Fun fact about October: Bono accidentally left the original lyrics in a taxi and lost them. He had to essentially improvise new lyrics while in the studio recording.
The way Daniel Lanois described Larry's drumming & Bono's singing is that they feed off of each other. He could get one or the other to try to take it a step further, and knew that the other would follow. That's why Bono was singing in such high registers on many of the songs that Lanois helped produce. Danny knew how to egg one on to get the other to step it up. And you can see here how that just naturally works live. U2 was built for live performances.
The song in that live performance is on the "under a blood red sky" live Album , 30 years long U2 fan here and this album is one of my favorites of them. Every song a banger with great energy. Playlist of the album: Gloria, recorded at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Colorado on June 5, 1983 11 O’Clock Tick Tock, recorded at Boston, Massachusetts on May 6, 1983 I Will Follow , recorded at the Loreley, St. Goarshausen on August 20, 1983 Party Girl , recorded at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Colorado on June 5, 1983 Sunday Bloody Sunday , recorded at the Loreley, St. Goarshausen on August 20, 1983 The Electric Co. , recorded at the Loreley, St. Goarshausen on August 20, 1983 New Year’s Day , recorded at the Loreley, St. Goarshausen on August 20, 1983 40 , recorded on the Loreley, St. Goarshausen on August 20, 1983 I would higly recomment to react to more live songs from U2 such as "I will follow", "Elevation" or the klassik live performance at live aid
From what I recall, this song is from "October." However, the album version is much more subdued (still great though). This live version is where they really let loose, the one you want if you're looking to get it for yourself.
They Played “Gloria” On The Experience + Innocence Tour back in 2018 and it is awesome. With the Precise way it hits Edges effects Rig it never sounded so good. The Edge’s Slide on it is beautiful, And as always The Rhythm section is right on point with Larry And Adam.
Originally this song is from their 2nd album "October" - for me one of their weaker ones (after the highly energetic 1st "Boy" the dreaded follow up with 'more of the same, but maybe not as memorable') Their 3rd was "War", which is a major banger (and had the first big hits with 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' and 'New Year’s Day'). And this tour (especially this concert + concert film) put them on the map big time from what I know. Full on 100% energy. The crowd in that gloomy weather, and a band completely owning the stage (and Bono even beyond that) - the video is a must have imho. Personally i like the gig at "Rockpalast" in Loreley, Germany even more - sunny weather this time, but the band feels a tiny bit even more exciting. (And like other comments have pointed out, there was a live album ("Under a Blood Red Sky") too at that time - which used songs from these both shows from what I read.) The next year they diversified a bit with atmospherical sounds on their 4th album "The Unforgettable Fire", which then lead to "Yoshua Tree"...
Thanks David. Loved the reaction. The song came off of the album October; however, this live version (in my opinion) is stronger than the studio version. U2 released a live album called "Under a Blood Red Sky", which has this version of the song. Regarding the punk feel, the band was inspired by bands like The Clash and The Ramones. Many of their earlier songs have a punk / post-punk feel to them.
dude. You made my day. One of my top 5 favorites from U2. Never seen this live performance. So glad i got to love it for the first time along with you.
This song is from their official released album "Under a blood red sky" from 1983. It's a 8 track album. This whole album has the same energy. With this album i back then felt in love for U2. Pure only for the energy. Not October which was mentioned. That is the studio version.
Ahhh, when U2 were good. 😊 You should have all the albums up until Zooropa. Some might argue up until Achtung Baby but I actually liked that album. Why do bands just completely lose it at some point? Their newer music is probably technically superior, but who cares if it leaves you cold?
Dave thank you for all the reactions to U2, I'm a U2 fan and is great to see this kind of reactions thank you you are the best, please if you react to the song I still haven´t found what I'm looking for, but from the Rattle and Hum video or Pride (in the name of love), thank you
This is from their second album "October". It's the best song on there. My least favorite album from them. However, it has a lot of interesting moments, despite most of the SONGS not being all that great. This review highlights what made U2 great during their early Steve Lillywhie era . They were never punk, but you can hear and fell the punk influences. They have always been the best at being simple/minimalistic, which can be much harder in all art-forms (fashion, film, product etc) as you are doing more with less, and everything has more impact (so every bad note, comes through just as much as vividly as the good ones. Bono's vocals are powerful, Edge's playing is clean with atmospheric and stylistic flourishes, Adam Clayton's bass is solid along with Larry Mullen Jr's driving, often military flavored drumming, each having moments in the spotlight. The youthful energy and drive in this era just oozes of a band on a mission.
October was a fantastic album from beginning to end. I never tire of listening to that album. Red Rocks was amazing, but nothing can match the greatness of the studio version, and the rest of that album.
I have a u2 song for you to react to. The song is called City of Blinding Lights. The video is from live from Chicago 2005. I actually bought the DVD. I think this is a great song opener.
Their early work to me is the best. Raw, visceral sound. I made a mix tape in 1990 of early U2 , early Cult (death cult. Southern death cult, new model army and mission uk. It was an excellent mix that I eventually wore out the tape.
This review confused me a bit. You commented how you love the song, loved the performance, the crowd interaction, the band interaction and then.... 7.3. I though it was a fair score when you first said it, and then you went on about how much you dug it. I was looking to hear more reasons why the score wasn't higher. Your reviews are usually fair, and I don't disagree with your score. I just didn't hear enough reasons why it wasn't higher.
They caught a lot of shit for it at the time, but my favorite U2 era is when they still had that evangelical zeal and energy in their music. Or it would be more accurate to say that I oscillate between that and the Unforgettable Fire - Achtung Baby era. The energy of the music from Boy to War was so good though. This comes off of their 2nd album, October. It's very underrated IMO. "I fall down" is another great song from that album. As well as the namesake of the album.

Gloria in te, Domine
Gloria, exultate
Gloria, gloria
Oh Lord, loosen my lips.
"Glory to you, Lord,
Glory! Rejoice!"

Edge's slide guitar work on this song always stood out to me.

I love early U2. Especially October and Unforgettable Fire.
It's the opening track to their album "October". Great album from start to finish. One of their very best.

Seems to me like someone hated oasis even before listening to the song
However much you hated that Melvin song, that is a FRACTION of how much I fucking hate U2.
