New Zealand and Australia mostly get the same changes that Europe does, like instead of Greatest Hits for the PS1 we get Platinum, which is silver instead of an obnoxiously bright green. I actually like this change.

Fun fact: in New Zealand, if a console is reaching the middle or end of its life, stores will usually face the bulk of its games with the spine facing out to maximise shelf space. Only killer app games or a single 'stack' of a big name game will be displayed front-facing. Therefore, for the Player's Choice games, an altered spine would *indeed* be a selling point, as games stores were not a Thing here until the last few years, and shelf space in video shops and warehouse-style shops is always at a premium.
This was especially useful for the DS, where our PAL region casings meant you could only stack two or three games front-facing compared to four or five spine-facing.
Didn't we get games in the American case in ANZ?
@@YasEmisDaBus It might have varied by country or time, but my experience in regional NZ we were classed as either PAL or Asia. Anything in American style casings was usually imported ahead of its regional release date (often years later), and mostly showed up as pre-owned games of dubious reliability or outright bootlegs or cracks of popular games.

These re-releases are based solely on sales figures; review scores don't factor in. It's unfortunate because it means that incredible gems which are overlooked during their first year can then become difficult to find once they're out of print.
The only "company's choice" that actually matters is Nintendo selects. All the Wii U and 3DS games that had it earned it.

I am forever grateful for "players choice" editions of games. My parents would hate buying me pricey $60 video games, but to have all these awesome games in the $20 bin at walmart was a blessing. It pretty much saved my childhood, or else I don't think I'd have the chance to play the games I wanted.

I actually liked the Burgundy from the PS2 Greatest Hits. I think I might have preferred the splash of color. Interesting to see Scott get so worked up on it. It's like getting a chance to talk to a person at the same live show about the live show.

Watching this after the 200th episode. Yeah I can see why the first quarter of that video is Scott taking jabs at his own format. We love him for that.
This was the video that really convinced me that I am not alone in the universe. There was someone else, an ocean and a cornfield away, who also had intense, redundant opinions on plastic and fonts. This was what made me a Scott the Woz fan.

The only time, the ONLY time, I ever purchased one of those was when I needed a replacement disc for Red Faction 2 because I decided to rip it out of my Xbox and toss it at the wall when a multiplayer match pissed me off. I didn't need a new case or manual, so just the disc at a budget price was perfect.
From what I know, they're fine with swapping out the gamestop box for the original box if they have it.

I'm not a physical game collector, but I do love books - and I 100% understand your pain!! The worst is when you're buying a series and then they change the art halfway through!!!! Or even change the size of the books, so that there are sudden height changes on the shelf! I have literally stopped buying some series because they've suddenly changed the cover art - and now, I utterly REFUSE to buy physical copies of any books until the ENTIRE series is out and I can get them all at once in the same style. Drives me crazy!
I actually really like the Players choice games, the presentation of it with ribbons, gold, and burgundy makes it look like a treasure in my opinion

I took a moment to really think about this video and then I laughed because it's just a man ranting about a paper insert being printed differently than the majority of other paper inserts for 12 minutes and 21 seconds straight
Great value bleach No, it's a skillfully edited and wonderfully written video, in which all 10 plus minutes were entertaining, somewhat informative. It's the end product of someone's hard work and dedication, a humorous video about a light hearted and ultimately unimportant topic that was put together rather well from start to finish; A shining example of this creators ability to take an idea and turn it into a fully realized project. That's a huge skill and super important thing to know you can do, and anyone else for that matter.

Agreed -- the GameCube "Player's Choice" games are actually the less-egregious out of any of these, and I rather quite like that gold, "PLAYER'S CHOICE" ribbon across the very top of the case. As well, the overall label real-estate taken up by the golden spine-logo is far, *far* less barfulous than, say, the absolutely horrid-looking grey/silver Xbox 360 Platinum repackagings, for example.

I do that too. In fact, I hate when I see a collection that mixes them together because it does not look good at all. I get that some people, Scott included, like their collections alphabetized, but you could always alphabetize each section.

Ah, yes. The video that introduced me to Scott by randomly appearing in my recommendations. Subscribed and have been watching since. Never thought I would get to consider myself someone who subscribed to a TH-camr before they got super popular, but here we are. Thanks for the 2 (wow) years of entertainment, Scott, and here's to many more! ...and also thanks for bringing my OCD self to the attention of tacky looking "bestseller" re-releases of games that subsequently caused me to invalidate all of the games I owned in my collection under those labels because they looked different from the others. Ever since I first saw this video I've made it my mission that whenever I buy something to rebuild my retro games collection, I ensure that it's the greatest hits, platinum hits, players choice/nintendo select edition of a game (if available) just out of spite. That and to make mine look different than other collections.
Thinking about it, a collection solely of these rereleases would actually look pretty awesome considering the uniformity, and it would be cheaper to grow! I wouldn't look down on such a collection at all.

I always liked the yellow labels on the GameCube players choice boxes. As a kid I always thought that It made them stand out and seem more important than the other games. Maybe it’s just me though.

It's crazy that the first run of 360 platinum hits is seemingly the least visually offensive to you, it makes the actual box art take up half the space it should.
My dude! as a kid, i fricken LOVED ps2 greatest hits games! they felt special, like a game that had proved its worth, a game that stood out among the rest, a game i knew was going to be good! i thought the packaging was really cool! and i do have one question... why not just put the greatest hit/players choice/platinum etc games next to each other on the shelf? that way theyll look like they belong there?

What I do is I separate the different variations first, and then organize them in alphabetical order separately, that way it’s alphabetical, but all the Players Choices are together, all the Grey-White gradient Platinum Hits are together and separate from the full-spine Platinum Hits which are also all together.

My parents bought Player's Choice games for me when I was younger because they figured "well if other people like it, it must be a good game and it's much cheaper too." That's how I got to play Wind Waker, Paper Mario TTYD, Pikmin, Kirby Air Ride, and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle which I thought were all excellent games.

As far as the Game Cube goes, black and yellow goes together pretty well, IMO, so as long as you have a decent spread it shouldn't look too bad. Get too many clustered together and each cluster too far apart it might start to look a bit garish, and, yeah, if you only have a handful then it's an atrotious eye sore.

As someone that was an older teenager that had some money, but not a lot of money, during this Era of gaming, the Yellow/burgundy tag did definitely make you look. It often let you know a big game was cheap. Not always, as some terrible games got on the "must have" lists, but overall, it made you notice.

Oh god I thought I was the only one. Yes I know it’s the same game but a little symmetry of the case with other games goes a long way. It is a shame that game developers/merchandisers don’t understand this
Here in Australia the Switch case logos are in the centre of the spine, and the font isn't all in uppercase letters. Because of that the Super Bomberman R logo isn't that horrible when put next to other games, because it's in the same position though it still has the weird font.
I can relate to this video so much.
