He was killed by Earendil the Mariner, Elros and Elrond's father, during the War of Wrath at the end of the First Age. When he died, his body was so large that it landed on Thangorodrim and destroyed it. Thangorodrim were 3 volcanoes that Morgoth raised up and where he built his fortress of Angband.
While that is true, you cannot compare the Great Dragons of the First Age to the ones of the Third Age, as Smaug was the last of the Great Dragons by the Third Age, while quite smaller than Ancalagon the Black, he's still impressive in his own right.
The effects of this movie look worse than the LotR trilogy despite being made a decade later. It just never ceases to amaze me how badly they mangled The Hobbit.

I mean in the book this whole scene plays out MUCH quicker… there were actually multiple archers trying to shoot the dragon, and Bard who had barely even been name-dropped at that point, just whips open a can of whoopass and kills the dragon. The black arrow thing is in the original but has nowhere near as much buildup. If anything this movie tried really hard to CATER to jerks like you by padding the story out so much… they knew everyone would be like “that’s it? He just got downed by a random guy??” Cuz that’s literally how it happened in the book. I still fuckin hate these movies and think they ruined everything give or take a few individual scenes, but I don’t really get your “man can’t kill dragon that’s unrealistic” take, as that’s literally every single western dragon myth since the beginning of antiquity… they never DON’T get killed by some individual guy. It’s also funny that you think that aspect is unrealistic and stupid, but not the aspect where he’s using A CHILD as the shaft of a bow, something that’s meant to withstand stress and flex out of the way of the arrow as it flies forward…
