Did this too, you definitely can use mineral oil with no ill effects. Almost certain the guy who started this cool mod used olive oil. Nice watch the casio ae1200 👍
Thanks for the video. I just took my first crack at hydro modding a 1200. I went with mineral oil just to get a feel for the process. But next time I plan to use silicone on a silver one. I love how black it makes the masking

Yeah, messy for sure. Glad someone recommended these mini plastic trays to cut down on the mess.
With analogue digitals it's good to use a very low viscosity fluid. I've used cSt5 silicone fluid and it's like water. Much easier to remove bubbles and fill voids and it gives much less resistance to mechanical components. Nice result with that watch. Thanks for the video.

And appreciate the suggestion on the oil viscosity. Ive only been able to find 50 cSt silicone oil online. Whete can i find some with a cSt of 5? Thanks
the way to get the case completely filled with oil, is to attached the case while the entire thing is submerged in oil... you can after collect the remaining oil with the syringe if you wish...
The only way to totally eliminate air is to assemble totally immersed, it would work but it would be expensive because you probably wouldn’t want to use the leftover oil again
You can filter the oil and reuse it just fine. Use a syringe with a cotton ball in and push.
Vacuum chamber. Even then, there is air inside the crystal oscillator. Also, pre-wet the parts.
Using a large syringe with cotton in it, you can force the oil through the cotton and clean the oil. seen it done. it works.
.... and of course, the bubble will allow the watch to be used as a spirit level, thus adding yet another feature not found in even the most expensive watches. 😁👍
I think I’m going to try this and either soak the module in oil first or put it under really light pressure so there is no chance I’d bubbles escaping from it later on. Cool mod!
I have the same watch in the same colour and have been following the changes from previous videos .. gotta say the watch looks fantastic with negative display
The reason an oil filled watch has a higher water resistance is NOT because the oil will repel water (if water gets in, it's already not waterproof anymore), it's because liquids are non-compressible. So, when you get pressure on the outside of the watch when diving, the oil inside the watch will prevent the case, case back and crystal from deforming and eventually cracking.
This is also why, when doing this for this particular reason, you really want to avoid air bubbles in the oil. Although one or two small bubbles doesn't represent much of a problem, since the crystal and the case back will only deform equivalent to the total volume of the bubbles.
Done right, filling a relatively cheap watch like this with oil will, will increase the water resistance with several hundred meters.

Iv hydro modded 2 of my Casio's both using cheap mineral oil, there both doing great after 14 months. I don't know why, but finding 50cst silicone oil is really hard in Australia, even after finding it, its stupid expensive. I personally believe mineral oil is completely harmless, like I said after a year both watches are working great, keeping time and there's zero damage.
Yeah, silicone oil is pricey, and usually the lower viscosity oils are harder to find and more expensive.
For digital watches, just use higher viscosity cheaper oil since theyre no moving parts in a watch (so not a big deal if the oil is thicker). For mechanical watches, use less viscous oil (like 10 cSt)
What about baby oil?
This is going to sound really dodgy, but there are plenty of, shall we say, "erotic" pure silicon oils that are suitable for this purpose and are really pretty cheap.

Is it possible to do the negative to positive mod to the solar quartz King of G (GXW-56BB-1JF), (maybe also including the luminescent filter, too) and would it affect the solar charging?

It mainly increases water resistance by removing air, which is compressible. Sinn produce watches that are water resistant to the deepest parts of the world's oceans, just by filling them with oil. Obviously only their quartz watches. They do stop working at around 5000m due to the fact that the crystal oscillator contained within stops working due to compression, but restart when come shallower than 5000m.

I've been thinking about trying this on one of my AE1200s for a while, but for some reason, I never get around to doing it. Maybe someday lol, but I'd definitely want to convert one of them to negative before I did this, which is something else I've been meaning to do for a long time now. I've only ever done one negative conversion so far, on a DW-5600E, and that came out amazingly well, so I feel pretty confident about being able to do it correctly on the first take again. Except I would want to leave the small analog alone. I think. Does converting it to negative it make the small analog any easier to see? Any worse?
About putting the cover back on... What about having the whole watch completely submerged the entire time while re-installing the cover? Or is it too difficult to work with trying to get the screws in place and started to threading them in? And where do you even get silicone oil in the first place? What kind of applications does it have? And lastly,,, I know that it would still work just the same, but would I notice any difference in hydro-modding a G-Shock GW-B5600, or is this mod mainly about bringing out the small print on the masking and turning that dull black into a high gloss?
So:
-converting to negative display can make it harder to read than positive display. And for the analog clock, it would make it more difficult too. It's still easy to read in my opinion, but positive is just a tad easier.
-having the whole watch submerged when hydromodding would be best. But 100% silicone oil is expensove, and thus doing a submerged install would be expensive
-silicone oil can be found on Amazon. Here, i used Microlubrol 50 cSt 4 oz bottle off Amazon for $13ish
-im sure a few applications for silicone oil exist. Just google it.
-and for the Casio GW-B5600, youd have to find oit if thats a standard negative display, or MIP display. I wouldnt hydromod a MIP as it's already super crisp. But if it's a standard negative display, the silicome oil would make the numerals crisper and easier to read

Since this is a digital watch without any moving parts, the oil wont affect the battery life or precision. But it will make battery changes messier, and youll have to replace the oil lost when changing the battery

Good question. 2 years in and no oil leaks from the pushers or caseback, even after pushing on them.
.theyre little o-rings in the pushers too, so that helps

I have two concerns when it comes to this mod:
1. Longevity, don't a lot of oils eat away at the plastic/resin components? Is there any oils that doesn't do that?
2. Battery replacement, I don't having to do the process again but damn.
Both valid concerns. As long as you use 100%silicone oil (no mineral or anything else), it wont eat away at the plastic or resin. This is the same type of oil the professional watch company U-boat uses in some of their hydromod watches.
But the battery change (every 10 years for this watch) will definitely be a pain. The oil itself will not consume more battery than a standard non-oiled world time
I'm still unsure what to order for the negative display filter...and is it absolutely necessary to remove the original filter on the module? or can the negative filter be placed on top of the module?
I cover these questions in my other mod videos, where i show all the steps to convert to negative display. So i recommend checking out those👍
But to your question, Yes, you have to remove the original polarizing film on the module, use a brand new polarizing film, and orient it 90 degrees to the left or right to get the negative display effect.

I've seen a guy fill up the plastic container with the fluid to almost full. Not just the watch case. Then put the case back on. To keep the air out.
I was surprised he didn't mention that. It's a no brainer.

Good question. It still beeps.
FYI, when in the main time mode, if youre looking at the front of the watch, and push and hold down the bottom left button for 5 seconds, the beep becomes silent. Repeat again, and the beep comes back
Further question, how's it volume..? Did it less or same as before?

Does this process need to be redone when changing the battery?
Yes. Oil will leak out when u change the battery. So best to install a new battery first before hydromodding. Then u should be good for appx 10 years (or less if u use ur stopwatch and backlight more frequently)

Theres no engine or moving parts in a digital watch.
Ive had mine like this for over one year now with no problems.
However, it does make battery changes messy as u have to replace the oil. But that only happens every 10 years or so 👍
