Inkscape Personalised Rose Tutorial For Laser Cutting
Love the video. I’m trying to figure out buying my first laser. Would a CO2 laser be the best for doing something like this? Would a diode laser be perfectly adequate?
Hi, CO2 lasers are generally larger and more powerful machines than diode lasers, but they also cost more too. It all depends on your budget and what size you want to do too really, Diodes are also a lot slower than CO2 lasers as they are not as powerful, But you can cut woods with them, It just takes longer. Hope this helps, Thanks Gav
Very nice gathering of example art work. "Hits the spot" for me as I am looking for a nice/style to focus on. In your research, have you found a way to gather more in-depth statistics on number of individual piece sales? I am curious as to for a middle-range price, say $200, which type of items are "best-sellers". This past Christmas, I built 15 layered card stock pieces for family. All were not my design, but each received a lot of smiles and kudos. Many thanks for all the content you provide. I am an xTool S1 owner and appreciate the videos on XCS.
Hi, There are tools out there such as eRank, Everbee, Alura and EtsyHunt etc which give you some data but I don't think it uses Etsy's own full API, I think they may use some limited version to get some data so these will be your best options. Other than that you can just look at the reviews on each shop and search by the most recent and then visually see which items are selling better than others. At a guess I think maybe only 10% or less of sales leave reviews so again this would only be guesstimating! That's great that your gifts made people happy, that's what its all about 😀 and Thanks for watching!
@@ThemeXDigital Thank you for the reply and suggestions.
Great ideas here. Thanks for sharing your knowledge ☺️
Thanks for watching 😀
Thanks, as always! Your videos have been an amazing help to me. I have been working my way through your entire catalog, and I have been thinking to myself, "Gosh, I need to ask him to do a video on Boolean operations, because I never understand what's going on and why it doesn't work the way I want." You read my mind! Hey, there is one topic that would really interest me. I don't really understand when/why to use groups vs unions vs compound vectors. I would love to have a better understanding of the use-cases for each one, and how to use them properly. When I release a compound vectors, I often get a complete mess that I need to do manual clean-up on for included regions. There must be a better way. Groups frustrate me. I sometimes need to group some text with grouped graphics in order to center them, but then I ungroup to edit the text and the graphics are completely ungrouped as well. Is there a way to group groups and have them still retain their original identities? Maybe I should have made the graphics a compound vector instead of a group. I would love to understand this stuff better. Selecting elements can be frustrating for me. I will often select the wrong thing. A quick video with tips on how to select just what you want to select within a complex design would be fabulous. There are a TON of "Beginner's Guide to XCS" but very few covering the more advanced topics. I'm somewhat new (about 6 months), and I have a Lightburn license but I have never used it (it kinda intimidates me). I find that XCS can do a lot, and with the help of your videos I can hopefully avoid Lightburn entirely. But that would also be an interesting video: What does Lightburn do better than XCS, or what can it do that XCS cannot do? You mentioned in one video that Lightburn had a better scissors tool, but I didn't understand why you said that or if there is actually a use-case that would justify the hassle of using Lightburn or just put up with XCS? I know there is one feature I would really like to see in XCS that may someday force me to learn Lightburn: the Variable Text feature. I do a LOT of custom name engraving, and it would be FABULOUS if XCS could read a flippin CSV file so I could just batch 16 personalized coasters or 100 luggage tags! Editing text in XCS is a pain. I often find that I can't correctly double-click, and I wind up shifting the text instead. Grrrr!!! So far I have been bearing it, but my business is growing and this will become unmanageable. Hey, a quick video on how to do this *one specific thing* in Lightburn would be great as well! I don't want a whole Lightburn tutorial; I just want to know how to do stuff in Lightburn that I can't do in XCS (or would be a lot easier in Lightburn). I can always shift SVG files back and forth and only use Lightburn when needed. Oh, another topic: How can I cut a shape in half? Or along a contour? I usually wind up making two copies of the shape/contour and doing two subtracts. What a hassle! There must be a better way. Thanks again
Ummm great, but what application are you using?
It litterally says "XTool" in the video title. He also has other videos on his channel that talk about xtool. You really didnt try that hard to find out, huh. 2025 and you can't figure out how to do some basic research.
Hi, This is for Xtool Creative Space 😀
I did see Xtool in the description, but I thought this was something else. Looks to be quite similar to inkscape. Would be interested to know what the differences are.
Hi, This is a design software for XTool laser machines whereas Inkscape is an independent standalone vector drawing software. Thanks Gav
Hi ThemeXDigital, Just thought I'd let you know in XCS 2.4.27 (maybe also earlier versions) sadly this method no longer works - I came back to this tutorial as I couldn't get my Happy Easter sign to work thats when I realised they have changed the software. At the point where you seperate the letters you now have to right click the text and "Spilt Text" (so that you can move those letters individually) and not use Weld. This then negates the need to short out letters like a's o's etc that have cutout bits which we used to "make a compound path" as they now are already joined. Then when everything is moved to be overlapping I unite as per before. Hope this makes sense and helps someone, I don't have the skills to make my own video tutorial 🙂 PS Thanks for the tutorials they have really helped me get started
Hi, Yes I did notice that and I have plans to make some new videos on the text tool and making signs etc this week, I just haven't had the time yet 😉 I'm glad you figured it out though and its great that now everything is still live text and you can make changes before converting to a path or uniting 😀 Thanks Gav
You are the best!
Thank you and thanks for watching 😀

I’ve learned a lot from that, thank you very much.
That’s great and thanks for watching 😀
It's such a great video and a very helpful channel. I learned a lot from your videos. Please make a video on kerf and how to measure it and make the boxes and groves fix exactly in place accordingly using Xtool S1 diode laser. One more request can you also show how to use bolean functions in XCS? Tysm and Keep up the good work.
Thanks for the kind words and thanks for watching, I do have a video on the Boolean functions already and I will see what I can do about making a video on the Kerf 😀
Very cool.. the last one is new to me, thanks
Thanks for watching 😀
Thanks for this. Sure will save me time when learning how to use my new laser.
That's great and thanks for watching 😀
I came back to watch part of this one again so that I could make a slotted divider for my essential oils. Looks like it should work well. Thank you for teaching me skills that I'm able to combine and use in other projects!
Hey that's great 😀 I'd also love to see what you make too. Well done and thanks for watching!
When I select offset, it doesn't give me corner style options. Is there a different way to make the bottom pointed?
Hi, I am using the latest version of XCS which is V2.4.27 which has the new Offset function, Please make sure you are using this version so you have the corner options. Or you can simply go into edit mode on the larger heart and use the handles of the bottom point and adjust it manually to make it pointed. Hope this helps, Thanks Gav 😀
After I asked the question, I checked the version I had and updated. Thanks!

Thanks that was really useful

at last I have found the update!!!! Now to try to follow along and create something.
That's great, I'd also love to see what you make even if its the same 😀
Brilliant! I have been doing inlays recently using Mandala patterns following a tutorial for laser inlays using engraving and a negative image (from Trotec Laser). This is a great way to do one of my own design as well. Altough I do like the stacked effect too. I see you're using the new XCS. For those perhaps confused by the Outline (now "Offset") options this was added in the latest release. Thanks!
That's great, I'd love to see what you create and thanks for watching 😀
Great video! I never knew what they did.
Thanks for watching 😀
Can i create in Xtool Creative Space and cut at lightburn?
Hi, Yes you can do that, You just need to export as SVG and import into Lightburn. If your unsure how to do that then I have a video on that too 😀
Great ❤
Thanks for watching 😀
Love your videos. But I have one problem that makes it impossible to follow. I do not get the function "offset" but only get "outline" and with this I can only create a outer line... Do you have some Idea how that is?
Hi, I'm sure you can do the same thing with outline, I think they have changed the name of the function. But for some reason you can't do this then I would just do the update to the newer version of XCS. Thanks Gav
@@ThemeXDigital Hi, I´m on the Current verson (v2.3.24). With outline I can only generate 1 outside line (or inside line if I go negativ) but it will not effect all the other included shapes. With this I can get to the point of having the main Layer ready, but then if I want to create the 3 "bigger layers I would have to break up the compound and do every an negative or positive outline for every shape in the Mandala... It is really strange. I also do not have the mm grid (only cm) and can not find any settings for this...
Hi, Ok if you can choose to do either outside or inside then I would do an outline of the outside shape, then the same for the inside shapes and either make them a compound shape or group and then delete the inner original shape. Then I would do the same for each other layer you want to add. You should be able to do a negative inset of all the joined compound shapes but if not then you may have to do them all separately? I can't really check now as I don't have the older version installed anymore. Or you could just do the update to the latest version of XCS?
Also the latest version that I am using for this is V2.4.27. If you go into the settings you can check for an update there.
@ Interesting it wont let me update... So maybe in a couple of days this will work for me! Anyhow thanks a lot
Gracias por compartir. Magnífico trabajo
Thanks for watching 😀
Thank you! I had asked in a group how to make part of a line cut and part of it score, but never received an answer. This explained exactly what I needed to do! I used the pen tool to trace some patterns that I made and was able to shave off 14 or more seconds processing time on each. May not seem like much, but it is a set of 13; so I am able to save 3 minutes and 41 seconds when I process the set.
That's Fantastic! Any time saved is a bonus especially around Christmas time, Plus it helps with the life of the laser too! Well done and thanks for watching 😀
Genial video instructivo de lightburn muchas gracias por tus enseñanzas
Thanks for watching 😀
Thanks heaps. Your explanations are so easy to understand 😊
Glad to help and thanks for watching 😀
I have an issue where I would like to unite them so the lines aren't engraved twice, but I'm not sure the best way to go about it. When I try to do it it deletes everything except for a couple lines which tell me I'm doing something wrong. For reference I'm trying to make a collage of flowers and stems on a Tumblr and there are some flowers I would like to give the look of being behind other flowers. Are you able to make a video on something like that?
Hi, I'm not 100% sure what you mean, Do you mean you want to unite some flowers but keep some of the lines where they overlap to score? If so then I would use the scissors tool on a duplicate copy and then place these lines over the united one. I have a separate video on the scissors tool if you need help with that? Thanks Gav
@ThemeXDigital that could probably work, I'm doing a score instead of engrave on everything and when I overlap flowers the lines just all go through so sometimes a flower looks like it's all chopped up because of the other flowers lines overlapping
I watched this despite believing I understood this completely. However, you shed some simple insights on Subtract at Overlap that helped me understand it even better. You really do a nice job on these tutorials - quick, straightforward, and immediately useful. Thanks!
Thank you and thanks for watching 😀
Muchas gracias Amigo
Thanks for watching 😀
Thank you for giving me the confidence to try the pen tool! I am not dreading it anymore - it’s actually a lot of fun!,
That's great 😀 Once you know how it works and which one to use you can make anything, and with a little practice it gets easier and easier too!
Is there a true single line font witch looks a bit like arial. It would take a lot less time to score the text
There are a few single line fonts yes, they normally come with a CAD or CAM program but most of them aren't really very nice to be honest.
Great to watch, thanks
Thanks for watching 😀
I am amazed at how simple you make this look. I have not even attempted to use the pen, but I am feeling like I can try now. Thank you so much.
Give it a try, I know you can do it 😀 I try to use the least points as possible to get the smoothest shapes as you can always add more in if needed and thanks for watching 😀
Your a AWESOME teacher, I learned so much and just Subscribed to your channel. Aloha and Mahalo 🤙🏾
Thank you and glad I could help 😀
I don't know if I am missing something , but after you create the slot on the first star, can't you just copy and paste it the rotate 180.
Hi, Yes you can with the star but I just wanted to show you how to do it on all items such as the tree where you can't just copy and paste and rotate 180. Thanks Gav
Thank you for this video it was MOST helpful! Can't wait to try it. Now I just need to figure out how to make some fonts "fatter", I have some really pretty cursive fonts that I would like to cut to put on signs and such but the details get a little too fine and "skinny". If I can figure out how to "fatten" them up I'll be in business!
Hi, Thanks for watching 😀 I do have a video planned for making fonts fatter but all you would need to do is use the outline tool and offset a little bit, then delete the inner thinner lines which you won't need. I have lots more helpful videos on my channel too. Hope this helps, Thanks Gav
@@ThemeXDigital Awesome thank you for that. I just tried it and I see how it works to make the text fatter but how do you get the inner part of the letter to stay around, such as the the loops in an l, e, or o? Sorry for so many questions but you just helped me immensely. I am so grateful for your advice.
@@ShannonAlexGrobelny Hi, Do you mean when you delete the inner parts? If so then all you would need to do is probably weld the letters then release compound to separate the parts 😀
@@ThemeXDigital Perfect! Thank you so much for all your help!
Also let me know how you get on with this technique and tell me what you make 😀 Thanks Gav.
Excellent info, thank you👍
Thanks for watching 😀 Plenty more on my channel too!
Thanks so much for sharing this information. Question and request time . . . I need to learn how to use Weld on a layered map that I've bought in as an svg. I want the weld part to create the final shape from what arrives in a rectangle form. Thanks in advance 😊
Thanks for watching and I have a video on understanding the Boolean modifiers: Unite, Subtract etc coming on Monday so this will help you understand how to weld the parts together. Thanks Gav 😀
Awesome tutorial! Thanks so much! I've always struggled with the pen tool. Much appreciated!
Thanks for watching and glad I could help 😀
Absolutely amazing. I didn't know the pen tool was so versatile. Many thanks.
Glad you liked it and thanks for watching 😀
That was an excellent explanation and has cleared so many problems up that I was having. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. As an iPad user I’m also struggling to split my projects onto different canvasses, I can’t seem to find the menu that PC users have that says copy and paste. You wouldn’t know anything about that would you? Looking forward to learning more from your other videos….. Know Expert!
Thank you and to be honest I don't think the iPad version of XCS has all the features of the desktop version so I would suggest using the desktop version if you can. I'm sure the iPad version also scales drawings on import too which can be a pain. I have just uploaded quite a few different tutorials on XCS so I'm sure there is something else that you can learn on my channel too and thanks for watching 😀
Que buena explicación amigo, para hacer dibujos en este excelente programa. Gracias por compartir tus conocimientos muy valiosos

This makes me so "happy"! Last week, I made a project that I had to first score everywhere I was going to cut because I didn't know how to make it where part of the line could be scored while the rest would be cut. Thank you, thank you, thank you so very much!
