Dude every time a new Tetris game comes out I'm like "They're not gonna convince me to buy Tetris again" but the idea of playing through history, with a theme matching each era of the story being told??? That's so absurdly unique
I grew up with that one as my first Tetris. I wish that was a part of this collection. The baseball minigame was always something my sister got and I was so upset that I couldn't play it. They should have at least added the mode as a bonus.
I loved playing Tetris as a child (and even now as an adult). It was my first video game. My parents got me Tetris Plus for my birthday one year and I would play it everyday for hours after school. I got really good at Tetris, but somehow never got good at that mini game. I played even more just to get good at the baseball mini game and still failed every time. "I am the man who arranges the blocks that continue to fall, from up above. As they go down, I spin them around. A perfect regime of peace and love." - a song you've probably not heard before.
Yeah, that's the problem with making a Tetris collection. Most of the versions out there were developed by other companies under the Tetris license, which means the Tetris Company doesn't fully own them. For example, that arcade version was made by Atari, so they'd need to get the rights from Atari to include it. All of the games in *this* collection were developed by Bullet Proof Software, Henk Rogers's company.
@@lobsteros but didn't they had all the 100% rights back in 1995 and now owned by Henk, his daughter and Alexei? Im bit lost 'cause the story is very affascinating but also very complicated with the mess they did with licenses. Not expecting for example Tetris 99 being playable, but idk if Nintendo have rights or not, just sad that A LOT of versions and types are missing. I hope in a future DLC, like they did recently with Atari 50 Years Collection, if im not wrong.
@@Devilot91 The Tetris Company fully owns the rights to the Tetris name, brand, and the original game, but that doesn't mean they fully own every VERSION of the game. The copyright for every individual port-the assets, programming code, etc-is still owned by the developers that made them, or whoever their contract says they belong to. That's why the NES and GB versions are on Switch Online and not in this collection, because Nintendo partially owns them. The Tetris Company can make as many Tetris games as they want, decide who is and is not allowed to make or release officially-licensed Tetris games, and collect royalties for all Tetris products on the market. But there's no singular "ownership of all things Tetris" that gives them full reign to claim full ownership of every product that's ever bore the Tetris name, without exception. There's just no such concept in IP law. Like, if you made your own Tetris game without permission from them and sold it for money, they could sue you for it, but they can't just rerelease your game without YOUR permission. They don't just _own_ your game because you called it Tetris. They own parts of it, like the trademark to the name and maybe some patents (I'm not actually sure if any part of Tetris's gameplay is patented), but you still own the code and anything else you made yourself. Rights are complicated like that. For example, for a long time, Nintendo couldn't even rerelease the original arcade version of Donkey Kong because they outsourced the programming to another company and didn't secure the copyright to the code. That's why until recently, they only ever re-released the NES version, which they developed in-house.
@@Devilot91 I wrote up a long comment in response to this but I'm not seeing it anymore, so I guess it must have been lost to the TH-cam void somehow... here's the short(er) version: The Tetris Company fully owns the original Tetris game, brand, and all associated trademarks. They can make their own Tetris games, license the brand out to other companies, and collect royalties on all officially-licensed products. But that does _not_ mean they own the copyright of every version of the game ever made. IP law is more complicated than that. Each individual _version_ of Tetris, like the programming code and assets and stuff, is copyrighted by the original developers, unless there's a contract stating otherwise. If you, for example, programmed and sold your own Tetris game without permission, sure, the Tetris Company might sue you for trademark infringement. But what they CAN'T do is rerelease your game without YOUR permission, because even though they own Tetris, they don't own your code. If they did that, you could sue THEM.
