He lost it to some dude who played a very obscure game and got first in everything by default. I don't find his cheated times as bad as those using GameShark codes to get the time, as the ones he used were the manually input in game cheats.

Hey it's me, D1rty Dan from the F-Zero X clip.
Thank you for featuring me on your videos :).
I played X on the PAL version back in the days and way too many people claimed to have better times, but they were NTSC times every single time.
Even nowadays many ppl claim to have faster times, but they played on NTSC version compared to my PAL times.
We had a calculation method to simply multiply PAL times by 1,2 or divide NTSC times by 1,2.
    Timewise this was accurate.
The X community afterwards found out some differences in the versions though, which are enough to make the runs differ from PAL to NTSC too much, to make them comparable, even when calculating the pure time.
NTSC and PAL versions are now their own category, but I can't even count how many ppl claimed and still claim faster times having the NTSC version.
On almost any PAL WR video you can find a "I got a better time than you" comment.

To be fair, the rules weren't standardized in ANY way back then. You could argue that since they were built into the cartridge it was more of an exploit than a cheat. I think its awesome how speed running evolved to contain multiple categories to make the competition fair, like what system you're playing on or if you're using glitches, exploits, or in-game cheats.

I remember playing Turok Evolution with my little bro on PS2. He loved playing bloodbath mode which gave you access to every gun with unlimited ammo, even the ones that auto locked on through walls. It was a busted game mode that I hated because there was no skill involved. When I would complain to my parents they just said it wasn't cheating if it was part of the game... True, but it wasn't fun... My Bro did nothing wrong, he just enjoyed the fact that he could get a win on me with such a level (albeit simple) playing field.

Great video as always Karl, good sense of humour with this one. The magazine score pages in the 90s were full of suspect scores and times as you say. Trust us when we tell you those Trident pads were rubbish and broke really easy so you would have been disappointed if you had got one, it may have been that the magazine didn't want to ship the controller out to Australia sadly. We covered the changes between 59.94Hz NTSC and PAL 50hz for totally unoptimised games the NTSC titles are around 16.58% faster. Often on PAL racing games they would only optimise the timer clock. so the timer would be real time same as the NTSC version, but not the game speed, hence why you got slower race/lap times. It really depends if the game was built and properly optimised for PAL or not, the subject does get quite complex. One point as a speed runner you might like to know, some optimised PAL titles when forced into NTSC output will run at a turbo speed faster than the NTSC version.

When Golden Eye was a couple of years old I was still lightly playing it. Then over the summer break in Mexico my two cousins, my bro and myself decided to beat GoldenEye 100%. We all shared the controller. It was a 4-5 week grind. By the end it was Cradle and Facility and both had to be finished super fast on 00 agent. By that time it was just my cousin and me. I managed to beat Facility after grinding out the strat. When I started on Cradle it was maddening. My cousin left. I sat there by myself feeling like a crazy person for keeping the grind going. When I finally beat Cradle I sat there in silence by myself in awe of what we had done. I think that was my all time favorite gaming moment. It unlocked some cool cheats and it showed the times on the mission folders. I could see in the time how much fun and work went into it where others will only see a number.
