As far as re-release packaging goes, I actually really love the look of Nintendo Selects. That gold ribbon coming off the top and the deep velvet red looks so classy, and it looks like the cover art of the game is framed like it's hanging in a museum. Despite being "budget" re-releases it still felt PREMIUM. Wish they brought it back for Switch.
I love the look too I never really got any cus I was normally on top of getting most games I want pretty quickly after launch like typically within a year
I loved the Selects look as well, especially after the players choice yellow banners on the gamecube. The whole selects idea felt like a love letter to players. It was a way for new players to jump into huge games that had already sold well and were widely loved. I do not understand why we don’t have it yet in Nintendo’s most financially explosive time ever. They’re raking in billions between hardware and software sales. How great it would be to get BoTW, Odyssey, Splatoon 2, MK8, and others with that select banner. I might actually go out and buy some of my games again to have it. I’ve been digital only since launch in 2017 so as to share games with my son. Anyways, back to real life lol
Agree to disagree. The big frame around the cover art always looks worse than the top banners. Platinum Hits can be uglier but Nintendo Selects is the second-worse to me.
I would absolutely argue this channel is on par with the main channel. Here though, the focus is obviously not the bits and edits, but Scott talking about the topic in the title. Not as "fun" but just as entertaining to me.
If say it’s as entertaining as the main channel but in a different ways. It’s nice to hear Scott’s unfiltered thoughts but also I love the long scripted style and higher effort.
during the wii and 3ds era, i basically lived off nintendo selects. the fact that i could buy a link between worlds or ocarina of time 3d for £15 or super smash bros brawl or wii sports resort for £20 was a major win as a kid
I think that was the best part about those games. As a kid, if you wanted a game you had to save up A LOT, wait until a holiday, or beg a family member to buy it for you. Nintendo Selects however, you could afford it on your own and get full price quality games. It’s a shame they don’t do them anymore, but it does make sense considering how successful the Switch is. There’s no need to milk longevity out of a console that can’t seem to stop selling units.
I remember Pikmin 2 was oddly priced a bit more in the USA at about $34.99 probably because it wasn't actually a re-release for us with it being a first time
I didn’t pick up many Nintendo Selects copies, but I really appreciate that they put out a version of Animal Crossing New Leaf with the Welcome amiibo update on the cartridge, it’s such a cool little treasure
Yellow is my favorite color, so I actually prefer the yellow spine with a black logo. Although the header on the front is definitely too intrusive to the overall design.
The redesigned covers never really bothered me. I much rather just be able to afford the games, also just a great way to find many of the "must own titles"
I wished they would do this to Nintendo Switch as well. Yoshi's Crafty World and Link's Awakening are games I am kinda interested to play, but i don't want to pay $60 for them. Even if they reduced it to $30 instead of $20, I would go for it.
Nintendo e-shop Selects was a nice idea. Limited Run sort of ran with that idea basing their whole business on creating physical releases of games that were only released in e-shop.
It’s interesting, as a kid I never put together that greatest hits were cheaper rereleases of physical games. I thought it was just a way for them to show off that a game had sold really well. Nintendo Selects though? Somehow the messaging got through to me that Nintendo Selects equals a $20 game. I don’t think I prefer it to Player’s Choice but it did make what it was a lot clearer to your average child.
These budget rereleases work well when a new console comes out. It gives the hold outs something to play with if they missed out, and provides a more packed lineup for the new console if backwards compatibility is an option.
i honestly don’t get the stigma against nintendo selects, it’s how i got mario galaxy for 10 bucks and that’s awesome (i got it used if i remember correctly)
Digital games getting a physical release is what Microsoft did on the 360. I still have a physical copy of symphony of the Night, geometry wars, and feeding frenzy.
I'm surprised Nintendo hasn't brought back the Nintendo Selects line (30 bucks price cut) for the Switch yet. Hopefully they do that could boost even more in software sales numbers.
Huh, the non-selects Wii Sports that were bundled with the Wii in Australia were always in regular plastic cases instead of cardboard ones. The gamecube players choice games in Australia also changed the Gamecube black banner to a silver/platinum shade. Must be a PAL/NTSC thing.
If it makes you feel any better I keep my American and Japanese GameCube games mixed together so not only is there Player's Choice but also boxes of completely different sizes mixed together.
Absolutely love the rate at which these videos drop. I do closing work shifts and run the floor machine through my workplace and find this kind of content to be so much fun to listen to. Thanks man!!! 🙌🙌
Why did Nintendo stop doing this? I wish they kept doing these because some of their switch games are SIX years old, yet still cost 60 dollars, especially some games that never deserved that price tag like Mario Tennis Aces and Arms
Yeah, I get that games like Zelda BOTW and Mario Odyssey keep selling constantly without needing a boost (nevermind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe), but there's titles like Arms, Mario Tennis Aces, Splatoon 2 (+DLC), Astral Chain, Fire Emblem 3 Houses, Kirby Star Allies, Yoshi's Crafted World, Link's Awakening and so on that have been succeeded or simply forgotten. Re-releasing them at a lower price point would definitely help boost game sales.
rather arrogant words, Mario Odysseus, and VOTV, Smesh Ultimate are excellent games of high quality, which is why these games sell well@@jesusbarrera6916
Nintendo did do some releases of DS Mario games. They put them out in Red cases instead of the typical gray. I have my copy of Partners in Time this way because I got it late, the red actually compliments the cover art. I can't remember if they made them cheaper or not, but I want to say they did. It's been so long I can't remember.
I suspect they're not doing Nintendo Selects for Switch games because the next console is planned to be fully backwards compatible, so they could still make a ton more money of older Switch games on the new system.
the PAL GameCube player's choice boxes are actually pretty cool, with the whole box taking on a silver color aside from the art exclusive to the game itself yes even the plastic of the case itself
Funny enough, Nintendo Selects is how I managed to get Nintendo Land on my Wii U. My system was the bundle with Smash and Splatoon, so I didn’t have it as a pack-in title. It was also around the time where Nintendo Land was re-released under the Selects branding.
Hearing that a 3DS spinoff of Disney's Frozen once released as a "Nintendo Selects" suddenly makes me wonder if Nintendo _actually_ selected some of these...
I have been listening to specifically Super Paper Mario’s 1-1 music off and on for a few days and started replaying the game last night and today Scott talks about it and plays the track throughout most of the video! What a crazy coincidence! Great video as always Scott!
It honestly made sense for Nintendo to re-release Wii Sports. Considering how popular the Wii was with casuals, especially children, there's a good chance the Wii Sports discs could've been destroyed or gone missing, so now it was easier to get a replacement copy.
Two of my favorite game cases I have are for Lego Star Wars and Lego Indiana Jones, on the 360. They're "Platinum Family Hits", and because of that, not only does the box art have a silver border, but the cases themselves are gray. It's neat. I wish the other Platinum Hits games I have (GTA 4, Skate 3, Black Ops 1&2) had the gray cases.
the wii sports re-release made sense for a little kid, I was 5 years old at the time and lost everything including my copy of wii sports that came with my wii
I'm tempted to think that it's possible Nintendo Selects was an idea created for the PAL region, but at the last minute was lent over to the US territory. It could explain some of the weirdness you described 🤔 Also, what did you think of the Player's Choice designs in the PAL region? I was expecting you to talk about it given how much you mentioned the PAL region in this video, but you didn't 😕
yeah im surprised we got a lot more selects than america considering that we usually get shafted by nintendo when it comes to cool stuff like this. i'll always appreciate it though since being able to get some of the wii and 3ds' killer apps for cheap was something i always appreciated as a kid
The best thing about the Nintendo Selects in Canada, is the price increase didn't happen until late into the 3DS' life. So, a lot of these Nintendo Selects only saved you 10 dollars. So, you could have already gotten these games at EBGames for the same price by then.
With almost everything being digital now , I understand how it would be hard to do this now. To be clear , Nintendo games would sell like bonkers if they dropped prices periodically. As of right now the only first party games I get are ones I know that I will like. That wouldn't be the case if six year old games weren't sixty dollars.
Personally I liked that Nintendo re-released WiiSports as a Select because I found that it was surprisingly easy to lose track of the pack-in title due to its stupid little sleeve, so it was a nice saving grace. But, of course, around this time, you would be better off just getting Resort
So, with the Wii U, when I got to select the "free" game, I chose Wind Wake HD. And I'm glad I did! I was, like many others, initially turned off by the original. But playing the HD remake, wow! Loved it!
10:50 i remember when pikmin 3 came out in august 2013, i saw a lot of people complain online about how impossible to find physical copies of pikmin 3 were and right after i heard about that, i walked into my local target and saw a few copies left in stock. i should of bought a copy because i did consider picking up pikmin 3 and donkey kong country tropical freeze when that came out in 2013 and 2014 respectively because there were to many software droughts on the wii u and i just wanted an excuse to use it because at the time, it was sitting in a bin in my closet gathering dust
The fact that selects came out in both 2011 and 2016 just before a new console came out, we can gather there won't be a switch 2 until after switch selects.... unless Nintendo do a Nintendo
I wish you showed the disc for these. Was the disc art printed differently? If not, I wonder if there is/was an active after market for just the case sleeve. That way, you could just swap out the sleeve and there would be no difference.
when talking about the re-released wii sports and nintendoland, Scott forgets these are kids games and kids break discs really easily so releasing a game that you couldn't previously buy in in stores is really smart.
0:51 N64 and GameBoy had the cleanest- just turning the red to gold/silver to gold on the box. I like having a few Player’s Choice games in my collections!
WiiSports having a cardboard sleeve as the only Non-Budget release must have only been in North America because both it and Link’s Crossbow Training always had proper Wii cases here in Australia. If you want an official WiiSports game case that isn’t selects, import one from Australia. I don’t know how much it would cost importing from Australia to the States (cos hell, it’s pricey the other way around) but maybe you find it worthwhile
I never like the budget line re-releases for any console, but I do have a couple Nintendo Selects: Ocarina of Time 3D and Super Paper Mario. I actually like them more than their originally releases, because the Selects border and ribbon make them feel like storybooks, and the games already felt like storybooks anyway.
Yeah, i have the Nintendo Selects print of Zelda Twilight Princess. My brother bought it way back in the 2010's. At least these re-releases are more nicer looking that the piss stains of the GameCube Player's Choice...
Being someone from a PAL reigon, I almost own more selects than normal games, especially for the 3DS. They’re WAY easier to find than the original versions.
@@5Detective yeah, so at his old apartment, he had carpet flooring and recorded his videos on that floor but when he moved, he got some similar looking carpet and put it on the table for these videos. He posted on Twitter about it.
on the 90's Players Choice were around too, the difference is that the boxes and labels had a golden ribbon , SNES and Game Boy games had it, and SNES games that were released before ESRB are now rated on Player's Choice versions, i have several Player's Choice SNES games
I think it’s telling that so many GameCube games received Player’s Choice re-releases throughout its generation whereas the Wii only had a few Nintendo Selects towards the end of its lifespan and when it started faltering. If the Switch ever sees its own line of Nintendo Selects, I wouldn’t expect to see anything until roughly 1 year before Nintendo’s next thing. They simply lack the incentive to do so if the games continue to sell at full price and especially if people are willing to buy a digital version that doesn’t require any physical manufacturing.
I realized after watching this, most of my dads gamecube games were Players Choice games, so its weird to think abouy how many games i never would have played if not for the massive price cut. Its a shame this went away and i can only hope they bring it back one day
Nintendo killed Selects (Players Choice on N64) because they realised the core audience they have mostly doesn't understand/realise/care how long these games have been out for or if they are re-releases/ports or whatever, they just hold the price and let the money roll in
Just picked up Luigi’s mansions dark moon brand new for $20 on Amazon. The 3ds consoles are slowly going up in price, so I’m buying up 3ds games while they’re still affordable
The was also the Korean titles for the selects which had the US covers but was called power soccer instead of football even though it was a copy of the US verson 😊
I always hated the ps1 greatest hits line, with me it was with Twisted Metal, because the disc was just blank (mirrored) while the “black box” had Sweet Tooth on them.
I think the main grip with nintendo selects for me is the fact that (at least on 3ds) they didn't cone with the manual. This might not upset anyone, but i wish they included them nonetheless
17:06 that's interesting, my European copy of Ocarina of Time 3D from Nintendo Selects still has the emblem, i wonder if the emblems were removed in the US versions of Selects or if it was dropped with the later batches of Selects games
another nice thing that they did for the wii u & 3ds specifically is that games that were part of nintendo selects also got their eshop prices cut to 20 bucks!

In at least the UK, early Wii's came with a boxed copy of Wii Sports! Later pack ins would change to the cardboard sleeve as seen here
WiiSports having a cardboard sleeve as the only Non-Budget release must have only been in North America because both it and Link’s Crossbow Training always had proper Wii cases here in Australia. If you want an official WiiSports game case that isn’t selects, import one from Australia. I don’t know how much it would cost importing from Australia to the States (cos hell, it’s pricey the other way around) but maybe you find it worthwhile
they're region locked
@@timelymirror7826 the cases aren’t. Plus I’m pretty sure Scott has a PAL WiiU anyway
Mario Super Sluggers was by far the best Mario sports game imo. Such a shame Nintendo didn’t bring this to the switch.
I know how these videos are really made but I like to imagine him on a carpet floor with his feet kicking up in the air.
A table with carpet?
@@5Detective yeah, so at his old apartment, he had carpet flooring and recorded his videos on that floor but when he moved, he got some similar looking carpet and put it on the table for these videos. He posted on Twitter about it.
I love the card packs! I bought a couple of them and loved the videos, so creative, and still brilliant content!
Super Paper Mario deserves to be in the original box in a collection...the price difference between the two versions isn't crazy.
on the 90's Players Choice were around too, the difference is that the boxes and labels had a golden ribbon , SNES and Game Boy games had it, and SNES games that were released before ESRB are now rated on Player's Choice versions, i have several Player's Choice SNES games
On the Xbox side of things... the Platinum Hits on the Xbox 360 looked horrendous. But in the end what matters is the game inside!
I realized after watching this, most of my dads gamecube games were Players Choice games, so its weird to think abouy how many games i never would have played if not for the massive price cut. Its a shame this went away and i can only hope they bring it back one day
The 3DS Nintendo Selects were announced like a week after I bought Ocarina of Time 3D for $40. I will never not be mad about that
I paid more and to this day I still haven’t played it 😅.
Nintendo killed Selects (Players Choice on N64) because they realised the core audience they have mostly doesn't understand/realise/care how long these games have been out for or if they are re-releases/ports or whatever, they just hold the price and let the money roll in
I feel like they should do something for the switch.
“Hey Nintendo why’d you have to make Player’s Choice so lame?”
“Well…Sir… it was… The Player’s Choice.”
“Oh no. WE did this.”
Haha yeah wouldn't it be crazy if Pikmin 3 cost 60 dollars can you imagine
honestly, nintendo land makes way more sense than wii sports cause plenty of wii u's later on *didnt* come with it, mine included (i got mk8)
Is it weird that i absolutely love the Nintendo Selects box art for all three? it just feels way more important like a celebration for the game.
I always hated the ps1 greatest hits line, with me it was with Twisted Metal, because the disc was just blank (mirrored) while the “black box” had Sweet Tooth on them.
I actually really like the silver cases the GameCube games got in Europe
I think the main grip with nintendo selects for me is the fact that (at least on 3ds) they didn't cone with the manual. This might not upset anyone, but i wish they included them nonetheless
17:06 that's interesting, my European copy of Ocarina of Time 3D from Nintendo Selects still has the emblem, i wonder if the emblems were removed in the US versions of Selects or if it was dropped with the later batches of Selects games
Scott! You should do a whole segment on Video game collections on the Switch!
another nice thing that they did for the wii u & 3ds specifically is that games that were part of nintendo selects also got their eshop prices cut to 20 bucks!
Holding a Nintendo Selects game makes me feel so special, like wow! I get a cool red border and a ribbon :D
I think in my country they were more expensive because of their fancier look
