Recently, GoldenEye's oldest speedrunning exploit was revamped when a new way to 'warp' was discovered. This is truly shocking, as in hindsight it was a really simple and obvious idea. Today we learn a bit about the history of 'warping' in GoldenEye, and the new technique that was uncovered.

Karl, the R-lean trick to get up Aztec trench (as well as to get back into bathroom vents in Facility) originated on game hacking forums in the late 90's and was submitted to Electronic Gaming Monthly who printed an article on it if I recall correctly. R-Lean was known pretty quickly after GoldenEye 007 was released, that is probably where you learned it from.

I've actually had similar experiences in World of Warcraft. Priests are able to solo Dire Maul (North) and I had eventually built up a meta and my own rhythm for clearing it efficiently.
But this had basically blinded me to other possibilities. After all, the meta was settled, right? I'd waste time experimenting when I just wanted to complete the run quickly for its loot.
So I showed other priests how to do it, and because they were new, they were far more willing to experiment while learning, discovering new tricks to make the runs faster in the process. I of course incorporated those tricks into my own runs

If I had a nickel for every time, this year alone, people found a cut in a 10+ year old game that in hindsight was considered incredibly obvious, but still took at minimum a decade to find, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it's happened twice.

Now that I think about it, how many 10+ year old games have active speedrunning communities? Part of me thinks that the more there are the more likely stuff like this will be found, but then again that would be splitting the speed running community. Furthermore, larger communities in the past probably means more bugs/strategies found years ago.

This reminds me of a glitch I found playing The Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. When you lean to the right your head can clip through walls allowing you to see through walls. That by itself is not that useful, but at least allows you to see enemies more than just around corners.
Now, near the end of the game you're also in a cell, trapped and stripped of all your weapons, you're supposed to crouch and squeeze through a gap then go around a bunch of places until you reach the place where your weapons are stored, because even while they're next to your cell the door is locked from the other side... So, you lean to the side clipping your head through the door and interact with the lock, opening that door much faster.

Note: in SM64, Mario wall checks are done 4 times per frame. So each frame has 4 quarter steps, and mario needs 4 times more speed to clip a wall in a q-step. Walls are 100 to 141.4 units wide so 400 to 565.6 spd is needed. (More may be needed depending on circumstances.)

I feel like things like this tend to happen to older and more optimized speed run communities. Because almost every trick has been found, there’s no reason to be one of the people who looks for new tricks. Whereas when a game just released, like Mario odyssey when it came out, almost half of the speed run community are looking for any minor optimization they can find.
