4:10 the other thing about Danny is how FAST he picks up things from Angel. He VERY quickly adopts better terminology and procedure. It's like he's just been lacking a proper actual mentor....

Yeah, it's very clear that his dad has neglected what would otherwise be a great policeman officer, making the 'comedic sidekick' an actually capable and respectable character instead of a joke on two legs.

It was so expensive because they had to license every film shown in Andy’s library as well as the rights to both Point Break and Bad Boys II, as well of the likenesses of all the people in those clips, including a stunt double from the Point Break clip. Once you realise how many films are visible it’s pretty understandable that those scenes were so expensive

I've always just loved how this movie shifts genres, from a simple fish-out-of-water comedy to an incredibly bloody, Wicker Man-ish horror-comedy to a gleefully OTT parody of the shoot-em-up action movies it's been talking about for its whole running time, while telling a coherent story with consistent characters.

  • @catfish552
    @catfish552 4 ปีที่แล้ว +127

Another perspective on this film that I don't think a lot of people see: It takes British small-town crime drama and smashes it headfirst into Hollywood action films, buddy cop movies, and slasher horror. "Big police action flick in a small town" is already a funny premise - but a in addition it's sending shows like Midsomer Murders, which was running for ten years at that point (and is still going today): The idea of that much violent crime in rural England is pretty amusing already. Putting a brutal murder conspiracy in that same setting makes it fucking hilarious.
Bonus fun fact about Detectives Wainwright and Cartwright: Those names mean almost exactly the same thing.

One of my favorite BTS bits is how Edgar Wright explains that in the scene when Angel and Skinner meet while jogging, the original take didn't match the storyboards so they reshot it, but then when editing, they realized that in the original take, Dalton kept moving into the center of the frame and shoving Pegg off to the side, and that made Skinner seem subtly threatening so that's the take they ended up using. Just so much care and detail in this movie.

      We have many _many_ flaws.
However, everybody and their mum bang on about those. Constantly. John Oliver's a funny guy but he'll never day anything good about England.
And that's OK, I do the opposite.
We invented three modern police force, through the Peelian Principles.

They are allowed to police us only but our consent. Which we can withdraw at any time.
That's why they are not armed, it's part of the contract.
That's why they are polite and are supposed to strictly follow the code, _it's part of the contract_
We are proud of this, proud of them.
Their strength is a reflection of our strength. Angel is the what we strive for all our officers to be.

(I was going to say I love your shit, but your videos have made me feel a little artsy-fartsy) - I have seen most of them, and, in particular, the one where you talk about all the things you have gone through. Something I said to a girl going through a hard time a long time ago, "You don't realize the impact you have on people, the smallest thing can improve someone's life immeasurably. A smile to someone who hasn't received one in days, a compliment on a purse, a moment to listen when someone needs it." - You have that quality, though you may feel down and struggle, realize how much you bring to people, the quality of your productions, and your insight, are glorious. There is a saying, that the dead hear our prayers, and loving thoughts of them, as music. Stay alive and hear the music of your fans, and thrive.

It immediately became my favourite movie ever! I watched the whole thing with a huge grin on my face, my mate didn't fully understand why I loved it so much but I don't care. I watch this movie once a year easily and have seen it probably 20+ times (and pick up on new things each time). As soon as I got home after watching the movie I told my parents how good it was and to rent it as soon as it came out on DVD. Shortly after watching it on rental, Dad bought it.

YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAHHH, Roy!!!!! Thank you for this excellent dissection of one of the best films ever, ever, ever. There is so much in Hot Fuzz that has become part of my wife an my lexicon ("Judge Judy Executioner", "Narp?", "Pttttttttpht! Jog on!"). We shared it with our teenage daughter earlier this year so I could geek out with her about all the cool story conventions the film uses, jump cuts to give a full narrative, foreshadowing and payoff... GAAAAAAAA!!!! Just so much love, so thanks! (Also, 10 Cloverfield Lane is wonderful and I look forward to your discussion of it!)

Another fantastic dissection of one of my favourite movies, having grown up in the same strange corner of the UK as Messrs Wright and Pegg the whole vibe of Sandford and it's inhabitants was spot on and maybe even toned down
Keep up the good work, also another vote for Trainspotting 2 to get the MwM treatment, if it wasn't for Logan, it would be my movie of the year (BR2049 might edge it but that needs a lot of watching before I can truly call it)

I honestly feel all of Edgar Wright's films get better with every rewatch. I feel the same for Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, At World's End, Scott Pilgrim, and Baby Driver. Though I've only seen Baby Driver and At World's End once so far, so I need to rewatch them to make sure of that one.

I still remember the day my friend brought over the DVD and we watched in my dorm room on my computer. This will always be a TOP 10 movie for me the same as it is for you. This movie delivers on every second of the film. I still love the quick time lapse edits that connect in one fluid motion to quickly convey where the characters are going with out showing nonsense.

The only problem with _Hot Fuzz_ is the title.
Whenever I sit someone down to watch it, they're always shocked that it wasn't some straight-to-comedy-central B-movie since the title's so... mis-match-y.

Yeah, it's a suprisingly prominent issue I've also dealt with as an Edgar Wright fan... His titles are off-putting to many audiences. Not just Hot Fuzz, but films like Baby Driver and Shaun of the Dead. Loads of people seemed instantly disinterested when I first told them those titles.

It's a great film. One of the things I love is that the parody of OTT shoot-em-ups never devolves into sneering superiority or contempt. Every cliche and call back is engineered to fit the story and the characters perfectly. It's a genuine, heart-felt love letter to the 80s action genre and made with such obvious glee by all involved, it shines through. My favourite of the trilogy by far.
