  • Hi everyone! I've been getting a lot of questions lately from high school students and college graduates interested in pursuing medicine. It would be great to get a dialog going. I (and many others) would be very interested to hear your journey towards medicine. And maybe any tips you've learned along the way.
    Thank you all for watching!

    omg i decided on med school at 28 and had to start from scratch, being an art major, there are many many pathways!

      grubbymanz how is your path towards medicine going?

      going well, currently at the end of my second year of med school, crunch time for shelf exams and prep for step 1. Other than now, has been a pretty low stress and interesting ride.

      grubbymanz you were 28 when you applied to med school?

    • @grubbymanz3928
      @grubbymanz3928 7 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      no, I was 28 when I decided to go into medicine, I started a post-bacc that year and I think applied at 30 after I finished. I didn't study any science in undergrad so had to do all the prereq. classes. It's not that uncommon, there are maybe 15 people older than me in my class, and at least 30 ppl around 27-30 age.

      Thank you so much for saying this! I'm currently finishing my BA in Communications and have been playing with the idea of going to Medical School. My GPA is far from Medical School acceptance - when you took your post bac classes, is that what your Med School weighed most?

    I really love watching videos related to Med School! I want to become a doctor since I'm 17, I'm 23 now, and now I finally have the chance to graduate from High School because I got sick before. Your videos really inspire me and push me forward. While watching this video, I drew something for my Biology class. :) Could call it relaxing! Your videos and the videos from TheStriveToFit are my favorites.

    I needed this. Thanks a lot! I'm a med student in Moscow, Russia currently in my 5th year and I know that I'm not exercising my full potentials being here. The standard of med education here in Russia has exponentially decreased over the years and it makes me very nervous that I'll graduate a "half baked doctor". Last month, I finally decided to start studying for the USMLE Steps (after procrastinating for 2 years) and this morning, I decided that I also want to sit for the MCAT exam and start my med school journey all over from scratch. I've been up since the wee hours of the morning scouring the net and TH-cam for all the info I can get on how to proceed with this in terms of eligibility, requirements, registration, best study materials etc and stumbling upon your video has given me a boost of confidence.
    Med school here is 6 years and I'm in my early 20s given that I'm in my penultimate year. Hearing you say that you took a gap year and eventually got accepted into med school at 24 was really encouraging and made me not feel that I'll be an "old applicant" by the time i apply to US med schools. So, Thanks a lot for your refreshing honesty and transparency. Best of luck with everything!

      Thank you so much for watching. I know several physicians who have come to practice in the states. I am unsure of their exact process but I believe they only have to pass the board exam and attend residency (3-5 years depending on speciality) instead of attending 4 years medical school again. I wish you the best of luck on your medical journey.

    Here I come to bombard with questions lol! 1! Was it a hard choice for you to decide that taking a gap year would be best? 2! How many medical school accepted you? And 3 (if you don't mind answering this of course) what was your GPA upon graduating?

    • @drjennale
      @drjennale  8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      1. A lot of people take gap years before medical school. I was not a hard decision for me a lot. And if I had to do it again, I would still take a gap year. I have the rest of my life to be a doctor.
      2. Two schools accepted me
      3. 3.6 (granted I did have a dance minor so that boosted my GPA a bit)

      Simplest question to ask yourself is... do you want to be the boss (doctor) or do you want to work under someone (PA)? Other things to consider are can you live off student loans for 4 years and make garbage as an resident (doctor) or do you want to make 100k+ in just 3-4 years (PA)? Do you want to spend your life just doing "one thing" (doctor) or switch specialities whenever you want (PA)?
      For me it was simple, I want to be the boss.

    Hi, greetings from Slovakia!(not really visible state on map somewhere in the middle of Europe) 😊
    I’m currently in my third year of medical school and aspiring to go to USA as IMG (if everything goes well).
    In your channel I always find motovation and many times I regain my own passion for medicine when I see you so honestly passionate about what you do (in dark places of examination period it literally saves me 😅). I also really enjoy vlogs of every day real family life mommy - doctor -badass. It is inspiring and I learn from it a big deal as well. :)
    But I hope you could do some videos about your background-moving for college or give some tips for IMGs if you have an idea what could help us for successful USMLE steps, electives-rotations-hands on experience and matching, maybe also moving abroad for pursuing medicine.
    Another great topic would be case studies in a way “what I learned by practicing medicine”
    Anyway.. thank you for the amazing content and inspiration! Bless you! 😊

    Hey thanks for this video!!!! Honestly I'm starting my junior year now this fall and... I'm going to start taking pre read now because I just made up my mind. I have a lot of community service, volunteering, I'm about to go to a mission trip, and I might give it a try to the SMDEP program! The only thing is I previously was interested in dental school but idk why my heart is calling medicine! And idk if is wrong that I'm scare, I'm scare to not be good enough for med school. I like that you said, everyone is different and we all get there in die rent ways. At this point I'm about to start shadowing both professions to see if Medicine wins over Dentistry , if it does i will do all it takes to get there!! Also can you make a video of being a female and being a doctor or being in med school??! I would love that also. Thanks for your time and nice encouraging videos !!! 😊

      know that you're not alone. A lot of students are confused and they're not 100% certain which path they want to take (at least that was the case for me). As long as I was taking steps forward, learning, and forging new bonds - I saw those as accomplishments.

      When I went to Vietnam, we set up clinics. There are different specialities - internal medicine, family medicine, cardiology, pediatrics, OBGYN, optometry, dentistry, and pharmacy. Depending on which speciality you work in that day, you do different things. In OBGYN I did PAP smears and LEEP procedures. All the others, I was a Jr doctor and got history and physical exam.

    Hi, super helpful video first of all, it's rare to see med school students giving personal advice!
    I have a couple of questions for you:
    1. How would you suggest finding those connections to start shadowing a physician/getting into a research lab if our network isn't super established yet?
    2. Would you say the clinical care extender program is beneficial/necessary? For my campus, the closest CCE program is an hour commute away, and I don't have a car, so I'm trying to see whether or not the trouble of getting there is worth it, vs just volunteering at a homeless clinic.
    3. Any tips for an incoming 3rd year who's trying to get their stuff together and their gpa higher?

    • @drjennale
      @drjennale  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. google, and send emails. My friends have sent over 50 emails to find lab positions. You just have to want it enough and put in the work to research.
      2. CCE is not necessary - it was just my avenue to getting volunteer experience. As long as you're volunteering - it does not have to be through CCE.
      3. As you friends what courses are interesting. There are some bio classes that are easier than other and known as "BIO GPA Boosters" You would have to ask people who have taken the course before at your school.

    what was your undergrad GPA if you don't mind me asking , I really want to go to med school but I'm at my junior year and have a 3.2 so I'm scared I'm just gonna waste my time applying and should just do PA.

    • @Jesslivelifeoriginal
      @Jesslivelifeoriginal 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      If being a physician is really what you want to do, then go for it! apply BOTH DO and MD when the time comes. Take a gap year if it will help you improve your application. And you still have junior and senior year to bring up your GPA. Being a PA is great, but it that's not what you really want to do, then don't settle for it.

    • @lamingtongirl123
      @lamingtongirl123 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You are not competitive enough for an allopathic med school. You must have a 3.7 and above and a 38 MCAT to be competitive enough to matriculate into a respectable med school.

    • @Jesslivelifeoriginal
      @Jesslivelifeoriginal 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      (To Kimberly Salazar) Please refer to my original comment. Do the best with what you have, be the best applicant you can be (and apply broadly to both DO & MD), and don't worry so much about circumstances you can't control. Good luck on your journey! :)

    Congratulations to your new subscriber count; you deserve it :D I have such a burning question and I am not so sure if you answered it or not, and I also understand if you do not get around to it. I will be attending and undergrad college in a couple weeks as a freshie. I was wondering if you have seen any surgeons or doctors who are able to have enough free time for their hobbies. I want to pursue a medical career but I always feel discouraged because there are others I also want to do in life.

    Can you do a video explaining the difference between MD and DO? I'm from Canada and have NEVER heard of a DO.... do you have the same practicing privileges? I have never seen a DO student on the wards ever or even heard of their existence. Is it like being a naturopath? Is it competitive? Can you apply for the same residencies/fellowships as MDs? And if so, how successful are DOs in getting spots?

      Everyone gets burnt out from time to time. There were days were I just felt so tired and wondered if I was good enough. The key to understand is that it is ok to step back and relax. You are right, you have a long road ahead - but its a marathon, not a race. Enjoy the journey, learn from your mistakes, and just keep pushing forward. Focus on the things you can change.

    Hi! Your situation during undergrad and afterwards sounds so similar to mine! I applied this last cycle with too low of an MCAT score (got 2 interviews but didn't get in) so I'm studying my ass off and retaking it! I work with a lot of DOs and it seems like a good option for me as I didn't apply to DO schools last time. Do you like saying something about your expertise in DO school? I know it's basically the same as MD except you get to learn the osteopathic manipulation stuff
