  • For the first time, Andrew & Hayley react to one of Edgar Wright's (Last Night in Soho & Baby Driver) best comedy films, Hot Fuzz, a movie about two cops (played by Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead & Mission Impossible: Fallout) & Nick Frost (The World's End & Paul), who investigate the gruesome murders that take place in their West Country village.
    This film also stars: Timothy Dalton (Licence to Kill & Penny Dreadful) & Jim Broadbent (Paddington & Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince)

    I love the layers of Danny's character. He's not the terrible cop he seems to be at first. He's just had horrible role models his entire career. Once Angel shows up and takes him under his wing, he proves that he's actually pretty capable as a cop.

    This film is incredible. Everything from the setup comes back, with the exception of a single thing - Nicholas's skills at advanced cycling.

  • @rdevries3852
    @rdevries3852 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +78

    This movie really does have a stacked cast. Even for some very brief cameos in which the actors aren't even recognizable. Notably, the "Father Christmas" who stabs Nicholas in the opening montage is played by Peter Jackson and Nicholas' ex-girlfriend is played by Cate Blanchett, fully concealed by hooded disposable coveralls and a face mask.

    • @Knight-Bishop
      @Knight-Bishop 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      I'll toss in Mr. Weaver, played by Edward Woodward, the lead in the original Wicker Man and the original Equalizer. He's probably the least recognizable.

    Apparently there was supposed to be a romance arc for Simon Pegg's character but they axed it and gave some of the woman's lines to Nick Frost's character. Which, if you didn't know, you can kind of feel. It adds to them getting close as friends. But upon re-watch, it's even more funny and genius and heartwarming knowing they were supposed to be from Pegg's lover, which Frost is essentially in this film (in a platonic, bro love way).
    EDIT: Also, bold move to watch the Cornetto Trilogy in reverse order. LMAO.

    This is a serious contender for my all-time favorite comedy. It has such great writing, so many little details, and cleverly plays with action movie cliches. "He's NOT Judge Judy and executioner!" is forever burned into my memory. Also, one of most interesting aspects is that the movie was filmed in Wells, which is Edgar Wright's home town. That whole chase sequence with the shoplifter was filmed in the area that Wright walked to and from school as a kid.

    While 'Shaun of the Dead' is my favorite of the 'Cornetto Trilogy' (and my all-time favorite zombie film, or a ZomRomCom, as they call it), this is definitely the best. And if you haven't seen 'Baby Driver' directed by Edgar Wright, it's just so good and you would love it, but it's very music heavy so there is some work getting around that for YT. So many great actors as the NWA in 'Hot Fuzz' that appeared in other great films, such as "The Wicker Man", "The Omen", "Raiders of the Lost Ark", etc. And it's funny to me, as a non-Harry Potter person, that you know a lot of the actors from those films, but not from other great films they've done. Great reactions though, but now do 'Shaun of the Dead' fast while it's still spooky season!

      in addition the "Oh God, no..." has to be a callback to the last line of Edward Woodwards in Wicker Man.
      But my favourite touch (of many) is that the two desk sargeants are both played by comedian Bill Bailey with different wigs. Also both are reading books by Iain Banks, but of different genres. Ding ding ding! There was supposed to be a love interest but they cut her out and gave her lines to Danny, which is why their friendship feels romantic even if it doesn't. Nick's ex (cameo by Cate Blanchett) alludes to the fact that Nick doesn't take anything except policing seriously. which is why him becoming friends with Danny is significant as a love interest in your usual cop movie.

    Every one recognises the other actors that are in Harry Potter, Game of Thrones and James Bond etc, but nobody knows about Edward Woodward that plays the head of the NWA. He was made famous in the ‘Wicker Man’ a film about how a policeman is sent to a remote island to investigate people going missing. The population practice paganism and are all in a cult, the ending had a giant wicker man that is set on fire with a sacrificial person inside - if you’ve been to Alton Towers in the UK and ridden the rollercoaster of the same name, then the visual introduction is based on that film. Not wishing to give the ending away, (but I will), his last sentence in that film is also ‘Oh God no!’
    Anyway, he made his name in that film and went on to be the lead roll in a 1970 tv show that been made in a recent 3 part film. Yes he is the original Equalizer!

    Simon Peg and Nick Frost are close friends and used to be room mates. They started out togather with a fun little british TV Serious called Spaced, also directed by Edgar Wright (2 seasons with 7 30 minutes episodes), that is real fun, too. It had quite a lot of similarities to Hot Fuzz, especially in its meta qualities. Spaced went so far, to actually having a Homagometer as a subtitle option, that tells you the refferences... and there where A LOT. There was an american remake of that, that sucked, by all accounts. I would love if you could check that out.

    Shaun of the Dead is one of the best zombie movies, again great writing and editing ... it knows what it's doing both as comedy and drama/horror
    It also has its comically gory moments - as you would expect in any good zombie movie

    So, you have now seen number two (Hot Fuzz) and number three (End of the World) of the Cornetto trilogy, you need to see number one (Shaun of the Dead). Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have been best friends for years. You also need to watch Baby Driver

    A lot of what you say about this film also applies to Shaun of the Dead - but instead of 'buddy cop' movies it plays on the tropes of zombie horror films (old style zombie films, with slow moving zombies) - again with a good story, engaging character arcs and well written comedy. I love both SOTD & Hot Fuzz - they're both essential films for me. SOTD isn't quite as 'snappily' paced as Hot Fuzz - it was Edgar Wright's first film - but it's probably my favourite of the two. I never really liked The World's End very much - it was technically good, but I thought it lacked some of the heart and soul of its two predecessors - but it has its admirers and maybe I need to watch it again and give it another go. Anyway, loved the reaction and hearing your thoughts. Very impressive that Hayley totally called what was going on so early in the film!

      @CxOrillion 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Go back and watch the World's End again. I didn't like it much at first, but I've seen it several times now and it really does age well. It's got a whole lot more heart and soul in my opinion than either SOTD or HF. HF is still my favorite, and it'd consider it one of the most compositionally perfect films ever made. But I slept on World's End at first too and it's SO much better than i initially gave it credit for. The movie changes entirely once you have seen it and know the truth of Gary.

    • @Whitestripe71
      @Whitestripe71 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@CxOrillion I think I will give it another go. I don't believe for a moment I'll ever rate it as highly as SOTD or HF, but I do suspect it's a better film than I thought it was when I first saw it. When I first saw Hot Fuzz, I liked it, but didn't love it - it's grown on me more and more over time, and now I agree with you that it's a damn near perfect film - so maybe The World's End might grow on me in a similar way. I will watch it again.
