Also it's worth noting that third hands exist for soldering. Usually they have alligator clips on goosenecks to hold the board for you, and often have a magnifying glass mount so you can have everything positioned perfectly, no balancing act, no burnt fingers.

I might try one of those some day.

Absolutely worth it, even a cheap one will do fine for casual soldering, it upped my game a *lot*

Sorry to comment-bomb, but another tip, use an organizer tray of some kind (even an ice cube tray could work) and if the components come connected to paper tape, etc, to label the component paper tape and remove one component at a time from the it as you go. That way the rest of the resistors, for example will be easily identified when you accidentally dump a bunch on the ground, which WILL happen. ❤

I appreciate the comments. That's a great idea. Luckily these components came in prelabeled separate bags!

Definitely worth noting that many PCB makers include funny little phrases on the board, such as "This Machine Kills Fascists" 😊

I'm far from an expert on soldering as well, but your technique is solid. One tip I read was to heat the pad and the component wire with the tip of the iron while applying the solder to the opposite side of the component wire to ensure the component wire and pad heat up before the solder does to avoid cold joints.

I appreciate that! I try to do that as much as possible. I've found that if I hold the tip more upright it becomes easier. Maybe more contact with the component? Either way, so far, all my joints have been working! :)
