The Alphas - A story to fix the Alien Franchise - Those above the Engineers (Theory) Part One

  • Hi everyone, I've been having my own ideas lately on how I would fix the alien franchise after the prequels. I took in most of the complaints I've heard from the fans, and tried to do a theory fan fiction type story to try to fix the continuity issues without any retconn. Lets take a look at part one, where we meet the Alpha aliens, and the xenoengineers!

    Hi guys, I love the movies as they are, but I did some story telling of my own to see how I would tie the franchise together, and fix some stuff that I and many others didn't like. Its just a "for fun" story, only about 3 days of thinking here, no major theory, hope you enjoy! I will note that the Alphas aren't meant to be related to the Engineers or the humans, they would be ancient and Engineers and Humans don't happen til much later.

      Good so far I like the idea of the Alpha's, and Engineers but there is one big hole...
      why would they make LV223 a bio hazard after instructing humans to go there when they had a chance. Space is ginormous, they could have dumped the goo literally anywhere else.
      Maybe "the goo goes bad" when it is not maintained. The original Idea might have been to introduce humans (and engineers) to this bio tech but, after thousands of years, the Alpha's experienced a regime shift, the human and engineer project was scrapped and the goo was abandoned and allowed to go bad.

      Its a little convoluted.....but....yeah - i like this idea! I could certainly buy into it!
      With how "messy" the prequels seem to have got, i suppose plot somersaults are inevitable at this point!
      As i say, i like theory, but i find it hard to imagine how it could translate to the big screen....its quite complex!
      I can't shake the feeling, that a movie just isn't enough time to fully explore alot of these ideas (same goes for Prometheus and Covenant too) Maybe....juuuuust maybe, Ridley Scott would be better off making an Alien TV series? I mean....im sure it'll never happen, but i just think he needs alot more than 2 hours to really explain himself properly. But hey - Awakening might be THE movie we've all been waiting for.......maybe.....
      ....I'm gonna watch part two now - keep it up SciFi Explained! =D

      It would not be able to undo the damage of Prometheus and covenant. One of the many errors of these films revolves around androids. In Alien the crew are shocked that Ash is an Android as are the audience. In Prometheus the prequel, David is known to the crew as an android, but have been exposed to that technology? There should not have been an android in the prequels which is a pity as the android was the only one who could act!

    Prometheus was a good film in my opinion. The problem with Covenant was they seemingly dropped the Engineers and just made it a standard scifi horror type film. They should've explored the engineers we saw in Prometheus. I thought they was very interesting concept.

    • @whynottalklikeapirat
      @whynottalklikeapirat 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      The fact that you enjoyed it and had a good experience does not formally make it a good film as an object. It's visually stunning but just formally bad, and contrived screenwriting.

    • @whynottalklikeapirat
      @whynottalklikeapirat 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Anthony Emrick I read the script and it's a little better than the film. Still it's a mess from a crafts-perspective, that's true regardless of whether you view it as part of the alien franchise or not.

    • @whynottalklikeapirat
      @whynottalklikeapirat 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Anthony Emrick I was not talking about the classic book/movie adaptation issues if that's what you were thinking about, "written materials" is not one lumped together category, a screenplay is a very specific thing. As a professional you don't read a script for the experience of reading, but with an analytical, dramaturgically focused eye, which is not about "lit crit" but about basic functionalities and narrative bones. It's more of an engineering type of read if you will.
      I don't know where I stand on whether or not the Prometheus line should have been tied to alien or not, using the same universe for different things will always be somewhat ambivalent because there just formally already ARE basic connections. If there weren't and they did not matter, you could have made a completely separate line of movies. Maybe they should have.
      But honestly for me it's not about expectation it just comes down to craft of storytelling and while these metaconsiderations are quite interesting, what bugs me about prometheus is not that, but the fact that it combines a host of basic crafts violations with having no sense of it's core self. It takes fundamental and radical revisions to fix something like that, it's not surface stuff, it's in the bones, and frankly about half the movie as it stands would be gone and entirely new fundamental ideas have to be invented in the place of what you cut if you went down the road towards some kind of healing.
      It reminds me of certain students projects that I used to supervise at university, when they go through the whole process of writing a scientific paper but they forgot to truly formulate and validate the basic problem they're working on and make the right subsequent choices about what to focus on and what tools to use to do it. The result is meandering, superficial and looking for coherence and finding fragmented bits with potential here and there only to immediately run off looking for it in some other place that seems immediately inspiring. Not suprisingly such products have no meaningful conclusion, because they touched upon nothing and everything in the process.
      Interestingly - just like Prometheus these projects tend to be not concrete and particular but drift off into some very meta and nebulous, philosophical searches for connection at a level they never earned acces to by building bottom-up.
      There is no grounding there. It's a fascination with a heap of material and potential themes which is fine at a research stage of both project writing and art making, but at some point you have to dig deeper than that and start making relevant choices. If not, all that truly connects the pieces is your fasciation with the potential web of complex internconnections between them.
      An professional artist friend of mine once said: The more concrete and particular you get, the more abstract or many-layered you can allow yourself to become.
      Prometheus never does that. It hints at all this elaborate context, like a stoner at a freshman party, and at the same time if fails to even draw characters at the most basic level.

    • @whynottalklikeapirat
      @whynottalklikeapirat 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Anthony Emrick I get what you are saying but I am not sure I follow the connection? Revision of surface detail kind of assumes a an existing coherent core and a defined core premise by which you navigate when making revisions. My point is that Prometheus does not effectively establish that. I don't see the problems this movie has as revision stage issues, but more as fundamental flaws, that result in a pervasive lack of direction and part/whole coherence.

    The problem is that this was not originally Ridley Scott's story. It was Dan O'Bannon's. When the original Alien movie was done, Scott made a huge amount of changes to it. It is like he wants to make a whole series of movies to change the original to make it completely his story. Unfortunately, he can't, because the original movie is already done.

      I realize that. I'm just saying that Scott is using the prequels to change the inferences that were in the original movie. Many people feel, including the narrator for Scifi Explained, the overall story of the has become disjointed enough to need fixing. I'm saying the reason Scott is doing this is because he is still trying to take ownership of the original movie that was O'Bannon's.

    i thought the opening scene of prometheus suggested that the engineer who drank the black goo was being outcast for some reason, and was allowed to sort of seppuku. he drank the black goo and should have completely disintegrated, but a single cell survived and formed the basis of life on the planet (i.e. primordial soup), which eventually resulted in humans. the engineer at the end of prometheus killed the crew because they're abominations spawned from this outcast, and the engineers had intended to annihilate them on earth before the contagion on the test planet stopped them.

    The people did think that the *Super Beings were in the ship.* They did think that they came back. That is why they were cheering at first.
    The engineer race is much more complex that it was shown in the films so far. David knows them from his studies on the ship. He might want to wage war on them. I love your story, and it shows how much fans love the Alien film universe to the point where they/we have to make up our own individual stories to get closure. Closure is the core problem with Prometheus and Covenant. It's time for stubborn fans to accept that fact that the ending of Covenant is the main problem. With our endless debating and theories, perhaps we have to admit to ourselves that Ridley Scott turned his best creation into a slasher movie with a cheesy slasher style ending we have seen in countless other movies.

The Engineer started before Aliens so it deserves to be told and you do see the space jockey early in the series. So most wanted to know more fill the void so to speak. The relationship between the Alphas and the Engineers reminds me of our own issue with AI today. By 2014, both physicist Stephen Hawking and business magnate Elon Musk had publicly voiced the opinion that superhuman artificial intelligence could provide incalculable benefits, but also can end the human race. That is they would see humans as a threat to the planet and a hindrance to expansion into the universe.

    • @darthrevan1281
      @darthrevan1281 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don’t think sapient AI would necessarily see us as an existential threat, but rather one to be ignored or avoided. It may not even require or even desire to be housed in any sort of mobile synthetic body the way we would think of one. In the original Mass Effect, one of the quests involves tracking down a rogue AI thats just chilling in some random mainframe discretely skimming money and energy in order to sustain itself. It doesn’t even make itself known, let alone become hostile until it’s discovered. That struck me as the most plausible depiction of how a rogue AI might behave in real life.
      “Security through Obscurity” instead of some overly dramatic genocidal conflict.

    The reason the interior of the ship from Alien and Aliens looked so organic was because the xeno that burst out of the pilot’s chest started building a hive inside. There was a novel that focused on Newts parents searching of that craft, it’s a very good story.

    I always imaged that the xenomorphs originated from a planet that had a symbiotic sentient race with them. This large, powerful telepathic race, looked somewhat similar to the toy Crab Alien, but have more intelligent faces. They evolved to hatch xenomorphs without dying from it. Eventually, with their telepathy and xenomorphs, they started to conquer the know universe. Xenomorphs not hatched from themselves were weaponized to harvest entire races in a non sustaining rampage. Eventually, they ran into a race that goes beyond understanding, and that race wiped out the sentient race. Only the xenomorphs remained. So now, you find ancient xenomorph nests where they learn to harvest hosts in a sustainable manner and control the hive numbers, and ships with weaponized versions. Other races fail to use xenomorphs because they cannot use that telepathic connection and safely hatch their own. Engineers would be a major race trying to use the xenomorphs.
    This would also explain how xenomorphs just know how to break in and damage human buildings. They have a instinctual telepathic connection to their host species, and instinctively use it to find weaknesses and find more hosts.

      TheZXKUQYB When I watched all the movies over, that black goo seems to have been the key to it all seeing how it can alter DNA. If you watch AvP the predator shows her that exoskeleton of the Alien is quite resistant and the Acid blood just rolls off it like water. And if you pay close attention to the anatomy of the alien exoskeleton it looks just like the interior of the ships used by the engineers. The ship was grown/built organically, if think about it, the exoskeleton made a perfect hull for a ship, not sure how hot the aliens blood was but it looked like it could melt through predator/human known substance like a hot knife through butter. So I can see it being used for space travel able to resist any atmosphere.

      @@lonestarwolfentertainment7184 the engineers could have made the humans but not the xenos. The xenos I think are an off shoot of a different species that were higher than the engineers. If that makes sense. The engineers tried to steal knowledge from them (Prometheus) and had a war destroying the original species but now the engineers have become unable to procreate without them. So are trying to recreate them/worship them as god's. However they can't as they are a lower level of species/knowledge and thus can only ever get to the retrograde version of the xenomorph.

    Great "Theory" if you can call it that - since it's, like you said, more your personal addition to the lore.
    This would work flawlessly though imo. That there would be need for some kind of third intelligent race to tie up the loose ends of the human-engineer relation was probably shared by many, especially after Covenant, but the way you thought of the engineers bein created by the "alphas" in the image of the humans fits soooo peeerfectly (ಥ_ಥ) ! Every since Prometheus - for me personally - it felt like it should be obvious that the engineers were too "heinous" to be mankinds humble creators who would welcome them on their homeworld and since the possible explanation for that issue - the engineer civil war - was not addressed in Covenant, it makes just so much more sense to have them be put in a more passive role concerning their capabilities to create (good) and their impact in the background. This also fits well with the "simple" and humble, not-war-waging- engineers on Paradise. The hostility towards(or rivalry between Engineers and) humans would also make perfect sense, considering that the Engineers(or maybe just the Xenoengineers) were probably frustrated and in vain after realising they were merely created as a replication of humans instead of the mighty "creators" they probably thought they were destined to be.
    This would finally give the Engineers as a whole a lot more debth because of their own struggle to find and explain their own origin and purpose ....It possibly drives(or drove) them even more than it did the humans, since the Engineers at some point knew for sure that they were "just creations"
    And there you have your multi-layered, deep antagonism between humans and Engineers! :
    The (modern) humans have known they were a product of evolution but deep inside craved to fit into a bigger picture, where on the other hand the (Xeno)Engineers are too obsessed with power to accept they are merely someone elses product.
    So in a way they are both pretty equally disappointed, mad and confused about it. - sad :(
    TL;DR: good boy (¬‿¬)

      Agreed. I think what is becoming clear with our own civilization is that eventually science will give any member of an super advanced society the power and capability to destroy the whole lot, or at least set them back to the stone age on a regular basis ... you end up with a situation where only those that are moral, just, and respect life become capable of filling the role of creator, then back off and let the creation develop as mankind did.

    You have a wealth of information that you graciously share with your subscribers and viewers I know it's second nature to you, but speaking for myself, I find it necessary to view it more than once. This is due to again the complicated wealth of information that I know it's second nature to you but not to everyone. You have unraveled a complicated tapestry and I expect her in the process of showing us thread by thread what the prequel alien series is about. Maybe it's based on supposition mixed with backs I don't know and frankly I don't care. You give us a linear history of so many things that were vague in the movies of the genre. Prometheus was a very enticing movie but it left a lot of unanswered questions that for those who find science fiction fascinating, especially when it smacks of realism. Thank you for your efforts and your work, it is much appreciate KEEP IT COMING!!!

    Honestly, the outcome I want is that the Xeno's are their own species and David is just following their natural evolution without even realizing. I know a lot of people don't like AVP or some of the shared lore of Alien and Predator, but I personally prefer the lore from some of those books and comics than the movie retcons. Also, the idea that even when the engineers and David futz with Xeno genetics, it still ends up following it's own set evolutionary line adds a level of futility that I tend to enjoy in media.

    Reminds me of when i concocted a story to allow DCEU movies to be good and still give a sense to the grim depressing first installments by simply involving the Sandman being trapped in a bottle for one hundred years (exactly like in the first volume of Gaiman's saga, which in the DCEU would coincide with the time when Wonder Woman decided to stop fighting for mankind) and so being unable to make people dream and fulfill their ideal selves except for one individual in the whole galaxy every specific amount of time, thus explaining Batman's dream sequences, or Jor'El ideal of hope (never truly fulfilled because Clark never dreamt it by himself, therefore doing his father's bidding without really understanding), or Martin Luther King's speech "i have a dream", and probably something on Oa or a specific green lantern too etc. etc.
    Too bad the studios will never give a shit about ideas far better than the ones they think will be more "marketable"

    The next movie has to be engineers versus xenomorphs which David is in command of as the engineers seek retribution for the genocide David committed

    Very well explained! Looking forward to more about the Alphas and the XenoGoo....or any more related to the subject. Also...I dont think fans have an issue with the prequels lore but more than likely its the lack of info you just provided along with dry character reference. Event Horizon, Alien, even Guardians of the Galaxy had a cast you grew to know and have concern for. They should use your ideas and I'm interested in hearing more of what you think about the franchise.

    The problem I have is that when I first watched the original Alien film it gave off the vibe that the engineers found the xenomorphs nor created them. I like that idea much better. Because it's seperates the species in, one of them evolved like us to create machines capable of interstellar travel while the other like some sort of virus became a highly adaptable super killer that can kill whole species. Personally I'd like it if the series moved away from the origin of the species and left it to mystery. That being said I did enjoy the Neomorph, wouldn't mind a movie with one of those chasing people around a ship. Half the fun of the first 2 alien movies is finding out what it can do.

    I feel like they're afraid to explore more of the lore in the movies. I love the prequels (Prometheus moreso than covenant) but I feel like the prequels problems have stemmed from a fear of taking story risks that pay off the greater questions of the series. So maybe Awakening will answer these questions, but if not I feel like too much is left unsaid in favor of a dumber "Xenomoroh smash" action blockbuster rather than the Dark Horror Mystery which works so much better! as.

  • @azmike3572

    One question - if engineers were created using human DNA then why are they more advanced than humans?

    • @scifiexplained
      @scifiexplained  7 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Because they were created, and modified by the alphas. They may have been left with some tech as well after the Alphas made them and left.

    • @user-pu6te8rh8e
      @user-pu6te8rh8e 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      But why did the Alphas not create the engineers from themselves... just as humans created the robots without needing to "suddenly" discover a species similar to them in the universe? (Which is already something forced and inconsistent).
      It would be well for the Alphas to be the "gods" and creators of the Engineers in a long chain of intelligent life creation in the universe.
      But putting them to relegate the Engineers as secondary characters, and saving a "natural evolution of man"... at this point of mythology sounds absurd.
      In summary, the best would be:
      - The Alphas are the earliest known creators.
      - Engineers are the "farmers" of that created animated matter, responsible for planting them throughout the universe.
      - Humans are one of the descendants (species) that have most progressed in this "farming" of life.

    • @ulfberht4431
      @ulfberht4431 7 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Soren Alik because the Alpha's are far more advanced than the engineers or humans that they don't need another alien race to be their slaves or dogs. The Alphas can just simply create a few life forms and let them go about their daily lives. I mean think about it, if you had the power to create life and you were 10 times more advance then them, would you really need to use them since they aren't capable enough to understand your abilities?

      Your story loses consistency between minutes 4 and 7. If humanity was to meet them on LV-226 when they ha the technology, but the moon was already an Engineer military installation. How can they be when you later state the Alphas created the Engineers using their own DNA and human DNA? In other words how could the engineers militarize LV-226 if they didn't exist before the humans landed there?

    • @sylasviper715
      @sylasviper715 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      they did. The alphas created the engineers after returning from earth with human DNA. which they hybridized with their own in an attempt to make a perfect civilization. Little did the y know the engineers would later overrun this moon.
