Fun Fact: The Sonic R ending image was originally going to be both the Box Art and TItle Screen, but was removed as it'd spoil Metal Sonic being an unlockable character...why didn't they just edit him out?

@@allenelijah7063 In all fairness, Sonic R isn't THAT bad of a game, it's fun to play when you're unlocking everything, but once you've done that, the entertainment quickly runs out
This was 1997 we're talking, where editing meant changing the dynamic parts of the cover art (brightness, blur, sharpness etc.) Most available software wasn't at all capable of cutting out a huge chunk of the image without effort nothing short of just re-drawing the whole thing.

When Scott mentioned the Spider-Man cover being bad my mind instantly went to trying to fix it. My main idea is him sitting on a rooftop eating a sandwich with New York visible behind him, Empire State Building, Central Park, and Oscorp visible in the background.
Just imagine it. It sounds great imo
I never played spiderman PS4 but... maybe a cover referencing the cover of the classic comics? i dunno, maybe spiderman swinging around while holding a person he just saved, with new york visible behind him. To make the game feel even more like the "Definitive Spider-man game"
Agreed for two reasons. One the world should be a focus on the cover. Two, Spider-Man's main appeal especially in the PS4 game isn't just that "well he's Spider-Man", it's his charisma and charm. Him doing a generic hero pose doesn't tell you why Spider-Man is a great superhero compared to others, the SMPS4 box art could be ANY superhero doing that pose. But if you had him on a rooftop eating a sandwich, maybe his phone held up to his ear, you communicate his humanity. He's in the Spider-Man costume, but we're seeing Peter Parker's real self through his body language. So much personality could be conveyed just by a simple image.

I dont think that would fit. Spider man NY goes together like cookies and milk so thst could go for any spiderman game. In game spider man is stressed and there is a lot of stuff happening to him so him chilling on cover art wouldnt go very well with the game. I think a cover art showing spiderman fight or about to fight all 12 villains at once would be maybe more fitting if done correctly
How to fix the Spider-Man Box Art:

You CAN fix the Spider-Man box art! Do what I did. Take the game's cover, and check if it has the reversible cover, with Spider-Man jumping from a building, with iconic things in the background, like a re-elect Norman Osborn poster in the background, the slogan of the Daily Bugle, and a bunch of buildings in the background with a close-up on Spider-Man. And if it does, flip the cover around with the generic one. Ta-da! Cover officially fixed! And, the spine of the cover is still the same as the original one, so it doesn't stand out awkwardly on your shelf!

@@cathalmckibben7176 No problem, dude! I love the Spider-Man PS4 game. And I'm a huge Spidey fan, myself. I have been for years. Especially since the 90's, when I was a kid. This is the best Spider-Man game ever, that doesn't have Bruce Campbell in it. But I suppose Yuri Lowenthal does his job playing Spider-Man well, as he does with the majority of the roles he's been in, ranging from Matt Miller in Saint's Row 3, and 4, Sasuke Uchiha in Naruto, Ben from Ben 10: Alien Force, and now, Peter Parker/Spider-Man in this game. I also love the reversible cover art for the game too. Why wasn't that just the regular cover art? Especially at the angle Spidey's jumping at in the reversible cover art. Would've made a much better cover. Because it works well with the elements of the game, and all the things in the back, the re-elect Norman Osbron as mayor signs, and the signs for the Daily Bugle in the back too, symbolize the game well, because they're both signs to can see in the actual game itself as you play. They also could've put a sign for the Avengers Tower on the cover art too, but you can scale the tower too. So maybe it would've been too much. Still the best Spider-Man game out there, with the worst cover art for a Spider-Man game that I've ever seen, with the best reversible cover art I've ever seen. Besides the RE2 remake's reversible cover art of Leon and Claire. Sorry for the long ranting message, and again, you're welcome, dude!
@@kota69420 Yeah, it could. Too bad they went with him jumping generically out of a red background for the official cover art. Still a great game, but the cover art just screams generic Spider-Man game, when it's quite possibly the absolute BEST Spider-Man game ever created by mankind.

Fire Emblem Awakening has some of the best box art of the 3DS era. It's one of the few box arts I see parodied from time to time the art is that good. It is both memorable and symbolic of the game's content plus there is some cool attention to detail such as Kellam's face being covered in every rendition. (A running gag is Awakening is that Kellam is this giant dude but nobody notices him when he is in the room.)
My favorite detail is how Lucina is moving back, but despite that both her’s and chrom’s falcions are facing the same direction, showing how they have the same goal with a different path taken

Imagine being an artist in any medium working on a video game. You spend months designing something or a year composing a soundtrack only to be told it’s not art. Soul crushing.

Scott should’ve mentioned the New Vegas box art, and the differences between the standard edition and the ultimate edition.
The standard edition does that same “guy with gun” thing as any fps while the city of new Vegas takes a backseat to the ranger who is staring into the camera with a gun in his hand. In the ultimate edition, the city is the main focus, shining bright and towering into the sky while the ranger stands to the side and looks on into the city. The ultimate edition gives a much better representation of the game’s themes and style.
It would seem that Insomniac is actually going to do the "similar covers for every game in the series" thing for Spider-Man and it could end up looking quite nice once they get to three or four installments in the franchise.

Holy crap on a biscuit Doom Eternal has one of the most kickass and beautiful box art pieces of all gaming! It shows that the Doom 2016 box art was just done to help people get back into Doom, and once Doom was back on top they decided to get crazy! And it worked

I remember first hearing people talk about how great it was and I was like "Really?". The box art just kind of gave me the impression that it was just another run-of-the-mill shooter and nothing more.
marinus18 Well in hindsight it was a good idea to make Doom 2016 look “generic” and “attractive to the general audience”, because it helped sell a fantastic game and resurrect the Doom franchise!
I feel like a lot of box art like Doom 16’s don’t have the character seem to have an emotion. I don’t know what it is but the Slayer looks angry to me in the box art and I like it for that. It’s weird that Doom Slayer and Goblin Slayer can portray so much anger in a face you don’t even see.

Pac-Man was definitely art in it's code. Each of the ghosts had it's own "personality" - ie, routine based on your actions - which you might never have noticed once the game started.

One of the best pieces of videogame box art imo is the cover of Blue Reflection: Second Light, it was the sole reason why I got it and it turned out to be such an amazing game. It still remains one of my favorite covers of any piece of media.

Exactly. KH3 shows off some great box art. Showing off the main characters looking off at the sunset, which is beautifully done, while showing off the characters who need to be saved too, like Ven, Terra, Aqua, Xion, Roxas, Namine, and the other characters, like King Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Kairi, Riku, Axel, and Sora. Every KH game has had beautiful box art, from the first one, with Sora and friends looking up at the moon or in other directions, or KH2, but I love how 3's art also looks like the clock tower from Twilight Town. Like they're all standing together against the darkness. Speaks volumes about the game. Great box art, great game. Not always indicative of the quality of a game itself, but it can give people a good first impression of the game. Makes me more excited to go back to it sooner and sooner. I also love the Toy Story poster that came with the game too. Glad Scott could see the beauty of KH box art, like 3's. Is there a Final Mix version of 3 yet? And, would it looke better than the current one 3 has?

Ugh, those were terrible. I have a used copy of InFamous 2 lying around with the GameStop box art. It’s some hideously drawn anime characters, one with a shopping bag and another having a seizure with a controller in his hand.
Funnily enough, I went to GameStop and Disc Replay and both of them refused to take it, said they have “too much stock”, but I think it’s because of the box. I should try selling it again without the case.

My favourite Alternate Box Art is Super Mario 3D Land's. It’s nice seeing the Simplicity of the Characters and Enemies in Red Outlines. Though the normal Box Art is quite nice too.

I have the bioshock 360 steelbook, looks really cool but only the logo is on it.
I know they don’t fit at all in collections and sometimes is just a logo, but is still kind of considered box art and it would’ve been nice to see Scott’s opinion on them. Also Spider-Man - game which he complaint about the box art - got a better box art in the steel book case version.
Yeah, he talked about Nier Automata Jap vs USA box art and I was thinking "Well, it doesn't matter to me, because in that case I have both of them because I own the stellbook edition".
I have the Red Dead Redemption 2 Steelbook, it’s so cool. It’s like an 1800s-style book with an image of all of the main characters inside.

BotW and Twilight Princess are two of the best games ever, and have wonderful box art depicting it in addition.
Probably won't read this, but at 6:17 you said take an in-game model and spruce it up while showing the Street Fighter V box art, but that box art is a drawing by professional artist Stanley Lau, aka ArtGerm.
He's done a decent amount of work with Capcom doing promotional images for their fighting games, such as the character art for SF3:Third Strike Online Edition and Darkstalkers Resurrection being the more notable examples.
I like the European art for BotW, it looks like Link is inviting you to come along to the adventure.

I know, right? The pre-owned art sucks. Ruins the covers of games. Like when I got SR4 again, it was the crappy pre owned cover art. I was still just glad to have the game again though. But, it's also the only game I currently have that has the crappy pre-owned cover on it, so it stands out in a bad way, box art-wise. But, game-wise, I'm glad to have it again on the ps4. It had been too long since I'd played through it. Listening to the awesome music, the fan service and call backs the game has, the references, the jokes, it's pretty much perfect, really. This video is also pretty much perfect. But, then again, when ISN'T one of Scott's videos pretty much perfect, dude?
My favorite box art is the Persona 5 box art. Plus the GTA games have a cool box art format.

I dont like persona 5's boxart much. It feels kinda generic, its just the characters posing in their school outfits with Arsene behind. It isnt bad, but P5 is very stylish and eye popping. P5Royal on the other hand looks a lot better. The characters are in more dynamic poses and its more eyecatching.

@@EisenSMT I'd recommend 1 or 2, X is an oddball of a game and while it's a good game, 1 and 2 will show you what the Xenoblade series is all about. Personally I love 2 more than 1, but pick which ever you want, it doesn't matter. They're great.
1 has great box art as well, which I would guess you're aware of considering it's basically your profile pic

4:20 - Oml, yes. Atari box art: *10/10, honestly.* As much flack as Atari gets, and believe me, all justified, you can't deny that the box art for a ton of the games on that system were honestly mind blowing. If you blow up the often small box art you can see that Atari is one of the systems whose library has one of, if not the best and most consistent box art in gaming history, and it's literally never brought up unless it's to make a joke about how bad the games are in comparison. I would argue Atari had better art than modern box art in consistency personally. So much more variety than just "dude with gun in front of title" x30. It's clear that many developers for the Atari put a lot of time in that art which was often used for full page ads as well in order to help people imagine what their games were supposed to look like, I mean look at the "Asteroids" cover. Holy crap. I love the painterly feel, a ton of them look like movie posters which adds a strange kind of weight to them in a mainstream kind of way. Like you could hang that art up on the wall as a poster and it doesn't scream "this is a box art for a video game on my wall".
There is a real artistry put into many of them. Other highlights you should look up: "Space Invaders", "Gravitar", and "Mario Bros" for the Atari 2600. All insanely good for absolutely no reason, the Mario one for me a contender for the best Mario game box art.
Honestly interesting to take a certain thing about video games and ask what system and it's library did it best. The size of packaging, the manuals, the extra stuff. That's where outliers can shine, consoles that usually get sort of pushed aside. A good idea for conversation that isn't really had that much.
The games on Atari, though.. uuuh.... I dont wanna piss of AtariAge people, so let's just say, they are _rough_ if you aren't used to them. I like me some Kaboom though, that game is really addicting. Activision should remake it.
Personally I think Fire Emblem: Awakening has one of the best box art. Simple background, with multiple characters in striking poses, and A LOT of meaning. I mean after you play the game you realize the two swords are parallel and Kellam is covered up. The art references the game itself 😂
I think fates does well aswell shoowimg off the two sides and then revelations is the link that makes the full image of Nohr, Hoshido and Azura's home
Path of radiance along with radiant dawn are also great though a lot is going on in those. Also the north American box art for crash twinsanity is actually better than japans which is odd but hey twinsanity is an odd game it is great despite not being finished
