Patching Ideas & Sonic Tips | Integrating the Moog Labyrinth with the Sound Studio
In this video, I’m going to show you a few ways to use the Moog Labyrinth with the Moog Sound Studio. I’ll explain in depth how to path everything together. Hopefully this will give you some inspiration!!!
Labyrinth is a parallel generative analog synthesizer based around two complimentary voice paths and a powerful generative dual sequencer. Labyrinth’s voice architecture features a unique parallel processing path that includes both circuits for subtractive synthesis and complex spectra generation. It features a newly designed Voltage-Controlled Wavefolder, a Voltage-Controlled Filter that can morph between low-pass and band-pass modes, voltage-controlled blending between the two parallel voice paths, and a wealth of modulation options both hard-wired and patchable. The dual sequencer is designed around a generative process that can play two separate poly-metric sequences of up to eight steps each, or a single sequence up to 16 steps which can be used to control the oscillators and processing elements of Labyrinth. Taken together, Labyrinth can easily and quickly generate a wide range of mutating timbres like deep kick drums, electric bongos, alien bell tones, twisted FM sounds, or delicate sine wave melodies.

    Funny how sometimes you see something you already know but then something clicks in your mind. I realized while watching this nice video that a 1-to-4 seq switch suits trigger signals better than a 4-to-1 seq switch, which is just overkill and useless for triggers in the end. I was testing the Octa Switch module by Doepfer with this wrong approach, and I just got nothing better from trigger patterns. The patch was just complex for nothing. Things need to be simpler and make quick changes to patterns a switch at a time. Leaving an output empty is also a good choice in this case. It's really compelling to have each voice being triggered separately, not at the same time, and have a patch that evolve while respecting this separation between voices. Now the music is complex, not the patch. Easier to mix as well. Thanks to this video and one about how to make dub techno by Martin Stürtzer for this epiphany. I'm going to rectify my performance patch based on this "separation" idea. Thank you!

I also wonder if the power supply had something to do with that. But if you like noisy, raucous, distortion - this one's for you! Not a fan of that AJH VCO, but the price difference is pretty obvious due to workmanship involved. VCO in a chip (Doepfer) is obviously cheaper than discrete architecture VCO (AJH) with transistor-pair matching. Some high-end VCOs even have digital temperature compensation to provide better v/oct tracking stability while keeping its analog sound, that's extra $$$.

    Another affordable way, though not strictly a "case"as such, is to use a 12U rack with 3 or 4 Behringer "Eurorack Rack"s. Each comes with a power supply (+12v, -12v and +5v @ 3000mA) and 2 flying buss cables. That will give you 3 or 4 rows of 84 HP. And as it is not enclosed you have access at the back for modules of any depth. Cost wise you're looking at £30 - £50 GBP for the 12U tabletop rack and about £95 GBP each for the Eurorack Racks so that works out at about £410-£440 for 4 rows I have 3 rows and at the bottom a 6 gang 19" power strip, an 8 in\out audio interface and an 8in\out ADAT strip. I've used this live and the only issue I had was that my Quiklok 19" rack is a bit top heavy and I taped a heavy bar to the base so it doesn't tip over forwards. I'm looking for a rack with a profile that leans bach at a deeper angle. Alternatively 2 EurorackGO cases are about £270 each and give you 4 rows of 168HP including power. I know that Behringer is rather divisive, but if money is tight it's the best bang per buck I think especially for newbs like me! Cheers ✌️

    This seems like an incredibly affordable system for the power it delivers when compared to other power systems out there. Thanks for sharing!

    Loving your Moog tutorials. Learned so much! I've managed to sync my M32 with my Maschine mk3 via MIDI cable and I have my M32 patched into my DFAM. On my M32, I can now easily change the note durations to slow it down if I'm doing something like D&B at 170bpm. BUT! I can't seem to figure out how to slow down the DFAM too. Is there a way to do this? Thanks!

    • @braintree56
      @braintree56 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yep. Assuming you're going from the assignable output to the DFAM, you have some options. First, on Page 1 of the Setup Menu - option 3 divides the sequencer clock of the mother by 2. Option 4 will slow it down by dividing by 4! If that doesn't get you where you want to go, you could change the Clock Output PPQN on page 5. Hope that helps!

    ive never used sounds, only samples. what happens when you do ctrl-all, do the parameters within each sound change or are they locked? is it possible to change Sounds with cc messages in the same way you can do it with the SRC list of samples?

    • @braintree56
      @braintree56 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The parameters would change in the project, but the Sound itself in the bank would stay the same.... It's really confusing at first. It would be like if you brought a photo file into a slideshow - did all sorts of manipulation in the slideshow. The photo would look different in the slideshow, but if you brought the same file into a different slideshow, it would look like the original... (Unless you save the changes to the sound). You are essentially making 'sounds' right now when you are working with samples. Saving them as sounds just lets you save those parameters for recall in different projects. Yes! You can use CC in the same way.

      @@braintree56 thanks for elaborating - ok so that's a little different to how ctrl-all normally works? I thought if you had plocked any settings then they were locked and ctrl-all couldnt change them - I will experiment with this. Re- changing sounds using cc - I looked in the cc chart and couldnt see it in there? what I mean is you can cc control the SRC for each track and thus move up and down the sample list - I'd love to be able to do this with Sounds too - do you know what the cc number is for it please?

    Is there anyway to create a stutter effect?

    • @braintree56
      @braintree56 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You'd have to get creative, but maybe using the LFO to modulate the amp. Or you might be able to just retrig the sample depending on what you are going for.

    I’ve had Maths twice and sold it twice. Both times I saw it as a) a pair of AD envelopes with cycling options, b) a pair of attenuators, and c) er… that’s it. I’ve just watched this video very carefully, and I now see it as two AD envelopes and two attenuators that can also be half-wave rectifiers. That would be a useful package in 8hp- but dammit, it’s still 20hp, and it’s still nothing special. I’ve watched every video out there, and while everyone maintains that it’s all-singing all-dancing, no-one can demonstrate it. Good video though. No-one else had managed to get over that it was a rectifier. Did you ever make that second video?

    • @braintree56
      @braintree56 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I hear you. I think there's a lot of mystique around it, like there's some sort of secret sauce there. When really it's just a sort of swiss army knife of functionality. But - realistically, I think the smallest you could get two Envelopes is 8hp and the smallest you could get a dual attenuverter is 8 hp. So that's 16hp. Plus you do get CV control over the Attack and Decay. With the other bonuses of the additional outs and the ability to mix things. I'm still in the camp that it's worth it to have as opposed to a collection of smaller modules that do the same thing. BUT - I do think the mystique is a little bit over the top.

    thanks for all the great tutorials... I have synched my M32 and DFAM with M32 as master then midi cable to my NI S61mk3 from M32 so I can send midi clock to from DAW (no midi out on my Apollo). I have a D&B track at 172bpm and my M32 and DFAM are going nuts! Wanting to slow them down to at least a quarter of what theyre playing at. Can I do this?

    • @braintree56
      @braintree56 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah, you could do that. There's a bunch of different ways you could configure it. You could set the sequencer to a longer division - or if you look into the menu options, you could change some of the settings there. Let me know if you need some help setting that up and I can try to figure out more explicit directions.

    Can you do video how to set it to minor scale? Or can you tune each note separetly?

    • @braintree56
      @braintree56 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You can tune the notes separately. IF you set it to 12 steps. On the 8 step mode you are limited to the notes of the C Major scale. So you could play in A minor, but that's it. Alternatively you could use some sort of control voltage to move transpose the scale to whatever you would like. I would just stick to 12 steps equal temperment to keep it as assessible as possible.
