I am a filmmaker but twenty years ago worked as a youth worker in the Anglican Church in the UK & US.
I started making videos about faith and my experience in churches in the UK and US this year. I first made one in response to the news that came out in Britain about Mike Pilavachi and Soul Survivor. I had been on one of the courses in 1998, Mike invited me and another lad to his flat where we wrestled in his bedroom.
I'm now using my TH-cam channel to explore my past, examine what was good, and what was destructive. I think the Anglican, Evangelical and Charismatic parts of the church need challenging and I'm looking for people to help me consider and talk about where it's going so wrong. I'm also filming with people from different faiths and backgrounds to Christianity.
I'm interested in telling stories with extraordinary people, who do things that the majority of us don't quite manage to do.
Please get in touch with any ideas around collaboration or work.

Driving home with Diego Barraza following my conversation with Rev Robert Thompson
I was really thankful that Diego Barraza filmed with me when I spoke with Robert Thompson - he asked me how I think it went. These conversations aren't about wrapping things up, there about connection and openness, vulnerability and honesty.

Can I just add, evil in the church and church hurt is nothing new. It's mentioned by Paul in the Bible many time and connot be rooted out... That being said, sunlight is truly the best disinfectant and I believe you are providing this light where evil will find it harder to hide. I just want to add the following article from the 39 articles of the Church of England's Book of Common Prayer... "XXVI. Of the Unworthiness of the Ministers, which hinders not the effect of the Sacrament Although in the visible Church the evil be ever mingled with the good, and sometimes the evil have chief authority in the Ministration of the Word and Sacraments, yet forasmuch as they do not the same in their own name, but in Christ's, and do minister by his commission and authority, we may use their Ministry, both in hearing the Word of God, and in receiving of the Sacraments. Neither is the effect of Christ's ordinance taken away by their wickedness, nor the grace of God's gifts diminished from such as by faith and rightly do receive the Sacraments ministered unto them; which be effectual, because of Christ's institution and promise, although they be ministered by evil men. Nevertheless, it appertaineth to the discipline of the Church, that inquiry be made of evil Ministers, and that they be accused by those that have knowledge of their offences; and finally being found guilty, by just judgement be deposed." The problems of the evil ones in the church was around from Judas, and will ever persist. But your ground work here on this platform will help save lives, this I am in no doubt. Church Hurt is very real and people have taken their own lives when they had been ostracised by their own faith community by believing that they have been distance from God. God bless you and this channel.
This is a lovely and well put together series by the way.
She Bu, my home
I thought this and your longer video with Robert about the state of the Church of England were really interesting and insightful conversations. My position on sexuality and marriage is a conservative one, and while I disagree with Robert on this I was impressed with his fair representation of both sides of the argument.
Thanks for your comment - needing 'a position' is pretty damning, whether it's to maintain the status quo of the religion we take identity in, or it challenges the environment we've built around us. This language gives insight to how we see others, I really value your part in the conversation - we have a long way to go!
Myers Briggs seemed very astute to me.
I thought the same, but Dougie convinced me otherwise.

Off to the pub
I went to the Soul Survivor conferences from about 2010 to 2014. I enjoyed it the first time. I'd never gone to anything like it really, but all the very Charismatic, hyper-evangelical stuff never sat right with me after that. I think hyper-emotional worship can be highly manipulative. I don't believe it when anyone who says they can feel 'the spirit' moving, especially when the "holy synth pads" are alternating between C and F over speaking in tongues and a never ending prayer. There's always a hip, down with the kids preacher who says that God doesn’t show up in the way we expect, yet the "Spirit" always "shows up" in exactly the same way in the same time during the service. I don't think it can quite be called a cult though. As far as I could tell, there was no financial manipulation, there's no attempt to get you to join the specific 'sect'. There's not enough that's close enough to the definition of cult to give it that label IMHO. Not to mention that there was no attempt to split from the Anglican Church as a body, which you would expect from a cult. Obviously the CofE wasn't giving enough oversight, but still... I don't think it fits the classification. I can't speak for any other churches, but certainly from groups that went to Soul Survivor conferences, very few stayed in the church and the faith at all. Those that did stay only did because they either had a big familial connection in the church, or because they were already solid in their faith before Soul Survivor. I had only grown up in charismatic, hyper-evangelical churches up that point. Honestly, it has been a joy to discover a more traditional, theologically rich and consistent churches over the last decade.
Thanks for your comment. If you look at earlier videos I made, I speak about the wrestling (and massage) I experienced with Mike Pilavachi in his flat. Many others experienced far worse and more protracted.
These are the aspects along with the ongoing cover up and lack of responsibility taken is what I'm inadvertently referring to when likening SS to a cult.
@ Would you say the cult-like elements are more readily found the higher up you go in SS? I'm sorry that you went through that. I'm glad we're getting your first-hand story of it though, the news articles about Mike don't really give any indication of exactly the degree of severity and inappropriateness of his actions if you know what I mean. So thank you for speaking out about it!
Sam, thank you for all your work on this. On a less serious note: do we need to set up a crowd-funder for some studio lights?
Thanks for subscribing - if you want to set up a crowdfunder to help oil the wheels of the channel - I'd be v happy. Cheers
_Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived_ ... It strikes me the modern C of E no longer believes this. It is deceived and thinks that there are no consequences for unrighteous behaviour, including the failure to live out Christian sex ethics, amongst those who profess to believe. Supposed charismatic evangelicals, who of all people ought to reflect the NT faith, but who don't live it out will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Our children went to SS and they saw it was all total con. They know the music just manipulated people to an emotional state and they saw through the so called "prophetic" words. When 10,000 young people are gathered and someone 'prophesies' that there is someone her with emotional problems they are basically calling out every other one there😂 Nothing prophetic at all. Our children enjoyed it for the music and companionship but spiritually it was empty.
most things are.
That sounds positive. I loved the music and the socialisation, it was amazing to walk around a whole showground at 10 at night seeing loads of other young people who believed what you did. But I was far more optimistic about the spirituality... it's such a shame money, ego, power and religion took over.
These talks are very insightful. However a brief introduction would also help.😊
Thanks for the thought. I guess I'm hoping people are following the videos I'm producing - please do watch the video about my experience with Mike Pilavachi - this provides most context for this video.
PUPPY!
Fr Robert is a lovely guy - I fear it all gets on top of him too much but he’s a lovely guy
He is fantastic and needs more supporters!
From a Biblical perspective, Soul Survivor was a success because many people became Christians and saw God at work through the organisation - despite it's flaws. And that is the gospel, that Christ builds his kingdom despite our flaws and brokenness. That's what Mike preached. Safeguarding, money and leadership, important as they are, are not ways to measure the kingdom.
Mike preached humility on stage, but in his inner circle he would use emotional manipulation to make sure that people did as he wanted. If you watch the documentary by Matt and Beth Redman, they talk about the ways Mike controlled those around him.
Hi - thanks for your comment - 'people becoming Christian's' is something I'm not 100% sure of - it looks great to see loads of kids walking to the front to be prayed for, but what has happened to them since?
How can someone/anyone who stands for what the Bible says, be for same sex relationships and call it biblical, it’s clearly NOT
Wasn’t Jesus gay though? Thinking of the passage in John’s gospel where he reclines with the disciple he loved most after the last supper.
@ 🙄 nice try troll
But why would you object to Jesus being gay?
@ prove your not t a troll and I’ll talk, otherwise I’m not wasting my time
And if what Im claiming makes you angry this just shows that you’re starting a journey of realising that chiid sex abuse carried out in the name of Jesus is the real moral outrage here.
Don’t understand where you are coming from. It seems very narrow minded and defensive.
Hey, thanks for your comment - if you have time, please watch my other videos, titled Soul Survivor or Mike Pilavachi. I personally experienced some of the physicality and mistreatment that he has been reported of doing over a 25 year period. Please subscribe!

Hit the nail on the head, autonomy from the Church and putting their senior leader before Jesus for which they supposedly existed to worship.
20% of those you speak to are those without a conscience. Be careful. The veneer is thick and takes on many forms.
I am really interested in your talks. At the moment going through the list. Thanks for posting. However, the thing that confuses and is disappointing to me, is the comments from people who leave the church and lose their faith? It makes me curious about what sort of relationship they had if any with Jesus anyway to walk away from Him? Get the walking away from church.
people who grow up in families that divorce, often 'lose' faith in marriage. I'm not sure it's that dissimilar.
Your wife was so right. We can read the Bible, we can listen to preachers, we can worship God but in the end we have to work out our own salvation 'in fear and trembling'. We do not make ourselves vulnerable to people who have no training nor any rules regarding confidentiality in place.
💯

The true church, called out ones, will of course survive, but the man made institutions should not survive. Let's see them for what they are.... Man made controlling institutions.
It certainly seems that way standing on the outside looking in.
Hi Sam, you could start listening to Chuck Missler and Dave Hunt and Tom Wadsworth re the history of organised religion. Jesus was never about buildings vestments music religious ceremony or titles. The Cof E is built on faulty foundations!!! I attended a local CofE on Christmas day. In the order of service booklet it said, let's now pray to Mary to intercede for us. You MUST do more research. Join or start a home group and read the Bible.
Leave the Anglo Catholics alone
I attended a church over 20 years ago where they did ministry time at the end of every service and it soon became obvious that there was a cohort of people who went up for ministry time every single week. Clearly the ministry wasn't working for them if they were coming back week-in and week out. The danger is that the evangelical church presents ministry time as a quick, almost magical fix to people's problems, without the need for a disciplined, consistent Christian life.
you've reminded me of one person I remember who used to return to the front at every big event call 'to be saved' again and again.
🤣🤣🤣
I see that a black lady Bishop is among those from whom the next Archbishop will be chosen... If the left have their way....
Bishop Rose of Dover?
"Who is William Nye?". A perfect example of the problem - the insidious false assumption that control and power in the Church of England lies fully, or even in the majority, with clergy and bishops.
Writing as an older Christian (72) I still wonder why no petition was raised requiring the resignation of Welby, after he ordered the locking of the Parish Churches of England, during covid: something not even contemplated during the 1980s (The Decade of AIDS)? This is a man - plainly lacking in belief - who had the temerity to inmagine himself "called" to occupy the Chair of Augustine. Single-handedly (in a manner remeniscent of Johnson and the Conservative Party; and using the same 'weapon') the Globalist-Communist 'insert', Welby, has managed to take down the Church of England. Not the hierarchy of "career-clergy" of course (they will go on promoting, and paying, themselves, abusing the language of "calling", until the cows come home!), but the Christians who turn up on Sundays, and maintain the churches, who simply want to worship, and remember that Last Supper. You mention that bishops today fail to take responsibility: but bishops ought not to be politicians. Failure to "take responsibility" is the marque of the current Globalist-Communist politician. If you are seeing this in the C of E, what does that tell you about my parallel between Welby and Johnson? Did I mention that both went to Eton? So things are as they should be......Establishment-wise.
I'm not sure if Welby would have made a better politician, I doubt it, however making a decent crust from 'big oil' - would suggest regular temporary lapses in personal principle, morality and ethics. When studying at Ridley Hall in 2003, we were told to expect all of the main denominations to be broke by 2020, I'm surprised the C of E still has so much dosh - the rule in documentary filmmaking is 'follow the money' - perhaps this should be the plan.
@@SamHowson Hi Sam, I studied Theology back in the 1970s (Durham & Bangor) but - unable to be ordained (I'm in a Civil Partnership after forty-one years of love) I ended up as a Registered Nurse. I'm astonished that your lecturers at Ridley Hall were so prophetic: although I used to correspond with the late Monica Furlong (author of 'Christian Uncertainties') and predicted, to her, that "the ship of the Church will founder on the rocks of human sexuality". That was in the 1970s. By that, I did not intend, as a consequence of sexual scandals: but from a failure to follow Mark 2:27; using the insights of the contemporary 'human sciences' to start with 'human beings', and then derive doctrine. This, of course, is impossible for 'scriptural literalists' (although they would appear to have performed this very exercise in the case of Evolutionary Theory, the role of women, and slavery). The prissy, hissy, fundamentalists just have a major problem with sex: so much so that they even involve the Creator of all that is, in their machinations.
Like he who started the Church of England , Henry VIII, your current Head of the Church is a divorced person, a philanderer, and an adulterer. What sort of example is this for a Christian church? Now you have no spiritual leader with the resignation of the Archbishop of Canterbury. What’s worse, is that you deny the essential humanity of gay people. Good riddance to bad rubbish I say.
the last abc was cardinal pole (d.1558)..since then a series of usurers’ appointees have larped in the post..when a wimminpriest goes through a mockery of the rite of incardination, apostolicae curae will have achieved peak infallibility
No.
why so sure?
Here you strongly suggest that the author of The Purpose Driven Life, Rick Warren, has had a string of affairs. He has not. So please delete this video immediately.
@ So you think serious slander and libel is ok do you?
No. Apostasy is Irrecoverable, the Epistle to the Hebrews is gravely clear on that, the Cult of England (yes, I am the Originator of that name) is Finished and whatever Bible Believing Christians are left need to *leave at once* and try and Join a GAFCON affiliated Church if they can! There is no doubt in my mind that the next arch-heretic will be a Woman, and that will bring down the full, Just, Holy, Indignant, Furious and Unstoppable *Wrath of God!* So Get out of the CofE as fast as you can!
This priest has a pet inside a church? No wonder this church is in a mess.
This is a fantastic series by the way and your testament mirrors closely the testament of many. In a way, you finding your niche in this topic is your ministry and will eventually lead people back to Christ. God bless you ❤
I'm trying to follow him by speaking with people, thanks for being part of this.
This should be on TV. Important discussion to be had and reflections and actions still to be addressed by the organization.
with you on camera - it should be on the big screen!
I'm a life long and devout Anglican and to be honest with you I would rather the Anglican church does not survive if it does not revere nor serve Christ Jesus. The church was made for man not man for the church. If the institution rapes us on the evangelical side and on the conservative or Anglo Catholic side the church no longer serves a purpose.
Sorry to seem terse but evil has genuinely pervaded the church ❤
I'm not sure if evil has pervaded the church, but people haven't come together to challenge the bullshit until recently.
@SamHowson whatever it is, my brother in Christ, I hold your hand along this journey you choose to take ❤️
Great conversation - thanks for sharing.
The most encouraging word I ever had was a few years ago from someone I barely knew who had a dream about me. She whatsApped me early on a Sunday morning. It was incredibly encouraging and spoke about God's heart for me. A lot of stuff I've heard over the years borders on crystal ball gazing.
The church service have-a-go-hero really did get predictable eh?
In the Church I attended in my 20s there was a huge emphasis on attending groups. You could spend almost every evening in Church/ Church related activities. It was stifling and exhausting. These days Church on a Sunday morning is all I can sometimes cope with. I have zero desire to be part of a small group. It all feels very claustrophobic.
I spoke with someone yesterday saying they couldn't imagine going to Sunday mornings as they value that time after a busy week more than anything
Yes. God speaks in so many different ways inside and outside of church. Why the need to give God a 15 minute slot in a service? Just so limiting and uncreative. I questioned a leader who said before he preached, ' isn't it great when the Holy Spirit draws close?' Anyone in that room who experienced nothing would feel alienated and the leader had elevated his godliness in one sentence.Just thoughtless and unhelpful. Thank God we are not created to be clones of each other.
Perhaps the individual was so unaware, he just got a kick out of being at the front etc and confused that.
“Whatever you did to the least of one of these, you did to me.”

One of the biggest problems with manipulative, dark triad types, is that they are either attracted to toxic cultures, or they change the culture gradually to suit themselves and become untouchable. I’ve heard of great groups or churches getting one toxic person and it all goes down the gurgler. Sometimes the first sign is that they begin pushing your boundaries to see how malleable people are and how much they can get people to compromise on their values. The weak people will accommodate the toxicity, and the people with strong principles will start leaving (either quietly jumping ship, or finding themselves the target of conflict and hate campaigns).
Spot on. Thanks. Please subscribe!
