Less about the hospital tags and the bandages around his wrists, his plan was to do the golden mile and then die. He references it once or twice early on, he did not want to live sober and lost everything drunk so he wanted one last night with his friends.

This one is honestly of my favourite from the trilogy. I just love Gary King's story. The friendships here are so emotional. It's a lot more clever than people often give it credit for, e.g., the beginning montage of the gang younger being the exact plot of the actual film. I love the slower pace, and focus on relationships and mental health. The foreshadowing and hidden details are prevalent as ever as with any other Cornetto trilogy film too. But I love the subtedly of this one.

This is by far the most personally affecting movie of the trilogy for me. I first saw it 6 years ago when I'd already been struggling with depression for years, and as the years have gone by I've found myself relying on alcohol a lot to fill the void. Along with an unwillingness/inability to grow up Gary really feels like a warning to me, of who I could become if I'm not careful, so even though it's not a horror movie it's by far the most terrifying movie of the trilogy by a (Golden) mile

  • @mots503

The sentry is an homage to the giant robot, Gort, from the movie, “The Day the Earth Stood Still”, from 1951 - whose plot has been partly borrowed by this movie.
Gary didn’t want to show his arms because they are both bandaged - presumably covering fresh wounds - which could explain his appearance at a group session in the beginning of the movie.

    • @rsrt6910
      @rsrt6910 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Gary "attempted" suicide.
An attempt is usually a cry for help and the fact that Gary cut his wrists meant he was fully on board with it.
But if you re-watch the beginning, you can see the exact moment that Gary transitions from "crying for help" to ACTUALLY becoming suicidal.
It's when one of the other members asks him if he misses not finishing the Golden Mile, Gary and you can see Gary's face light up as he transitions from depression to relief, because he finally has the answer to his problem, finish the Golden Mile and die at it's completion.

The Famous Cock = Gary gets barred for life
Crossed Hands = The gang gets into a fight with a bunch of blanks
Good Companion = The gang drink a pint peacefully
Trusty Servant = We meet three humans that are serving The Network
2 Headed Dog = Gary and Steve fight the twins
Mermaid = The Gang make out with the "marmalaid sandwich"

King's Head = Gary is the only one that drinks
Hole in the Wall = Steven drives "The Beast" through the front wall
and we all know what happens at The World's End.

One of my favorite bits of the movie: the song that plays over the end of the movie is "This Corrosion" by Sisters of Mercy, the band whose t-shirt Gary is still wearing and who were immensely popular in the UK (and among some groups in the US) in the late 80s/early 90s. So essentially, that was the soundtrack which would be playing in Gary's mind as he makes his stand against the aliens.

Here's some cool little details if you decided to ever rewatch the movie:
The entire beginning dialogue at the start about the original night is the same plot as the rest of the movie. Rewatch the starting scene with the knowledge of how the rest of the film plays out, it would be fun
All the pubs have story related meaning. "The First Post" is the first pub which is easy, "The Old Familiar" looks the same as the first pub and Sam (Olivers sister) comes into the pub to see the guys, "The Famous Cock" is the pub where Gary King is finally recognized because he was barred hence his title as The Famous Cock, "The Crossed Hands" is the bar where they fight the blanks and crossing hands is a way to say fighting, "The Good Companions" is the pub in which the guys all act like they are good normal friends, "The Trusty Servant" is a reference to The Reverend Green (Trevor) who works for the Network, "Two Headed-Dog" is the pub where they they fight the twins, "The Mermaid" pub has a sign with 3 mermaids who have the same hair as the Marmalade Sandwhich and its the bar with the MS, "The Beehive" is the pub where they fight a swarm of blanks, "The Kings Head" has a sign which resembles Gary King hence the kings head, "The Hole In The Wall" is the pub where Steve crashes through the wall, "The Worlds End" is pretty self evident
When Basil tells Steve about the blanks plan, he mentions that they arrived on earth on June The 22nd 1990 and it was the shooting star, well the original pub crawl night at the start of the movie was June 22nd 1990 and when Gary says that him, Andy & Steve blew off the final 3 pubs and went to the hills, Gary stares off into the distance and in the upper left side of the screen in the sky, you can see a shooting star falling
Near the start when the 5 all get together in the beast after reuniting, Gary says its the 5 Musketeers and they argue over which number it is and Gary says "I think they missed a trick only having 3 because with 5, 2 couldve died and theyd still have 3 left" which foreshadows how they start with 5 but lose Oliver & Pete.
There are plenty more I didnt mention, I suggest you watch a video on all 3 Cornetto Films that list all the small details some might miss

One of the things I enjoy about this one is that we _finally_ got Mint, which is _clearly_ the king (if you will :) of Cornetto flavours.
And despite SotD featuring a zombie apocalypse and 'Hot Fuzz' featuring multiple gory serial murders i'd say that _this_ is the most serious of the three. Gary's a pretty sad character but all too recognisable and although i'd say he's _somewhat_ vindicated by the ending, he still doesn't really grow-up.

On the surface this is a fun film. But on rewatches you realise that it's a pretty dark film. With Gary King being a more complicated and troubled character than we once thought. The fact he doesn't have any luggage with him is a subtle but big clue. Knowing how these films are written their is plenty of foreshadowing, plot spoilers and callbacks. It truly is a joy rewatching and seeing everything that was missed on first or even second viewing. Like the title of the film The World's End, such a genius title. Not only did the world end, but you realise that Gary was going to end his story at the worlds end. The line "It's all Iv'e got" is just heartbreaking. Then the reveal of his wrist bandages is a sobering moment. The penny drops and the dark reality of Gary Kings life is revealed. Then realising that the meeting at the beginning wasn't an AA meeting at all, but something a lot more serious. I love this trilogy and this film. They all are my favourite for different reasons. The World's End doesn't get enough credit. It may not have the same style but has everything the others do with a much adult theme.

After all this time I like this one of the three best. It's a tragedy wrapped around a comedy. On second viewing it's apparent that Gary is in some kind of rehab/mental hospital and decides to go on a suicide mission. He's going to relive the best night of his life and then kill himself. By the last scene in The World's End pub, we can see that he's already attempted suicide at least once. He's a terribly sad, broken person. It is only the events of the film that save him. That said, it's also a wonderfully imaginative comedy. But these days I can't help but see it for what it really is: A tragedy. But one with a happy ending. Thank you Messrs. Pegg and Wright.

    Great reaction Vero!
If you want a more serious version of the same kind of plot, check out Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) with Jeff Goldblum, Leonard Nimoy, and Donald Sutherland.
Also, since you seem to be a fan of Martin Freeman I highly recommend watching the first season of Fargo. Actually, all of the seasons but the fourth are worth watching but Freeman's only in the first season. Watch the movie of the same name first if you haven't seen it yet as there are some small connections in the first season to the film.

I do like serious movies :D I've heard the title "Fargo" but that's the extent of my knowledge. I've been meaning to check it out, and now that I know that Martin Freeman is in it, I definitely will

This is my favorite of the trilogy. Hot fuzz is funnier, and Shawn of the Dead is also good, but the heart of this one is so great. Gary had been watching his life get worse and worse ever since that night, and seeing his breakdown is so beautifully portrayed. And while it is not the funniest, it definitely has plenty of laughs.

If you ever want to venture into another Simon Pegg & Nick Frost movie, may i suggest the 2011 Sci-fi/Comedy (PAUL). Also another Simon Pegg movie not many know about is the 2007 film (Run Fatboy Run).

Shaun of the Dead is fine, i just don't like zombies as a concept
Hot Fuzz is clearly the tightest written of the three and Nick Frost is in top form with his deliveries
Worlds End is fine, but it's my favorite for the first half an hour.

I just ended up feeling really bad for Simon Pegg's character in this. Not like empathy or anything, because he sucked and was a genuinely sh*tty friend, just felt bad because what a sad state to be in. To just be stagnant all those year's

I hadn't seen this since it was in theaters, and watching your reaction reminded me why. It's still funny, and has some heartwarming moments focused arounda group of friends, which was a nice change of pace, but it's kind of a chaotic watch. And putting aside what we learn later, Gary is just incredibly unlikable in a way that other protagonists in the trilogy hadn't been before, which I do have to give them credit for. The movie's influences also aren't as obvious as the other two, I guess it's sort of an Invasion of the Body Snatchers type of sci-fi which then concludes with a Mad Max epilogue? Just doesn't feel totally coherent for me

I love the trilogy and this one's gone up a lot in my estimation, I think it gains more resonance as you get older. All these stand up to constant rewatches as you keep spotting new things, that's the genius of Edgar Wright for you! Paul is good but he's not involved. You can see his work in Antman (though he was booted-off after much work) and 'Baby Driver' is great, too. 'Scott Pilgrim-' didn't chime with me as I'm not a gamer. Hope he does something else soon, we need him...

Verowak, you need to check out Jim Carrey and react to his movies… he’s one of the biggest comedic stars ever. His movies are Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, Dumb & Dumber, Liar Liar and Ace Ventura has a sequel the subtitle is “When Nature Calls.” He also has dramatic movies too… the Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
