SANDON RIVER CANOE CAMPING | Smashed by Midges
Weekend started off great with excellent fishing leading to a superb lunch. Unfortunately the Midges drove me out of my camp and with no where to buy insect repellent I was forced to camp in a Pub! Brilliant fishing and a great feed and sleep made for a great weekend.

Really enjoying tarp camping, even in the depth of winter. The smaller Hootchie Tarp is just big enough to keep off light rain, but, I wouldn’t use for rougher weather. Enjoying these Paul, found a bit later. The solo canoe camp fish vids are what I’m after. Vid length is good, and enjoy the full story. A lost catch, a missed bite and a beer by the fire. Keep up the good work!
Hey thanks for the feedback and for watching!
Bloody awesome mate. You need permits to fish there?
Hello again, no permit required to fish the Brisbane river. I have one that covers the impoundments just in case. Cheers
Cheers from Olympia Wa USA
Hey thanks for watching, great to have so many US viewers.
hey mate, where did you access the creek, its a great spot all along there but I seem to find it hard to get into the more remote parts of the creek.. cheers, great vid too..love it
I paddled in via the lake and paddled upstream. Cheers Paul
if you follow that camp site up towards the left there is a beautiful grass area where you can also camp. the left of that campsite there is a dried up rocky creek, follow that all the way up (a lot of boulder hopping) and there is a few waterholes depending if has rained recently but at the ed is a beautiful water hole with a little waterfall. if you decide to keep going there is an amazing water fall a the end. we have explored a few of these and there is always some amazing crystal clear water holes and waterfalls.
Hi Pablo, I need to get back there as a few people have mentioned waterfalls. Thanks for watching!
I’m so glad you put this video out and i found it. 🎉because i too am a side sleeper and dont really have a good sleep system yet. I so need one! Thank you so so much !!.
Glad you found it Scott, I hope you get your system so. Cheers Paul
Great comparison
Thank you
Hi. I'm not sure if I've missed it, but what is the make of the canoe you use?
Hi Richard, it’s a One Tree Canoe from Australia. Thanks for watching.
Just picked up the Firebox G2 and the 16mm billy pot. Your video and channel came across my feeds. Great review and I’ve subbed to your channel. 👍
Thank you for subscribing! Regards Paul
I like the Firebox stoves. I have the G5 in titanium along with the Nano Gen 2 in titanium. Started with the Nano Gen 2 in stainless then switched to titanium since it cools down quickly. The choice of fuels in either is numerous and the light weight along with the versatility of them a person can not go wrong with a Firebox stove.
Hey thanks for watching, great to have another devotee.
Nice. 2 great eating fish and a nice parmie as well. Got back from our week in the Big Desert in Vic. a couple of weeks back and had a good trip. Thanks for the video.
Thanks my friend, glad to hear your trip went well. Cheers Paul
Great to see you back in the canoe.
Thanks Ian
Why do you use a aluminium paddle sometimes and other times a timber paddle????
So the aluminium is for shallow water where there is a chance I will strike rocks or the bottom. The timber paddle is quite fine at the tip and would easily be damaged. Thanks for watching. Cheers Paul
Great to see you back in the canoe! A beautiful part of the world.
Cheers Eddie
Bugger, good call to bail on the camping you would have been driven crazy as the wind dropped and the sun started going down. Great to see you on the water again.
Cheers, must admit the pub meal was pretty good, but the fishing was even better
Good to see the canoe back out Paul. Shame about the midges. The little buggers can drive you crazy. It was nice to see you back on the water.
Cheers Ken
@JonasRosenven correct, I already had hundreds of bites on my hands and arms. Thanks for watching. Regards Paul
Well done for saving the turtle, he was pretty keen to get to safety.
Yeah cheers, he was pretty happy
I realize this video is 2 years old but I wanted to share my canoes story. It is 1978 and my parents buy a camping trailer on a permanent spot that has a man made stream. They buy me a 13ft Grumman Aluminum canoe. I am 9 years old. It was sold to them as safe since it floats full of water and is not particularly easy to flip, perfect for a kid. My friends and I spent many happy hours paddling and flipping the canoe. Fast forward and my kids learn to flip and paddle the same canoe. My son and his grandpa fill it full of water and frogs (no frogs were ever hurt and all released). Now fast forward again and my grandkids have flipped and paddled my canoe which is now named Memories. I have another much lighter wood and canvas canoe and have an inflatable kayak. But my favorite will always be Memories. My parents are gone now, but I have memories of them buying her for me and riding in her with me. So many friends and dogs. So much family, so many Memories. And that is how I came to own a canoe.
What a great lifetime with a canoe for you and your family. So many great memories. Thanks for sharing. Regards Paul
Mate that second Bass would have been size, need to measure before you let them go. Great video.
Yeah spot on, I’ve watched this back a couple of times and you’re right. Next time! Thanks for watching. Regards Paul
Great info my friend! Thanks for sharing😎
Thanks Herb, cheers Paul
Good info. Quick tip for your dual pillow system... Contact Sea to Summit Australia, and request a replacement set of Pillow Lock patches (they will send them out free of charge), and you can then attach them to your lower pillow. 👍🏻
Good call! Thanks for watching, cheers Paul
Some good ideas ther Paul. I feel sorry for the poor little kid who had his jumper stolen😂. One question. Do you think that folding your mat will create weak points on the fold lines? I just picked up an exped ultra 3r in the hope that it is quieter than some of the others.it was supposed to be having its debut this weekend but the weather down this way put paid to that. Hence I’m watching some TH-cam stuff.
Hi Ken, Hahaha, not children were hurt in the acquisition of the jumper. I don’t think there will be any pinches as the mat is pretty flexible, but time will tell. Yeah stuck home myself this weekend, blowing a gale. Cheers Paul
Cool funny enough I have two mattresses at the same level. Lighter thinner when U have to travel light and a thicker more comfortable when U can handle the extra size weight. Funny thing is I rarely take the thing one .... Must be getting old. Great informative short vid. Well done.
Yeah hard to go past a comfortable mat!
Hi mate good video but I've got a better cheaper solution to two pillows and a fluffy cover. Go to Bunnings and buy a bag of cement and take a small bottle of cement with U every time U go camping. Mix it into your cup of tea at night take just one pillow to bed and harden the f..... Up! 😂
Okay…. Some of us don’t camp in caravan parks on our trips…
How do you go about cleaning your down sleeping bag?
Key is to keep it as clean as possible. So I sleep in thin fleece pants and tee shirt and usually socks. So the inside stays clean. If I get dirt on the outside I just wipe it off with a clean damp cloth. Once a year I will wash it and re- treat the water proof coating. Thanks for watching, regards Paul
what no Vegemite. in a Australian MRE.???
I know right! What the hell, turns out it’s not official army which explains. Cheers Paul
No Crocs where you are?
No Barry, they’re about 2,000 km’s north of here. Thanks for watching. Regards Paul
Hey what’s the fire starter you’re using to make fires?
It’s called Jute, you can get it at hardware stores. I got mine from an old cat scratching post.
Good video thanks. Have you watched Gido's fishing adventures? Solo rock fishing - whoa.... www.youtube.com/@gidosfishingadventures
Oh my. What an absolutely beautiful place to be 18:11 God Bless this world!
He certainly did!
Nothing compares to a self caught fish and then eating it. My first fish I caught when I was 13, was a whiting. My parents prepared it and cooked it up just for me. Best fish I have ever tasted. I can still remember the flavours of it 25 years later. We went to a fish and chip shop a week later and I got Whiting. It just did not taste the same, it was honestly a dissapointment. I am not sure it was actually whiting at the F&C shop, but it was hardly the same. No flavour, no flakey melt in your mouth white flesh. Just bland.
Yes Whiting are the best of the ‘bread and butter’ species in Australia.
Nice one Paul. I had the sound off so as not to annoy the grandkids so you may have mentioned it but is that South from Angourie? It’s a cracking part of the world.
Hi Ken yes it is, a great hike. Take care, Paul
This one is better than the last one! Nice edit
Haha, yes I had more time to tweak it. Cheers Paul
Did not know you could make a coffee with a rechargeable battery set up. Brilliant simply brilliant. Pods and ground coffee as well I'll have a look at the link in the description
Also makes a great present. Thanks for watching.
What a ripper little product think I'll buy one. Thanks for sharing
Pleasure, enjoy your coffee ☕️
Looks like a pretty trick bit of gear. Unfortunately I'm a Coffee hack and just use instant but I shall remember it and mention it to others if we get to talking about such things. On a different not I noticed you wearing a pair of long cargo pants in one of your earlier videos. I'm wondering what brand they are and what you think of them. I will be getting a pair for camping at some point but don't know a whole lot about them tbh.
Ah another old bloke like me. The pants are FXD workwear pants for Tradies. So super tough and pretty comfortable. Well worth a look. Thanks for watching. Regards Paul
@@Getgowin Thanks for the reply mate. Looks like we have a stockist locally so I shall check them out. Just picked up some more supplies for our upcoming Desert trip. I reckon Scotch Fillet with some Beer or maybe a nice red next to the campfire under the stars sounds half decent. The kids gave me a Darche firepit for my birthday so might give that a go for cooking. Cheers.
Geez, I’m thinking the bottle of Red might be the go with quality steak. Fire pit will come in handy. Trip is really starting to shape up. Let me know if you post any pics on Facebook or anywhere else.
@@Getgowin Yeah getting there. I was hoping a mate was coming and let's just say he works in a very handy place in terms of great quality wines. Unfortunately it looks like he can't make it but we will muddle through somehow. Other than this I really don't do social media but my wife has a facebook account so maybe I could share some photos somehow.
Yeah nice that is so good damed convenient
Yes mine will get a thorough workout!
Brilliant idea, it’s on the shopping list for my next trip
Yeah allow 10 days for delivery. I hope you enjoy your coffee!
I like swift and might be buying a 16ft prospector or kewaydon, but the way they showed the paddles to flex seemed excessive. So there's this guy Fishell paddles. 120$ ottertail, and with a little luck, he didn't whittle on it until 15% of your effort goes into flexing the paddle instead of moving the boat forward.
Spot on Michael, any flex is just wasted energy. Thanks for watching. Regards Paul
Great review! I have the 5" Firebox and the Nano. I mostly use a Trangia in the Nano for quick cooks like coffee, tea, or boiling water for a dehydrated meal. I also have an Esbit stove I bought in Germany when I was in the Army 30 yrs ago. I pulled it out a while back and it still had a box of tablets in it and a book of MRE matches tucked inside the box. Just for fun, I set it up and lit a 30 yr old tablet with a 30 yrs old match and heated up a cup of water for some tea. It all worked perfectly. I was surprised the matches were still good, since the storage hasn't always been humidity free. Your little multi-fuel stove is really nice. I'd like to get one for myself, eventually. Pathfinder was making one, but they didn't make it for long. I don't know if there was something wrong with it, or maybe sales weren't what they expected and discontinued it. I am going to e-mail Firebox Stoves and see if Steve will "invent" a multi-fuel burner that can be used in the Firebox stoves.
Hey thanks for watching. How cool is the Esbit stove! Still good after 30 years. Great idea to have Steve make a multi fuel stove for the Firebox. The Nano is my next buy for hiking. Cheers Paul
I've had my poly old town saranac for about 12 years now and I cannot tell that it has degraded. It was about 500 us dollars, new at the time. That's less than $50 a year to own, hey.... I'll buy another one when I need to.
Yeah good call, they’re a solid canoe. Thanks for watching.
I own the O.G Firebox, the Nano and the Scout. They are all rock-solid products. I also have some of the optional accessories, too.
Hey thanks for watching. I also want to get the Nano for hiking, brilliant bit of kit. Cheers Paul
Hey mate thanks for sharing, I’m keen to get out and use the tarp myself. Where is this located? 😁
It’s a hike called Steamers, it’s outside Warwick in QLD
Thanks mate. I will have to check it out 😊
I have a couple of different camp chairs; the Trekology like you have and a Klymit "Ridgeline" (?). The latter is more robust, has a taller back, a bit heavier, and costs over twice as much as the Trekology. But I'm pushing 210lbs/98kg and I prefer the Klymit. That said, if I was tripping solo I would take the Trekology as every bit of weight loss helps.
I would like a longer back on my chair, I just have to wait for this one to wear out! Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. We are from Brazil and just started making content but we wanted a way to get on the water and go camping/expeditioning. And you helped us to choose a fiberglass canoe. We ordered the smallest tandem canoe we could find which was a 14 footer. And we are also going to be cartopping on our old VW bug
Thanks! So let me get this right, VW Bug, Canoe on top heading out for adventures. Sounds awesome, let me know the name of your channel, I’d love to follow along. Cheers Paul
@@Getgowin it's this channel right here!! I've got the canoe and have already put 150km rowing on it, it's a blast, in 3 weeks I will have a video up where I go canoe camping
@coupledreams looking forward to watching it!
Thanks Paul, good that you tried the commercial meal, I still reckon you can't beat the good old dehydrated spag bol 🤣👍
Spot on Shaun, I this would be the only option that would be edible. Cheers Paul
Good video! Two point tie down on car is never a good idea.
Thanks, it’s never been an issue for my small light canoe. Thanks for watching.
When you were in this area three years ago did you do a video? If so what was it called?
Yes I did, it’s called Emu Creek, brilliant camp spot. Cheers
The scenery with the bird calls in the background was amazing. I agree on the dehydrated meals, only marginally better than starving.
Thanks Leah, I will have to try some other dehydrated meals, surely there must be some better options out there. Cheers Paul
@@Getgowin Back Country is the best one I have tasted so far but I still only use them as a back up.
Good idea
