All new J40 sporty, Have they gone a step to far?
I almost didn't upload this one? The brand new J40 was a sports cruiser we were all waiting for but I recon they have gone way too far with this J40 sailboat. This is a bit of a rant and I should imagine I won't be getting an invite to test sail this one?

Flipping (renovating) our French house to buy a boat

Have a Very Happy New Year Ladies. After a very interesting near Death 2024, that I am still recovering from, I think an update is in order, and I have sadly no alternative but to modify my Testing Plans, which required a bigger boat such as a Catalina 44 series. After seeing the Practical Sailor Channel (hosted by Tim of Lady K Channel ) video on Sailboat Drones, and my ideas on low air Draft Masts with in Mast Furling and Short booms actually working and proving extremely tough, durable, and reliable enough to deliberately Sailboat into and out of a Category 4 Hurricane taking Measurements, I feel a priority for me now, is to prove the concept as very worthwhile for consideration by the Cruising and Voyaging Community. So we need relevant Data and working strong Main Sail designs. So in Pursuit of all , I have contacted Darrell of Island Packet to provide me with the length of Boom from the Mast to a Mainsheet Traveller positioned just in Front of the Sprayhood, and to ask Selden if they can make a boom that length, and to check with Selden if that length of Boom will allow a massively strong Main Sail to be fully furled inside the Mast. With a 40 foot height above the Waterline, most of the drive forces from the Sail should then be much closer to the Cabin top, reducing the amount of heeling, and hopefully be a big help in reducing the risk of Capsizing. With an efficiently Designed Triradial Battenless Sail with say three reinforced reefing points, the effect on Boat speed should be minimal and under one knot, though the Sail design will likely need to go through a number of modifications. Ideally, after the second reef, all of the Sail exposed right at the mast, and therefore ideally positioned, will be able to function as an effective Staysail due to the massive overall strength of the Sail, and work as a solid reinforcement when the two reefs are furled, but likely to need substantial tweaking . It appears that the IP349 is the ideal Test bed for this, and hopefully the Piggybank gets filled in 2025 with enough to place an order with Island Packet. If I survive to the point of regaining Full Health and Strength, then The Testing of other Stuff I would like to Test, can be done with a slightly bigger Sailboat. Darrell has a very good record of Communicating with me, such as the Custom option of having a second head available for the 349 - with Crew, Guests, or entertaining, to me, a second head is somewhat essential, so depending when Selden Christmas break might end, a reply shouldn’t be that long in coming. He has also said, that if my finances get tight, to have a chat with him, as with a custom build, expensive non essentials could be left out, so the size of the Piggybank needed, may well be reduced. So Fingers crossed there may be light at the end of the Tunnel, that isn’t an approaching express train.🤣 Bob. 👍

One thing I always wonder about is why not extend the hard cover all the way back. As long as you make access to ropes easy and make exists easy to get in and out from, it just makes no sense to be exposed to elements too much. It would also give more solar space. Even when you are just lounging, I don't think you want to bake in sun.

The J40 doesn't need twin rudders due to the choice made regarding stern width. The stern doesn't need to be unusually wide given the nature of a J40. Mast hydraulic jack & shim rig tensioning isn't necessary or desirable on a 40 foot sailboat even if it does have a carbon mast.

I too was shocked at the literally unbearable noise in the aft cabins when the engine is running. Imagine spending €2,000,000 or thereabouts and damaging your hearing whilst trying to sleep! Similarly @20.45 and the lack of hand-holds and safety rails coming down from the flybridge in heavy weather. Big high stainless rails inboard, but nothing outboard? That said, no big deal because if you can afford to buy a boat like this, you can afford to buy the extra stainless and you can afford to soundproof the engine rooms.

Side note Sailing Sweet Ruca are a really nice Couple, but not a channel in line with my type of Sailing, and this was really brought home by them being forced to anchor outside the Reef of a Pacific island lagoon, because the Draft of their boat was way too deep to let them Sail in. All of my prior Classic Sailboats have had close to a 4 foot Draft, loved the heavily built Bilge Keel Sailboats, and particularly my friend ‘Crasher’ Steve’s Macwester 25, which was the first Comfortable Sailboat I Crewed on, and that thing was as tougher than an outside Toilet, and even survived Steve ignoring instructions that the final buoy marking where to turn to Port to avoid the Rocks going fast in an inflowing Tide, had him crashing the Boat at full speed into the Rocks, such that the Mast with a loud audible Twang went forward, as did the boat until it left the rocks, none of the standing rigging Broke, no water came in below, and we waited until the boat dried out to check for damage, and there were just small gelcoat hips in each keel, which I fixed before the tide came n. That’s how Crasher got his nickname, and if it was possible to embed it in a Sandbar Crasher would embed it in a Sandbar. Great guy though, other than being a Sailing incompetent. A genius with Horses and making Money though, he was a self made millionaire three times, and three wives ended up swell off, when a million was still a lot of money. I would have gone anywhere on that tough as old boots Macwester though, talk about a boat to inspire Confidence. The only thing it needed was a major upgrade in Engine power, as the Dolphin two stroke inboard totally Sucked. 🤔🌟🌟🌟👍🎄❤️⛵️

Yep 2.2 mtr Draft Way too deep for me, but you may have noticed that I have pretty much Surrendered Big Time for a 5 foot Draft and an ICW friendly Mast height to get a very Comfortable Live Aboard Catalina 42/44 of 5 or 6 series production which buggers right up my plans of Continuing to get into Estuaries and up navigable Rivers, which has been a real passion of mine. Ah well, Sacrifices and compromises have to be made, even if glumly, until the right boxes to tick start appearing on Construction Option Lists I suppose. Final Live Aboard Boat being a Motor Cruiser can recover the Fun of that, with no Draft or Mast height problems to worry about, plus Canal (which I usually find claustrophobic) Route through France and down to the Med Though I have done that a few times by Motorbike, may have me getting there by Michael of Sailing Gently Channel, could well have me doing his Gentle Sailing Route to the Med, along the Coasts of France, Spain, and Portugal, which should be just as wonderful a trip, as it is by Sailboat. That route is so popular, it is now in its 12th Edition. The poor guy broke his leg, a week before he was due to fly out post Hurricane Season to his Beneteau Oceanis 323 which this season he kept in Martinique. But he is back on board now, and faces the soon arriving mending leg insufferable itching, and he may not have the usual relief of a knitting needle to scratch inside his plaster cast with. PS. Great Tour, and very well said by the Way, that is a hell of a lot of money for a 40 foot Sailboat. While NOT a Racing Sailboat, I can get a far Superior Cruising Catalina 425 Brand New unused 2023 model for close to 200,000 dollars less than that believe it or not, which is fully kitted out and ready to go,and if it is still available when my Piggybank finally fills back up, I will expect an even lower price to snap their hands off, even with a 5 Foot Draft, and ICW friendly Mast Height. I will be forced to suffer in Comfort thanks very much, or a similar discount on the Catalina 445.Tough Choice. Expect similar discounts on Unsold 2024/2025 model 426 and 446 Sailboats as well frankly. All those models, plus if big enough the 380 based models are extremely well performing excellent Live aboard Sailboats. The 385 for example can be had with I think a 4 ft 8 inch Draft plus ICW friendly Mast Height, but unfortunately I really need a bigger Sailboat. All with nice Curvy in all the right places and Beamy ish hulls, and not sure about engine options with the 380 class, but larger have very nice larger engine options, for example 57 hp Yanmar option with the 425 and direct drive. Any Anchor will fit on the Bowsprit too. Great leak proof Standing Rigging Deck fittings, and so much good stuff built up from years of Customer feedback.I think I have finally found a Sailboat that I can live Comfortably with, though access into and out of places I would like to go - into estuaries and up Rivers is pretty much Ruled Out - still, can’t win them all,and all Compromises are very easy to live with, a bit better than usual tankage, a water desalinator takes care of extra needs, good enough beam for adequate Solar , decent Northern Lights Generator - not dodgy Fischer Panda, so looking after batteries to keep them in tip top Condition is no problem and a shocking amount of other well designed very good liveaboard Stuff along with it, and all to an outstanding build standard. To be honest, Only a Beneteau Oceanis comes close and for less Mondy. Is the extra for a Catalina worth it as some Ask ? Well if you are very careful about when you buy an overbought unsold model after the launch of a new model year, that new unused Catalina might just cost you less, for a much better long term live aboard Sailboat ? It’s the little but highly intelligent features that rapidly mount up, such as the Chain plates accessibility, the bowsprit that can handle pretty much any anchor, plus a second one, and the large chain locker, really nice galley that is secure to use under way, I like the forward Pullman berth with the heads and shower forward, and an ok with the Day head being a set head in the Tropics, just get a Wand Shower Head for it and with a nice pumpy soap Dispenser and a micro fiber hand towel, you have a hygienic Bidet setup for the Tropics, and easy wash and dry towels system for them to dry off on the side rails, even without a Washing Machine.I know, I’ve Rabbited on again, but it is a bit exciting to finally find a Sailboat that I can live with, even if I have to make a few Sacrifices in the places I would really like to get to with one, and I still have the 4 foot Draft Island Packet 349 in Second place to fall ack on if needed, but the Catalina pips it. Merry Christmas To All. Bob. ❤️⛵️🎄

@ Hi Ladies.👍 Tim of Lady K Channel, and also editor Now Of Practical Sailor Magazine TH-cam Channel, has just posted a video of Sailboat Drones, and guess what I spotted on it ? One of the Drones has a dead ringer of my design for a very short Boom on a low air Draft Mast, allowing a very narrow blade like Main Sail, which with in Mast Furling and a well built Sail, should be very difficult to over Power, and over Stress the Sail Cloth as a Result, and there it was, working just like I thought it would, as an excellent option for a Cruising Sailboat.Seeing that is the Best Christmas Present I have had this year yet. 👍🌟🌟🌟❤️⛵️ Merry Christmas! Bob.🎄

Hi Ladies. I forget the name of the Channel on TH-cam now, but the Owners of a J45 took theirs successfully around Cape Horn, and when in the Pacific took on a Catamaran in a Race and I was Cheering them on as they Comfortably won that Race. 😅 Other than that though, tbh Sailboats like this are so diametrically opposite my kind of Sailboat, such that it wouldn’t be fair to comment that there isn’t anything on this Sailboat, no matter how well built and equipped it might be, other than hoping it is available with a Yanmar inboard diesel, for much better global availability of Spares. Volvo seriously need to get their act together in that regard frankly and I actually like their engines, but even though Volvo spares are chronically overpriced, at least make them easily globally available? I ❤ their Saildrives too, so it is more than a bit sad really, as you need to go to at least the 80 hp Yanmar, to get Anna’s good ZF Saildrive, though to be fair the often unmentioned problem Cone issue with Yanmar Saildrives did receive a significant Upgrade kit fix several years ago now, so owners need to check whether the Upgrade Fix has been done to theirs, or has been already applied to new Saildrives. Too much silence has surrounded this issue frankly. Usual moan over, so a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to All. Bob.🤔🌟🌟🌟👍❤️⛵️🎄🎄🎄

It was a little hard but it was a boat we were expecting a lot from being the history and DNA of J,boats but was so sadly disappointed. I would love to get out on the water with one of these and be shown that once again they have in fact built a great boat, but I can't see that happening.

@@nooneusesthisname I still have a derelict Cottage on a Smallholding to play with at some point, though it all got Chernobyl hit in 1986, so needs to be left until about 2086 to have the land checked, so I will leave it to my young nephew I think, as he could build something nice to retire on, if it proves safe enough by then. These are such a rarity now, the value has skyrocketed, but I couldn’t sell it to anyone in good Conscience, though it could presently be used for bottling Spring water, as the water is really good. 🤔

Great video, what makes your reviews stand out, is they are authentic, and because you don’t bullshit. Many other reviews out there are more like sales videos. I get the impression that the boats in the 35-40ft range seem to have adequate kitchen / lounge space, but where they fall short is the bedrooms. However, a 40ft catamaran has more than enough space. I’d be interested to see your perspective on cat Vs monohul 👍

@@SVTONICBoatWivesIf you do then please compare $$ for $$ not by length. Comparing a 40ft cat to a 40 ft mono is meaningless when the cat costs twice as much. When you compare cats to monos of the same $$ then I believe the following becomes apparent: Cats have shoal draught and no heeling, upstairs saloon with a view, easier docking, but more difficult sailing & a quicker motion. Monos are generally but not always better upwind, are structurally simpler and are more forgiving to sail. They are harder to dock. What is generally NOT realised until comparing $ for $ is that: Monohulls are not smaller or slower than multihulls as the mono will have more waterline length and is less slowed by payload. Years of delivering yachts and cruising has led me to be continually surprised at the comparatively moderate days runs that most cats achieve in the real world.

@@SVTONICBoatWives That Discussion could get really interesting, if you have watched Practical Sailor Channel’s Video on amazing Sailboat Drones, which should have a terrific impact on Cruising Monohull Design, and it is not insignificant that all of the drones appear to be Monohulls, for very good reasons. Imagine being able to safely get out of a Category 4 hurricane in a Cruising Sailboat, when only a fool, would deliberately Sail, into one ? It was Tim of Lady K who put that video u by the way, and it is so Significant there should be a massive pay off in Sailboat Designs imho..Well, s they help illustrate my thinking, sure helps I suppose.🙂 All the best. Hi! I follow a couple who's going on a circumnavigation on the route I find more interesting: throught Patagonia. They're americans and sail a J46 with a few years. Their backround is regatta sailing. It's great to see how one understand the other's moves, they a very fine tuned sailing couple. It is a pleasure to see how their boat navigates. On Cape Horn it reminded me of my crazy sailing days on a Laser under heavy weather in Búzios. great fun, fast, wind on the face, water splashing - but they were on a 46 foot very stable boat. Beautiful! J Boats left an impression on me due to "Sweet Ruca". I find this J 40 a somewhat strange boat. I believe it must be a nice sailing one, due to J's DNA. But lacks a definition, a reason to exist. It''s a mutant in the middle of the transformation. It has dual helm but it's not that wide. The hull look a mix of an older project with a renewd interior. The single bathroom is very small. Ok, it's a day regatta sail boat, one can say. But its kitchen and saloon go in the other direction. And it has a nav table! Anything that tries to be everything ends up being nothing. Seems to be the case here. And that price!! You're perfectly right! Wow! I'd prefer a well defined Halberg Rassy 340 - or a bigger used one - to this without a blink of the eyes. It's an american boat. Maybe in America they like specs this way and have money to spend on it. But I'm with you: this is the most nonsense boat ever on this channel! A VERY Merry Christmas to you all, have a great family time and Happy Holidays!

Bravo. I admire reviewers who are not afraid to give honest reviews- it makes your enthusiasm for boats such as the Moodys and Garcias more meaningful. I sail the J/105 and J/35c all the time, so love J Boats, but this J/40 doesn't do much for me. You are right to compare it to the Dehler- I've been able to sail the Dehler 38 SQ recently and it's a great boat. The J/40 is also weirdly heavy for a racing boat- fully a 1000# heavier than the old Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40.

Glad you liked it, I was so excited to get on this boat, as a fan of J boats I was expecting big things. Well, it's sad to say but it was a big let down and I know Toby's test sail went well, they were getting boat speed slightly faster than wind speed (downwind I might add with a lot of canvas) but that's nothing new with J boats. We have been invited to test the RM1080 in February/March 2025, we can't wait as we know the shipyard has made a few little changes.
