    The relay being pulled at the beginning is the fuel injector fuse. It is recommended that the actual fuel pump relay be removed which is located above the accelerator in a strange plug usually yellow or green colored on later models.

      +SLarson Yet again, 3000GT's are almost non-existent too compared to Miatas, unfortunately. I have a 93' 300ZX and the community is a fraction of the size as well. Cool cars though!

      SLarson Yeah I just meant since there are far less of the cars, there are far fewer people that are looking for the same information, so less demand for someone to put in a lot of time making videos. Not that it should stop anyone though.

    Great analogy with the water hose feeding tomato garden. The best teachers can explain using language us students can relate to and understand. Same goes for sports and anything that is more difficult to understand intuitively. I am watching to decide upgrades to a newly purchased ‘04 Mazdaspeed that I will have my friendly mechanic install, but may want to wrench some myself because of your inspiration. Thank you sensei!

    To anyone having difficulty getting the rail out: I ended up just pulling the fuel pressure regulator off, made getting the rail in and out a lot easier. It's just two (9mm?) bolts and a little pulling. Be warned, fuel is gonna spill out of it

    Can I just take a moment to say thank you for your channel and your broke and boosted series. You make very nice quality videos and take the time to lay out everything to consider when turboing our miatas. Most of the stuff is already stuff I know and have done on my own cars, but I constantly get asked by other people just starting out. In a sense I get a very miataturbo attitude sometimes and don't want to be bothered helping some folks who can't comprehend how to use google or search before they ask silly questions. But thanks to your channel I now have a place I can refer them too that is a video and their ADD personalities can sit and watch it and buffer out a lot of their newb questions. So again, thank you. I've been following your channel for a bit now, if you're ever in the Chicago area hit me up and I'll let you tool around in one of my turbo track cars.

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Phil Miecznikowski Hahaha awesome, thanks. I'm just trying to create a resource that's helpful like a forum, but in a completely different layout. It really is frustrating sometimes to find simple answers, and a 5 minute conversation can answer dozens of questions that can take weeks of research to halfway firgure out with Google and forum searches. I'm not smarter or a better mechanic than any of the 'experts' on miataturbo, and my car is just a cookie-cutter build for the most part, I just like taking topics that I've learned and find interesting and turning them into formatted and comprehensive videos. Some people even like them!

    love the videos man.. just totaled my TL and im leaning towards buying a miata and boosting it because of you. (and haggardgarage of course lol). I have a suggestion for a new video that i think would really help a lot of turbo noobs like myself.
    ive always been confused about all the little things you can get for a turbo . such as, blow off valves, oil catch cans, etc.. i noticed in your how to turbo a miata video that you dont say anything about bov's or other "turbo accessories" like that.. i think it would be a great video to explain what these things are and why or why they are not necesarry..

    Greg, I got all this, and get the numbers in just fine. The problem comes when I then do some data logging and attempt to move the new VE table values over to the Megasquirt. The VE table values go, but my fuel number always reverts back to the stock 12.5. If I change it and then save it, everything is fine until I try to update my VE table values again. Is this just something I have to live with, or is there a setting I haven't clicked to make the tune remember my fuel value from update to update.
    If it helps, I'm running the MSPNP2.

    Hey! I saw your update on snapchat earlier and it looks like you're getting intercooler/piping mocked up. I know this is probably going to be a video all on its own, and if it is could you briefly go over different types of blow off valves and HOW to mount them? I am guessing you got a kit from eBay and I plan on doing the same.. I just can't justify buying until I know I'm buying the right stuff (for cheap!). All the flanges and adapters make it a little confusing to someone who's never seen them before. Thanks and keep up the progress!

    Hi,
    I bought a 1997 Miata STO for my wife, the previous owner had an issue with the car getting hot so he took it to Mazda and had a new head, head gasket, timing belt, water pump, thermostat and radiator installed. Then him and his wife split up so i got the car for a great price. I noticed it ran well, idled nice and did pretty good under most circumstances. The problem i have is when you get on the throttle and starting rolling up thru the RPM's...it has spots of hesitation in the power band...the wife doesnt notice it but i do...its not necessarily "jerky" but it has spots of hesitation. I replaced the fuel filter, plugs, wires and coil packs...also cleaned the throttle body , MAF and EGR valve but its still there. The only thing left is to replace the injectors, fuel reg' and possibly the fuel pump (and maybe the factory cat and downstream O2 senosor.... do you have any thoughts or ideas on this?

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mr T Sounds like you've got the main things covered, if the hesitation is at full throttle it's most likely not the O2 sensor since it's only used at cruise and idle. Fuel pumps typically work fine, then just die. You may want to start with a fuel filter, and also check the ignition advance. Base timing should be at 10 degrees.

    • @MDTAR15
      @MDTAR15 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I already did the fuel filter as mentioned in the original post and the previous owner said the timing was done less than 90 days ago. I'm kinda lost here. The problem Isn't at wide open throttle, its just when you're running up thru the RPM's more aggressively than just normal driving (But not floored).

  • @Bocvn68
    @Bocvn68 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, I have wideband sensor that reads 7.4 at idle and the low end, reads 21.1 above 3k. Despite the O2 reading's my Miata drives pretty good. Much better than the stock ones.

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +boaz ovilma Something might be wired wrong, or the sensor might be bad. At 21.1 the car won't even run, and it definitely won't idle at 7.4.

    Did you have a video covering the pros and cons (if any) of batch fire vs sequential fire? Or does the MX-5 even batch fire to begin with?

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Porsche Duésnburg The 1.6 has batch fuel. With sequential, you're firing the fuel right into the open port on each cycle, where with batch, half the time the fuel charge sits on the intake valve waiting to open. Sequential is just more efficient (and modern..)

    Hi, Big Fan of your show, here. My only question is, what injectors size is recommended for a 1.6 Miata boosted to 5-7 psi? I swap my stock injectors to the 1.8's injectors.

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +boaz ovilma Do you have a wideband? 1.8 injectors should be okay if you have raised fuel pressure, I'm not sure if they'll be enough if you're at stock pressure. A wideband will tell you if your AFR's are safe.

  • @SteSprea
    @SteSprea 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi greg, love your videos, love your channel and your miatas!!!
    I want to ask you a few questions on injectors. If i remember well you said in the broke & boosted intro or in another of your first video that is better to install some of your components and let the car run smootly BUT in case of injectors, you said in this video that there isn't necessary to install injectors with more flow if the car is stock and it doesn't need them or if the ecu can't manage all that fuel/mixture flow, right? So isn't it a paradox?
    Ps. I also want to ask you a question about the video you posted on snapchat or instagram ( ? Can't remember correctly) where you where passing through yout favorite tunnel, and before enter in it you've switched some buttons... I was wondering if they actually works as switchers to differents ecu maps and if it is possible to do something like this maybe setting one easy map for cruising daily and another aggressive map to have fun.
    Pps. Sorry 4 bad english im italian

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +ste sprea It can be very confusing I know! Basically, if you need more fuel, you have two choices. You can install bigger injectors or add more fuel pressure to the stock injectors. I think the video you're talking about is the "How to Turbo Your Miata" where I say you should add bigger injectors and get the car running smoothly before you add the turbo. You can ONLY add the bigger injectors if you have an upgraded ECU that knows how to control them. On the Broke & Boosted project, I'm going to be keeping the stock ECU, so I can't upgrade the injectors. I have to add more fuel pressure. Also I did say you don't need bigger injectors if you don't need them, but if you're going to turbo the car in the future, you can install the injectors first even if you don't have the turbo yet. What I was saying is that if you have a stock engine, and you add bigger injectors, you're not going to gain any power just by adding the injectors. The switches are for high and low boost, and to turn the 2-step on and off. Hopefully all that makes sense!

    • @SteSprea
      @SteSprea 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheCarPassionChannel thanks man, think i got it!
      Ps. High/low boost switchers are a feature of megasquirt?
      Can't wait for upcoming video ^^

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ste sprea The boost control switch is just turning the EBC on and off. The 2-step control just interrupts the signal to the clutch switch. So technically neither are features of MS, but you can add switches to do things like map switching.

  • @dpsheals

    So with stock injectors/pump/ecu, I should just up my fuel pressure? I have just a cai and exhaust.Currently upgrading my car. Slowly changing gaskets and cleaning it out. Wanted to change to 450cc injectors but it sounds like it’s too much??

    What could happen if you forget to put in or lose one of the plastic spacers for the bolts on the fuel rail? My 1.8 has three bolts holding it in place and the middle one is missing the spacer.

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +achikennugget38 It's possible you could have a fuel leak or a vacuum leak if the rail isn't secured properly, but those spacers are probably $2 so it's a good idea to get one back in there.

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +De Rogie boy You could probably do an air valve delete on the stock ECU, but cold starts might be much harder. I'd recommend making a block plate, installing it but leaving the air valve off to the side, and start it up with the engine cold to see how it does.

      Pulling the black relay under the hood and cranking the car for a couple seconds will relieve the fuel pressure, and also remove your gas cap.

    @TheCarPassionChanne - When deciding to upgrade your injectors. Is it better to wait until the turbo is strapped on to bump up to 460cc? I am going to install my MS2pnp here soon and was wondering if there is any downside to slowly start upgrading my fuel system starting with 190LPH pump, then new regulator then new injectors if I stay NA for a bite. Eventually I'll put that Gt2554R but wanted to know if its bad to have all the other stuff upgraded so much while staying NA for a bit. Thanks for you help

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Troy Sebo There is absolutely no downside to upgrading the injectors beforehand. In fact, I highly recommend it! That way you can get it running smooth n/a on the big injectors before going turbo. I have a buddy that ran his stock 1.8L on megasquirt with 1000cc injectors before he went turbo.

    one question. Can I run RX8 injector (550cc) with stock engine and MS3X? Is that too much for stock engine or can I control it by MS3X? I want to install as many as I can for upgrade when the engine is out so I don't have to take them apart again when the turbo is ready. thank you.

      +董文博 You can run 1000cc on the stock engine if you want, it's all in the tune. My friend ran 1000cc on his stock 1.8L and the drivability and fuel mileage was just like stock.

    hey what injectors do you use and how much did you pay for them? i have seen a lot of options but im honestly not sure. i am looking to get around 230 whp. also should i upgrade my fuel pump if im trying to push that much hp?

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +jonathan alipio The stock pump can handle that, it's never a bad idea to replace it if it's old. I use Five-O Black Ops 750cc injectors but you need a lot more injector for E85. I started with refurbished yellow RX8's from eBay, they were $170 and I did around 220-230whp on 91 octane with them. Those are also plug and play. (You still need standalone ECU, but they fit into the stock rail and use the stock harness plugs.)

    Great video as always but... forgive me for asking but: so I can upgrade just injectors for basic not modified miata no need to upgrade fuel regulator and fuel pump ? if i just upgrade injectors is it give me any extra power ?

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ToFast2beSlow Installing bigger injectors alone will not give you any extra power. They are a "supporting modification" which means you only need to upgrade them when your current units can't provide enough fuel.

    I'm not sure if I got it right...let's say I want to run around 300hp and I upgrade my fuel injectors to 450cc and my fuel pump to 320L/min. Also I have a standalone ECU. Do I need to buy an adjustable FPR to raise up the fuel pressure (equally to the boost) or is the ECU able to handle that?

    • @TheCarPassionChannel

      Jan 94 if the injectors are the correct size and the pump can maintain pressure then you don't need to raise the pressure with an adjustable FPR

  • @GittereDesign

    Hey Greg I know this is an old video hopefully you can see my comment out of all the ones you get all of the time but I have a '90 Miata and I noticed that my idle wasn't stable and it would be rough when cold and I would compare it to a cammed muscle car also on top of that my car had no power till 3k or so RPM and when it hit that the car would instantly pull. I can compare the feeling to a boosted car with turbo lag if that makes any sense. I looked up on the forums and found that it is the injector insulator. So I would need to replace the faulty injector right? I figure I might as well just upgrade all the injectors since I have to replace them any how. I don't know what injectors to use or what all I will need after changing my injectors. Will I need an aftermarket ECU if I get bigger injectors? I hope you get my question because I don't want my car to stay sitting for long. Thanks!

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tyler Gittere I wouldn't guarantee the diagnosis from a forum; but if you need to replace the injectors and you want larger ones you will need a standalone ECU. If your car is n/a there's no benefit to going with a larger injector though.

    Awesome! Maybe you can shed some light if an injector is bad or plugged. My mileage recently became pretty bad and no other changes. My compression is good (per your video), just changed my fuel filter, plugs and wires, and no trouble codes ('96 with ODB1, yes ODB1) as well as the engine runs smooth. Could an injectors be clogged? Can you check this with the injectors in the engine, how could you check if you pulled the injectors? Any insight is appreciated. Keep up the good work!

    • @joro8604
      @joro8604 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Finally figured it out. My car is an early 96-- thought it was a carry over OBD1 but finally found that it did have an OBD2 connector (which was sort of haphazardly put on by the factory and super hard to see). Anyway, I connected my OBD2 WiFi dongle on, opened up DashCmd on my iPhone and get 28MPG Ave but only 20 in the city with non aggressive driving. This seems a little thirsty but reasonable- may change the O2 sensor and clean up the IAC and MAF. Compression is good but think my seals are leaking. Thanks for following up and the good work. (BTW- I'd love to see a vid on diagnosing and replacing issues with the head on the Miata, if you are looking for suggestions)

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, injectors won't make any difference. The stock AFM has a temp sensor in it that will make fuel adjustments if the air is any colder.

    • @cman13ba
      @cman13ba 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheCarPassionChannel okay thanks. Since the air intake brings in more air into the engine would getting bigger injectors make more hp?

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      JosephCJ13 Nope, unless you're maxing out the current injectors, bigger injectors won't help. Power is determined by how much air you can get into the engine, the injectors are just there to maintain the correct air/fuel ratio. You won't be maxing out the stock injectors without a turbo, supercharger, or nitrous.

    What about better fuel filters? Like better flow & even smaller contaminates filtered out? If possible? I don't know what the MX5's fuel filter is like, but I'm asking incase any knows the answer. And all this can help anyone improving the hardware & software of the fuel system, of something other then an MX5.

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +RoyalSilver&Gold I've never heard of anyone using an upgraded fuel filter, people have done like 500whp with the stock one, it's not much of a restriction.

    • @observingrogue7652
      @observingrogue7652 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheCarPassionChannel I was worried about that. I'm just thinking of every way, to make an engine as strong & efficient as possible. As with the fuel system, I was thinking about a better fuel filter & pump, but you said the pump may not need to be upgraded, and now, fuel filters may not be so restrictive.
      Next. If I remember correctly from automotive school, one of my instructors said, in drag racing, some people have their fuel lines, like spiraling into a bucket of ice water, before the engine, to make the fuel denser, like more fuel molecules through the injectors. I don't know how effective that would be. So at most, I will just protect the fuel lines from heat sources, by wrapping them in heat reflective tape, and in my case, the walls of my bike's fuel tank, that's facing the engine. Last, I still haven't confirmed if this is complete bullshit, but I remember videos about putting powerful magnets on the fuel line, to improve the fuel flow, like in the rail & out the injectors.
