I'm not a speedrunner, but as a fan I generally prefer when speedruns are timed by in-game timers, especially ones that round to the nearest second. It makes every new record that much more meaningful, since especially in GoldenEye you could have literally have dozens of people tie a world record before you get that one incredible run that brings it down one more second.
P.S. You know I'm talking about your Dam 52 run Karl, you absolute LEGEND!

MY greatest gaming achievement involved Natalia and the elevator. Using unlocked weapons cheat... Placed proximity mines near the cave wall outside of the elevator and watch mines around her.... Click the watch blasted her as you see in the video... When she flies out the elevator she hits the proximity mines which then blasts her upwards.....ha

You're forgetting the 'speed option' strategy. Easily can get under 6:05 that way

The Facility optimization baffled me, I struggled in 00 agent to get it under 2:05 to get the invincibility cheat, but this is amazing!!
I’m not a speed runner, and honestly knew very little about it. The more I’ve watched your, and Summoning Salt’s videos, the more the subject fascinates me. It’s to the point I’ve binged watched almost the entire catalog on both of your channels. I was born in 85’ so the games you usually cover are my childhood. You guys have definitely educated me on just how challenging speed running truly is, and just how hard these people work at their craft. Very impressive, and you all certainly have my respect. Thank you for the excellent content!

When I was a teenager playing coop missions with my little brother back in 2000 or whenever this game came out, xpansion pack included, I'd go into the settings and pick this exact one to play. If I remember right, you could choose the music track for multiplayer or.. Maybe it was single player? Maybe it was just an options setting to test music tracks. Anyway it was so chill I remember always picking it. (first song you play on this video)
When in-game time and real time somehow collide with each other, probably changing the in-game events I feel reminded of 'schrödinger's cat' and the vast & marvelous world of quantum physics...

@@kukuc96 What I don't understand is why lag would slow down Bond's distance per frame, rather than speeding it up (if his speed is tied to actual time) or keeping it the same (if his speed is tied to the framerate).
These videos are awesome. It's so crazy to see people fine tuning a game from over 2 decades ago.
I remember back when I tried to get the Invinciblity cheat and got my 00 Agent 1:46. Out of a day worth of runs only a minimal number of them succeeded but none of them gave me the cheat. Only after Doak was in the hallway and Trev was near the stairs I got the cheat with a time that was around 19 secs better than the time needed to get the cheat. The RNG is damn real on Facility and unlocking Invincibility is still (two years after getting Goldeneye and getting the cheat) my proudest gaming moment.

I like that GoldenEye runners are so appalled by the idea of using software to time a run, they just base all their times on an in game timer that somehow doesn't count time the same way as actual time works. Lol

What's more, I just like the idea of using in game timer rather than real time (which is what almost every game uses). It's fun trying to shave a few milliseconds off to reach a new benchmark, rather than a continuous improvement of time where there's no real excitement or sense of striving to reach new goals.

Spartan Prime sounds like hell on earth. Id rather go workout and do human flags, front levers and handstand pushups
After watching the comparison a bunch in fast and slow motion, the main differences in time is due to be lag affecting the timer, with the slower but also faster run, having more happening.
The times are basically identical at the start, however, the right run is aiming lower, and has a lower time, until the time on the left looks more at the ground and the timer overtakes it. And until the security gate, both are basically identical, but the right video overtakes it due to a better viewing angle showing slightly more wall, but then loses time due to a guard shooting Bond in the next segment. The next segment has the right camera take a hit, which appears to overall affect the rate of the clock as after this for a few ticks, the timer only goes up between 0.03 seconds and 0.05 seconds max for a small moment of time , where as the left can go as high as 0.09 through ticks at the same time. At this segment, the right screen progressed 1.05 seconds (29.15 until 30.20) while the left progressed 2.05 seconds (29.75 to 31.80) within the EXACT same time frame (checked via pausing and recording down the times at 0.25x speed, it's not a guess).
And now is when the left video pulls ahead, you'll notice that towards the end, the left video spends slightly more optimized time looking at the ground, and while running along the dam, the guardrail sprite itself obscures more of the mountains in the background when compared to the right video (check and pause at around 10:49 for reference if it doesn't make much sense), and this is where the timer starts to more drastically differentiate.
The less lag the system has to deal with, the faster the in-game timer can run. The more lag, the slower it runs due to all that's going on. And that something as simple as bringing up the blue and red bars can slow the timer by A LOT also.. Does more lag slow the results screen timer also? I'm guessing this Gameshark code is just a visual representation of said results timer. Surely someone can test this just by running to the end of Runway w Invincibility on, with the timer on, one looking at the ground with, and the other looking ahead, and see if the time results in the left being slower due to the clock having less lag slowing it down.
TL;DR Lag speeds up and slows down the in-game clock, with more to process, the less in game time gets passed, so the in-game timer is overall influence..able. The old "game speed tied to a frame-rate that fluctuates" gimmick. Someone feel free to call me an egg, an absolute legend, or Captain Obvious.

A modern take on Goldeneye 007 controls-
You CAN play the original game the way modern FPS controls work.
Here is how:
First choose in game controls menu "1.2 solitaire" and use an original N64 controller (sorry Brawler64 I still love you). Now put your left hand on the D-pad for walking and strafing, and your Right hand to use the stick for looking and aiming only. Change the inverted or non-inverted as desired "Reverse" or "Upright" in game. The right index finger is now to shoot. Your left index finger is now to aim with the L button. This functions similar to and mimics the hand assignments of most modern FPS and newer controllers. This fixes the original tank-like control option that a lot of kids used back in the day.
BTW, you can also use these similar controls for Duke Nukem64, Turok, Doom64, Quake 2 already has this control setting by default!

10:08 About the Bonus runs of Dam (Agent): the in-game timer of the Left Side Screen is FASTER than the in-game timer of the Right Side Screen in real time. I believe this is because of the Left Side Screen’s game system [or video file] that runs FASTER than the Right Side Screen’s game system. Optimistically, you can visually see the difference in real time - for the Left Side Screen: movement is faster, actions are faster, the handgun wobble is faster, and the sky is faster - for the Right Side Screen: the in-game timer is slower. This is why the Left Side’s run completes FASTER, but is completed SLOWER, than the Right Side’s run; even though the Left Side is FASTER in actuality (real time), the Right Side is FASTER in reality (in-game time). The Right Side (53:00 [00:53:81]) is ‘one second’ FASTER than the Left Side (54:00 [00:54:03]) based on the movements and actions of the Right Side which has more direct routes, straighter movement, less turns, less actions, and more boosts.

As a bit of context for IGT (in-game time) vs RT (real-time).
The two main differences between IGT and RT are how the clock handles lag, and how long loading screens are.
Many games drop their framerate when hitting lag, and if the game clock is impacted by the framerate (ie the clock only ticks up when a frame occurs, if there is frame lag, less frames per second will occur), then the ingame clock will also be impacted by the lag. With this relationship between lag and ingame clocks, every runner will take the same amount of time to walk from point A to point B, even if one of them has an extra second of lag in their run.
Often times, lag is something that players have very little influence over (ie how many enemies or items are onscreen/active), but ultimately, there are going to be variances in every runner's attempt. Some communities have decided that managing that lag is a skill and part of the run, while others want to see times not impacted by lag.
There are many different speedrunning communities (especially those based around more cutting edge games, or games played on different consoles/emulators) that have elected to use IGT rather than RT because using real-time gives an automatic advantage to speedrunners with nicer machines, or unfair advantages to runners playing on a specific console. The faster the machine, the less lag will impact you. If the community uses real time, then two perfect runs where one had a frame of lag in will simply be a worse run.
Furthermore, there are some games that have unlocked framerates (such as the new resident evil) that have some coding blindspots if you jack up the framerate. for example, the knife in Resident Evil can hit multiple times in the same swing if you have framerates above 200fps. This exploit drastically reduces most boss fights, assuming you have a machine capable of running the game smoothly at that framerate, essentially pricing a massive portion of the playerbase out if they can't take advantage of this trick that is more or less pay-to-win.
Every game is different, and how every game manages their IGT is different. I'm saying this to illuminate why there isn't a unification to have all games one or the other. Most communities have pretty clear reasons for using the clock they do.
I believe that only displaying the whole seconds is pretty big con to using IGT for goldeneye. Though I don't run this game so there may be several more valid reasons to use IGT over real time. In the more general case, I think IGT should be used, but if there are reasons to use real time, we shouldn't be shackled to convention.
