but i dont reckon
Imo, the sugar/sweetness undoes the point of scotch in the first place. When I was young & clubbing it was scotch or bourbon with coke/cola. Now it’s scotch and dry or neat.
@graemefeeney2256 yea fair point i was just saying if your going mix it surely it's with coke
@@JacobBarlow-j1u you’re not wrong, most people do, especially in Oz. Try one with Dry, no chance of heartburn that you can get from coke/cola.
@@graemefeeney2256it's not Oz there's no witches and wizards hear mate
Umm, scotch and coke - about the most popular mixer in Aus.
I could be wrong, but I don't think it's that common here... But Rye and coke / ginger is very popular, which is pretty similar
As long as nobody mixes a single malt scotch with a coke - that's worthy of a visit from Ray Shoesmith - Ray who? 😂
That would be Bundy and Coke.
@@nnoddy8161 Queensalander amirite?
alll i can say murder is a cut throat buisness
Hah! 😆
You have to forgive or you hold on to all that hate. I'm in the same situation as Ray. My Mums in 24/7 care and my childhood shaped the person who I'm today. I tell her I love her no matter what.
I dare you to go to a women's shelter who have been 🍇 and tell them they have to forgive.
Clown.
Dad caught me drinking scotch and coke when I was Brittany's age. Let us say he wasn't happy. Thanks for your great reactions.
Damn! Refined palette at such a young age! Meanwhile I stealing the world's cheapest lager from the beer fridge 😅
I think the people selling the tea are innocent? I said that? 🤔
@@chrissiereacts Who's 30k was he lying about?
