The question everyone really wants to know though, is this: What was your time on making this video including all the times you cracked up and had to redo the take?
"you know billy Mitchell? World video game champion? I bet he could do it. I need a way to harness his power, and I think I found a way. That's right we're gonna cheat"
There is no shortcut to being a man. Hoping you found your way without outside pressure. Either way, the sense of freedom you must feel.... Embrace the hate that comes with it; this is what doing the right thing feels like. I dont think anyone needs a reminder on why people lie/cheat/steal (just watch a Don Shipley video), but who knows? Maybe people will benefit from the reminder that all humans are fallible.
To be fair, the rules weren't standardized in ANY way back then. You could argue that since they were built into the cartridge it was more of an exploit than a cheat. I think its awesome how speed running evolved to contain multiple categories to make the competition fair, like what system you're playing on or if you're using glitches, exploits, or in-game cheats.
I remember playing Turok Evolution with my little bro on PS2. He loved playing bloodbath mode which gave you access to every gun with unlimited ammo, even the ones that auto locked on through walls. It was a busted game mode that I hated because there was no skill involved. When I would complain to my parents they just said it wasn't cheating if it was part of the game... True, but it wasn't fun... My Bro did nothing wrong, he just enjoyed the fact that he could get a win on me with such a level (albeit simple) playing field.
I think they knew about the rampant cheating and decided to go the “let’s reward the guy who plays a game that no one else did because… variety.” Smart move on their part.
"Hey boss? My son really wants to win that controller we're offering as a prize." "What? Fine whatever just have him tell us some numbers in some shit game we don't have listed yet who cares this garbage is just filler anyway."
@Michael 92 you don't get how much this shows about him. He is a guy that's completely against cheating now, this video is just a video that lets him get something off his chest and i'm happy he made this
@Nay Thoughtless him being haunted every night by this explains it and his tone of voice throughout the vid seems geniune enough to not take this. Sponsors do obligate you to post that you sponsor them in every vid if you have a contract withthem
I was holding my breath throughout the entire video expecting to hear "Oh, and I cheated on Dam" or something like that. Honestly, though, the fact that a 14 year old cheated in a video game and felt so haunted by it over the last 21+ years is the most on point teenage anxiety thing I have ever heard. Thanks for staying true to yourself, Karl.
I don't think he actually felt haunted by it, he just said it to play it up and make it seem like he did something serious. Only to reveal that it's a stupid thing he did as a kid
I think this video is sarcasm. He may be feeling a bit guilty but not much, since duh, its 23 years ago and its one where everyone else cheated anyway.
I can, but I've been following his videos just long enough to smell grade AAA class 1 Karl bullshit when it wafts by. But it's good that he apologized to everyone but Jon Burrows … because fuck that guy, he cheated. 🤣
Honestly, Karl, I'm glad you decided to be the bigger man in this, even though I highly doubt that anyone from 20 years ago would really care at this point.
"I highly doubt that anyone from 20 years ago would really care at this point." Unless someone is like the Dude from Billy Madison. Karl's name is on a list.
I went into this video expecting to be heartbroken, came out of it still impressed with you and with a newfound understanding of just how egregious and widespread cheating was in speedrunning even back in the 90s.
Cheating has always been a thing, but I think the problem here wouldve been more the complete lack of editorial control. That probably was never a ranking to be taken serious.
I went into it expecting it to be sarcastic somehow and address some kind of ridiculous accusation by satirizing it and endlessly making fun of it... ngl, I was waiting for a punchline or another shoe to drop for quite a while. But I guess it makes sense: I just looked up his birth date and he was about *twelve years old* around the time he admitted to cheating. What kind of hater is going to withhold forgiveness for that ?
@@TheMiracleMatter A STUPID hater, that's who. They can't hold something against an adult if it was done when they were so young; That'd just be ridiculous and unfair to the person.

While at first I found it was a bit silly to apologize for a mishap 20 years ago, I thought about it some more. This is finally an apology from somebody not sorry for being caught, but for what he did. Cudos
It's not an apology or a joke video. It's a way to reveal a past sin and get ahead of a story before someone else exposes it. A bit of cheating 20 years ago is no big deal for most of us. But as of late Karl has made a career of exposing cheats.... so if someone did the research and put out their own video that would be very embarrassing.
This reads less like a confession and more like just still being salty that some 20 years ago Karl compromised his morals to compete on an equal playing ground and still losing... and to be honest I feel that.
In all fairness Karl, where you even speedrunning when you cheated? Did you really ate pizza and drank coke while you played the game in invincibility mode? I think notx and therefore you are still clean in my opnion. Absolute legend

Someone needs to make a video about how ridiculously difficult and intricate it was to pull off the debug mode cheat in Star Wars Shadows of the Empire. You literally had to push down almost every button on the N64 controller and then move the control stick with your chin. (Because your hands were occupied pushing the buttons.) But you had to move the control stick only SLIGHTLY to the right and then slightly to the left and slightly to the right again. I've never seen a more involved and physically taxing code for a video game in my life to this day.
@@georckbread3403 I think it was most of the buttons held down at once, but only one specific C-Button. Then you had to move the control stick left and right, but not all the way. It was ludicrously complicated, but it let you do all sorts of things. EDIT: wait no, it was all the c-buttons, l, r, z and left on the d-pad
