    As a guitarist bassist and vocalist, this band and its members stand as one of my biggest inspirations. In some songs Die and Kaouru trade parts in rhythm lines to create one riff that bounces in a unique way. Also from what I have seen Kaouru plays one seven-string all night in shows whilst Die changes guitars and tunings, meaning that Kaouru transposes everything and doesn't opt for easy open strings in places, but I'm not sure if I'm just missing his changes there. Toshiya is just a stand-out bass player in every way, from his unique percussive playing to his use of runs, melody, lines, and even solos. It's my belief that Japan has more exceptional bass players per person than any other. Other notable players are from the band's Band Maid, the Gazette and Babymetal. And finally for vocals....well do i even need to say why Kyo is an inspiration..

      I love The Bassist even more with his back up screem voice for many of their song.

    Vocals - Kyo
    Guitar - Kaoru (band leader)
    Guitar - Die (also acoustic)
    Bass - Toshiya
    Drums - Shinya
    They made a point in their early days that they have two guitars, not lead and rhythm. Diru’s recent stuff is very cohesive. If you want to hear more of their individuality you need to go back to their early days but be prepared, the music is WAY different. ~Queenie, your violist ;)

    This is absolutely a song where Kyo is the focus. That being said the band did go thru a phase where they didn’t employ guitar solos, at least not in a traditional sense. There would be some lead work to help color the songs, but it wouldn’t necessarily be featuring one of the guitarists (the other guitarist is Kaoru by the way).
    If you do any more Dir en grey try and focus on Toshiya, the bassist. I’m sure being a bass player you’ll appreciate what he does. You rarely get a basic foundation out of him, often times he’s provided another melody underneath the guitars.
    Happy you liked the song. Some people have a hard time grasping the band and think it’s “weird” just based on the language alone.

      Man it was Toshiya's bass in Cage and raison d'etre that made me first fall in love with the band! Bloody amazing.

    What I love about Dir En Grey is that you can see and hear how deeply all of the members feel their songs, all of them playing and singing with everything they have. The raw visceral intensity and serene beauty of their music performed as true art is just captivating. Also there are plenty of songs with guitar and drum and bass solos. Each member is super talented and versatile.

    I've always said that Vinushka is where the band decided to whip out Kyo's range and beat you over the head with it - they have other songs that showcase the rest of the band far more clearly, just not this one. They've never been a solo-heavy band but it *is* there at times. I hope to see the band on the channel again sometime!!

      One or two added notes that I previously forgot - hilariously I heard Kyo before I heard Mike Patton and my first gut reaction was "hey! It's an American Kyo! Cool!!"
      Also - it's probably been said but you were right, this wasn't remotely the top of Kyo's range.

    I'm a year late but i really, really enjoyed watching you react to one of my fave bands of all time. i love when a person can appreciate how different dir en grey is! Also, its very hard not to pay attention to kyo, it's been said time and time again that he's basically an instrument himself! It's hard not to tune into the front man as it is, but when it's kyo? Man, insane shit.

    One of my favorite bands of all time. I've been listening to them since I was a teen, they're a very unique band, not afraid of changes(visually and musically). Throughout the years they had many different stages and changes to their style of music but the roots are always there. Yeah, this song is long but they have songs twice as long as this, which can put some people off. Their songs feel long but don't feel bad or anything close to it, like you said about this song. Kyo is my favorite Japanese metal singer and on my top list of metal vocalists. He sings with such emotion, anger and elegance at the same time, and always with tremendous power on his voice.

    Funny story tho, I'm having a hard time learning the drums in this song, while it only took me 2 days to learn through the fire and the flames. It was back in 2010 and Shinya got me writing stuff in a paper for some fills and off-beat. Just kinda funny that the difficulty isn't apparent.

    Definitely a piece that is cohesive and has the instruments supporting Kyo's powerhouse vocals. There's lots of other songs that let this member or that shine, and plenty like this one. That's one of the things I love about Diru, they're very versatile. Looking forward to more!

      They are active as a band since 97, all the members are the same founders, they had a big career and a lot of albums. This song is from "Uroboros" album (2008) after that came "Dum Spiro Spero" (2011) being this two for me their best works. The production on DSS is on point, it's a proggresive/deathmetal, a lot of experimental, Kyo best era vocally talking, can't believe some notes he hits with total relaxation as a vocal myself, hard to believe some lines.

  • @yokoumiko7108
    @yokoumiko7108 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This is a song were everyone stays apart from the spot except Kyo who is very careful about the interpretation of the lyrics, it feels like he's wanting the lyrics reach the audience... Clearly they're protesting for Hiroshima and Nagasaki, that's the meaning and the intention of this song.

    • @KhajiitMoon
      @KhajiitMoon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's about the death penalty. IMO it obtusely relates to war and thus the bombings as a form of the death penalty. There's a lyric that says 13 steps to the gallows that reiterates the death penalty. The big theme is, is it right to kill for greater morality/good/prevent further violence etc. The original video links in a blog that discusses more on this, and Kaya does a phenomenal job of breaking down lyrics because stuff is often lost in translation especially with how Kyo writes

    • @yokoumiko7108
      @yokoumiko7108 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KhajiitMoon You are wrong bro, I know a little japanese and when Kyo says "koko wa shinjitsu da" it means "here is the truth" in other lines he speaks about the feeling of being disintegrated, hands that clap, people who laugh, leaders on the rise, and in the line that says "they are punishing me because I'm bad" in the video they put images of children burned by radiation, clearly the whole song is a claim for nuclear war, why do you think people in the audience is crying so much, because they are so moved and identified with the point of view of Kyo about the horrors of war that is inevitable, so don't frivolize. This song is literally how Japan feels about the holocaust.

    in a lot of dir en grey interviews they have specified that they do tend to write to compliment kyos voice but that isnt saying that there arent moments where they individually shine. this song is just kyo heavy' different sense, rinkaku and zakuro are all songs where the guitars and or drums stand out. cage is a song that has a pretty dope bass solo as well.
