    Allegory.
    Midlife Crisis.
    Entire Cornetto Trilogy = meta-allegory
    Shaun of the Dead -> struggles during early career
    Hot Fuzz -> obstacles during career high, peak success, hypercompetence
    The World’s End -> end of career, mid-life crisis

    Sci-fi horror allegory about Gen X mid-life crisis, the past ~30 years of Starbuckization/Walmartization of society and nostalgia's diminishing returns.

  • @GarrettJayChristian
    @GarrettJayChristian 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +95

    Hot Fuzz perfected the techniques, but World's End used them to say something; this one is my favorite of the Cornetto trilogy, and I appreciate that Stella picked up on the fact that Gary was doing this as a send-off for being sick, just not physiologically sick. He brought no luggage. 😢
    Edit: Sorry, it was Hayley that picked that up.

  • @kinokind293
    @kinokind293 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +34

    I am impressed! You guys tumbled to Gary's problems much earlier than most reactors watching the film. Gary's on a suicide mission and the pub crawl is his version of a last meal. One could argue that the film is a tragedy except for Gary's last minute redemption. Of course it cost the whole world for him to save himself - and the world.

    • @carlalussini
      @carlalussini 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      He didn't save himself; he might have stopped drinking, but he still had an addiction to romanticize the past to the point of not being able to have a functional life

    • @pandyssianrat
      @pandyssianrat 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@carlalussini I think he just wants to do right this time. He hurt his friends a lot in the past, now he uses their "blanks" to redeem himself in some way. They were stranded here due to him so he probably thinks it's his responsibility to help them live now.

    • @sarahnadeofpoetry
      @sarahnadeofpoetry 22 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@carlalussini I would say it's somewhat functional now that he has the purpose of being a sort of pirate king, if you will, just in the sense that he's living a nomadic life of adventure, but with the blanks he took in along the way, as pandyssianrat pointed out. It's sort of brilliant in a way, because clearly, regular society was the square to his round hole. Now the attempt to take his own life has led to a chain reaction ultimately resulting in a circle society for his round hole to fill in at last. The puzzle is finally whole and complete. It's honestly quite beautiful in that sense. A phoenix tale.

    My personal favorite of the trilogy. World's End was a surprise when i first watched it & it's so inspired. People diss on it simply cause it's the newest. It had the best twists, best plot, best characterization. I mean Gary is such a real person. I know people very fucking similar. And the way the guys react to his antics is so true to life.
    I just love this movie, great reaction

  • @robcoz98

    Gary's story becomes a little darker as recently Simon Pegg has come out with his own experience with alcoholism and mental health struggles which makes his performance more heartbreaking towards the end. I believe he was in the process of getting sober around the time of filming this and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.
    Me and my best friend were too young to watch this in the cinema when this came out back in 2013 however I recall getting the blu-ray once it got released on home video and laughing all the way through. It wasn't my favourite at first but growing up and learning more about mental health and having my own 'golden mile', I believe The World's End ever so slightly beats Hot Fuzz on a good day in my book.

    technically hayley is right, gary is sick (addiction is a sickness, so is depression), and it's very subtly implied he'd probably off himself after finishing the golden mile. This movie is so sad and gary is such a good character.

      Yeah, that's why in the pub fight when Gary said to Andy "twist the melon, man" and Gary and Andy's reaction after taking off the robot's head were like "hell yeah" and both went back to being for a little second the wild and young guys who once were, that part is amazing but also very very sad because of that feeling of can't being that young man who say and act like that again when you get older 💔

  • @markjones127

    The depiction of a teenage lads 80's pub crawl is sadly quite accurate, back then they'd start at 16 if you had pubs that would serve you but by 17/18 there was always a few bars and even clubs where you knew you could get served even if you looked young, and then you'd start as a large group and get whittled down and scattered during the events of the evening, the next day was largely made up of conversations trying to work out what happened to who the night before and where they ended up, I'm the same age as Simon Pegg and and woke up in some strange places at that time, in a telephone box, church, on a roundabout and actually inside a town hall with little recollection of how I got there.

    Hot Fuzz is my favorite of the three. I didn't get The World's End on the first watch but liked it better on a second watch and after thinking about it more. Knowing Gary's deal from the very beginning makes it a nearly different movie. Plus, there's the usual Cornetto thing of seeing the many, many bits of foreshadowing on the next watches.
    I graduated high school in 1991 and was a goth and Sisters of Mercy fan, and there are some bits in the movie that hit different for goths and SoM fans.

    The monologue Gary does at the beginning where he describes the original pub crawl when they were kids - it basically describes what happens to them when they do the crawl as adults. O-Man disappearing at one of the pubs, Sam showing up and going into the bathroom with Gary, how it ends with them sitting on a hill under a red sky looking at the town, etc. It's really well written and works for both versions of the crawl.

    I'm biased to liking zombies, but Hot Fuzz is my personal favorite. I don't mind depressing downer elements in movies, but Hot Fuzz is an air-tight script, a well crafted mystery and excellently handled action that perfectly pays tribute to its action movie roots. I appreciate the nod to Hong Kong action films that The World's End does, and I'm not opposed to beating the final logical boss with words, but I feel like the final conversation wasn't handled very well.

They came closest to catching the vibe of a bunch of house sharing pennyless 90s stoners with that, and continued with the emblem of that through the movies... I got to see "Shaun of the Dead" months before it came out in the States and, as a big fan of the original "Dawn of the Dead" and other zombie films, and as a huge Anglophile and lover of British comedies/films, I was absolutely gobsmacked at SotD. Out of the trilogy, it's still my favorite although I agree that "Hot Fuzz" is the better film between the first two in the 'trilogy'. This film took me a little while to fully warm up to as its tone was darker, but I really like it now and know it's importance to Simon Pegg as it really dealt with his alchoholism so he put a lot into the script dealing with that. If you want to see Simon & Nick's first project together, which Edgar Wright directed and where the idea for SotD first came about, watch the British TV series "Spaced". So many actors from that series reappeared in all the Cornetto Trilogy films, especially SotD, but all the way through this film, as well. SotD has a load of Easter Eggs in it just calling back to "Spaced" and it's a really fun series and you can really see Edgar's style develop over the 2 seasons. Your reactions were great and I'm so glad you two continued with your own reaction channel.

    Glad you guys finished the series of movies. Hot Fuzz it's my favorite of the three. I can see what you mean about the Blanks being more frightening then Zombies cuz they have a goal to seek out the group and they look normal still the idea that a corpse of those you love is chasing you is upsetting but then again hearing what happens to the Empties isn't any better. The huge twist in this is jarring at first but also fun, the energy picks up.

    Shaun of the Dead is my favorite because it was the first I watched and watched a dozen times and memorized and as a horror-fan loved all the homages.
    Hot Fuzz is my favorite because it's fucking hilarious. By far the funniest movie of the trio.
    The World's End is my favorite because it's grown on me the most on rewatches and it has real emotional depth to it.
    So there.

    Glad to see you two finishing up this trilogy! Also, this is probably 3rd in the trilogy for many people but, to me, it's the most mature (obviously) story with the biggest journey, at least for Gary. There's a lot sadness and trauma here (again, obviously) than the others and it speaks to me the most. And taking all that, it's still really fun, clever, and funny.

    My favourite is always Hot Fuzz, but has as been said earlier, Paul is well worth a watch even if not directed by Edgar.

    I wonder if this film was, in some way, therapeutic for Simon Pegg, because he suffered depression.

    You’ll be hard pressed to find many that put this as their favourite of the trilogy. For most, including me, I think it’s Hot Fuzz, Shaun then this one

    You guys should watch Society of the Snow. It’s an incredible film, can be very dark and emotional at times, but overall it’s an amazing film.
