    Congrats on finishing one year of medical school. You and I are very similar I love learning and also felt frustrated that they didn't go into more detail on the pathophysiology in nursing school. It makes learning soooo much easier.

    I am in nursing school now, planning on med school in a couple years, and I feel like you are literally speaking my thoughts. Everything you touched on in this video I agree with 100%. I even had the exact same experience with dysrhythmias and MI! It has been my suspicion that the culture in med school is different from nursing school but it's hard to compare until you've done both. Thank you for your thoughtful, articulate, and POSITIVE speech!

      I've never understood why people intent on going to medical school choose nursing school first. Seems like a lot more hassle than just going directly to medicine. Is there some insight i am missing?

      Chris R But you just don't go directly into medicine you still need a four year undergrad degree. So why not nursing?

    Hi! My name is Joelle and I'm a new nurse. I've been working for almost 4 months now and I always had the idea of going to medical school in the back of my mind for a while. Now that I'm working and seeing what the doctors do I'm seriously considering going to med school, but I have no idea where to start.
    BTW, congratulations on being and nurse and becoming a doctor! So cool! 😄

    Thank you so much for sharing. Your video was very interesting to watch. I can't stop listening lol. I'm in my last semester of nursing school and I feel the exact same way. My clinical instructor says that a lot to us, "you're in last semester. You should know that" (whatever question she asked and we don't know the answer to). And most of us always feel so nervous and worried going to clinical every week because she's so intimidating lol.. she would ask us questions and if we don't know, she makes it feel like the dooms day and makes me feel like "am I gonna pass clinical?"
    So much anxiety lol luckily it's only 15 weeks. I hope that when I get to med school I'd have the same experience you did. It would make such a conducive learning environment. Thanks again for sharing!

    Salam dear Maryam, funny to see another Iranian thinking about the same thing as I do!
    I'm still in Nursing School (finished my first semester last week :D) but I'm also thinking about maybe I should go and study in Medical School instead... I might consider that after I've finshed Nursing School and maybe worked a few years. As there're follow-ups to Nursing that, as you say, gives higher pays and could still be a really great path to go.
    The only issue and obstacle I see at the moment, is that my grades from High School is not enough (both courses missing for the requisites and also all-too-low grades to be accepted in the first place) and that I would need to retake some of them to be able to go the Medical School path.
    Ahh, and also, I'm not sure if I want to study 12+ years and be in my late 30s before I even start working (I'm 25 now) >_<
    Anyways, thanks for posting this video Maryam and I'm glad to see another Iranian here on TH-cam talking about a subject which interest me a lot!
    PS: Your Instagram-account seems to be removed/deleted(?), because I couldn't add you!
    Have a great day and I hope to see more videos from you in the future (subscribed! :P)
    Sincerely,
    Vesal

    I’m a senior in a 3 year nursing program and my experiences (so far) have a been similar to what you’ve explained in this video. However, I do feel the lack of comradery you mentioned for med school resonates with the BSN program that I’m in and it’s probably one of the most discouraging things I’ve experienced coming into this profession. I also feel the same way the clinical setting (with the exception of ED and Psych hospital); some of the nurses don’t have each other’s backs (especially in med-surg) and a lot of them can be cold toward nursing students.

    Thank you for sharing your experiences. I think the professors and clinical instructors were some of the best. Yet, there were definitive lines of performing well or not. I wonder if this is r/t the short time before nurses can practice somewhat independently. What are your thoughts on why this might be? Thank you!

    In terms of studying, do you feel it's a drastic difference in how much time you spend studying now vs. back when you were going through nursing school? I'm in ADN program now for Nursing and I feel like I'm studying all the time to keep up. Just curious if Med school is 10x harder in terms of studying?

      Mary Ann Mor I don’t think they teach like that. This is why rumors are harmful. Professors are trying to help you with how people treat you and you should treat them. You can’t be soft but not too tough either. You have to know how to communicate. You need empathy. Challenges are put in our lives to see if what we really want we need to fight for it. The real world is worse.

    hi, did you do any research before applying for medical school and if so how long was it? Also in your opinion was nursing or medical school harder? Thank you for your time

    • @23magneta
      @23magneta 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Medical school is 4 years long. Sometime during your 4th year of medical school, you have to apply to different residency programs and go to interviews. Residency programs give you the opportunity to practice medicine under the supervision of an experienced doctor. Basically, you learn how to be a doctor and will become fully independent by the end of the program. The length of a residency program depends on the specialty. Family medicine has a short residency of 3 years whereas surgical residencies are 5+ years.
      I attended only nursing school, but I have many friends who went through medical school. Basically, they are very different and they are very difficult in different ways.
      --NURSING vs MEDICAL SCHOOL--
      1. This is an undergraduate degree so you are given more guidance compared to medical school since many students are in college for the first time whereas medical school is a post-graduate school in which students already have a college degree.
      2. Nursing students begin their clinical courses usually during the second semester of the first year or by the first semester of the 2nd year depending on the school. These clinical courses can range from 4hrs to 10hrs a day once or twice a week for one clinical course. You are usually taking at least 2 clinical courses a week. They also must juggle lecture-type courses simultaneously. Exams are constant (there are usually 3 per week). They have to conduct research, write many long papers and give presentations. In addition, they have to work and complete extracurricular activities. As you can see, this can make nursing school quite stressful. It's like being in a pressure cooker at all times. One of my exams covered 500 pages of material! The school will not hesitate to kick you out of the program if you are merely one percentage point below passing, which can range from 75-80% depending on the difficulty of school.
      3. In medical school, you are in the classroom during your first two years where you learn basic science. You have science labs for some of your courses, but you typically don't have to worry about juggling clinical courses along with your theory courses. Your clinical years are reserved for years 3 and 4. At the end of your 2nd year, you have to complete the STEP 1 exam, which tests you on your science knowledge. Your score on this exam will determine which medical specialties will be available to you. In medical school, your board exam is divided into 3 steps: step 1(science knowledge exam taken after year 2), step 2 (clinical knowledge exam taken between years 3 and 4) and step 3 (general medicine exam taken during residency). In contrast, nursing school graduates take one board exam after completing nursing school. If you pass, then you are licensed to practice nursing.
      Medical school students also normally don't have jobs. Their only job is to study, which is a big enough job already! The amount of information you have to learn is more than nursing school (as it should be). It's like drinking from a fire hose. Unlike nursing school, it's pretty hard to be kicked out of medical school. When a school accepts you, then they will work hard within reason to give you the support you need to pass. This doesn't mean they will dumb down the curriculum. It just means they allow you to make mistakes and are more forgiving than nursing school in which one mistake could end your nursing career altogether.
      Long story short: medical school and nursing school are incredibly difficult in different ways. Do not embark on either type of schooling unless you have a lot of determination, can handle extreme pressure and have excellent study skills.

    I am a student nurse and wont be a qualified RN until 2020, I have thought for a long time that I wont ultimately be satisfied with nursing. Similarly to you, I love to investigate, solve problems know more, l don't think I will be happy with merely solving the small problems resulting from a larger one ie the medical diagnosis. a few of my nursing instructors have told me that I might be good as a doctor, and that I seem to be on a higher deeper level of thinking than many of my class mates, and that that could pose a risk to my nursing career if I choose to follow it. I often feel very much out of place in nursing school, though I have a passion for medicine, taking care of others, and as long as I can remember I've never wanted to work in anywhere other than healthcare, I feel like i have wanted to become a doctor since I was at the end of high school, I was just never in a position to go to medical school right out of high school and thus went to study nursing. To me and on the face of it, Flowing in my dream of medicine feels like a cop out. I feel as though I may be studying nursing for the wrong reasons. I have spent a lot of time thinking through why I wanted to become a doctor and the pros and cons. Its driving me crazy. I wanted to ask you, what you think I should do? I have been trying to get an appointment with one of my best and most trusted teachers to discuss things with her, I've tried to meet with another nurse who is a friend of mine but they are both too busy. I need to reach out to someone who might know what to say. I think you might know what to say. I apologist for taking up the comments section with my life story, and with these trivial questions. This dilemma is driving my crazy and I'm hoping that you can help.
    Thank you for your time.

    • @GeorgiaMaeHowe
      @GeorgiaMaeHowe 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I know, or they get defensive and try to make you feel bad. I never tell people I'm thinking about med school after I finish nursing school for the same reasons. I think some nurses don't like to hear that sentiment because they interpret it to mean that you don't think nursing is good enough, which they resent. But don't worry about that. Nursing might be a great fit for them but not for you, and there's no value judgment necessary. I'm surprised it's not much more common for nurses to pursue medicine, it seems like such a natural progression. Not hypocritical at all.

    I’m so confused why people say always wanted to be docs . Then why do they waste time going to RN and just go directly you know what I mean. I am so confused I think. But I also understand that yes, we get so curious because physicians are scientists and as a scientist you want to go deeper. A nurse is more holistic and therapeutic. They are supposed to be more interpersonal even though doctor is more scientist. I would love to be a physician but also the money and support is needed. Is hard to be a physician, some people do have the luck you know. So for some people nursing is the best =)
    So good for you then!

    What she is talking about is so subjective. She's only talking about her personal experiences from her own time at nursing and med school. What she is saying is not applicable to everyone at all. She's saying all sorts of bad things about nursing just from the experience she personally had from her school. Not every nursing school is gonna have mean teachers and not every med school is gonna simply say "oh it's okay..'" every time a med student kills a mannequin. There is very little applicability and value is what she is saying. She in making nursing school sound like a bad place. Most of them are not.
