Ridley Scott Tells the REAL REASON Why Engineers Want to Kill Humans and Destroy Earth

- Why Engineers wanted to Drop Black Goo on Earth? Why Engineers hate humanity?
When I saw Prometheus I was quite surprised that one of the Engineers, creators of life on Earth was so agressive to the human crew and proceded to launch a ship that would destroy humanity. Many people probably expected species of this advanced civilization to act more peacefully but this it not what happens. In this video I’m gonna talk about why engineers hate humans and want to kill them and it’s not because they got jealous of human hair. Although the movie does not explicitly answer theis question Ridely Scott actually explains the Engineer motives in a podcast with the Empire Magazine.

Before we get to the Scott’s explanation, I will briefly mention some other good theories that also sound plausible and can be even more logical than the director’s answers.
One theory suggests that there are two fractions of Engineers - creators who seeded Life on Earth and destroyes who think that any other live form other than Engineers is unethical and shouldn’t exist. That would explain why the ship used by creators at the begining of Prometheus is different from Juggernauts used by destroyers. It would also explain the difference in suits since creators don’t have these bio suit that seemingly merge the body. So just like humans they probably have different nations and group with distinct goals.
Another theory is that Engineers seed planets with life to experiment and develop weapons. Once a civilization achieves a certain level of technlogal advancement they would drop their bio weapon the black goo in this case to test how effective it is.
We know that Engineers not only seed Earth with life but also the people on Planet 4 were their creations as well. So Engineer could experiment with humanoid life forms to see which ones would develop faster.
A different theory suggests that the Engineer started to kill people as soon as he touched David. Maybe the Engineer realized that David is not a biological creation and considered this quote on quate life form disgusting, so he killed David first and proceded to the human crew. Or maybe Engineers thought they are the only ones who are entitled to create just like humans programmed later versions of androids such as Walter forbidding them to be creators.
These were a pretty good theories but now let’s talk about the Ridley Scott explanation which I think is really good and ties with the dialog scene when the Engineer wakes up.
When Weyland tries to talk to the Engineer and Shaw interputs him, he order his man hit her and shoot her if she tries to speak again. Although it is presented as the Engineer does not understand English, I think he realized that humans are violent and dangerous species so that for some reason Weyland is allowed to talk to him but not Elizabeth.
As Ridley said he sees Engineers as gardeners of space that would occasionaly visit an empty bowl and out of their god like generousity create life but they periodicaly visit planets they’ve seeded if they discover that their offspings have lost their way and proved to be a disapointment, they would wipe the planet clean. Pretty much like God who caused the great flood because the Earth was filled with violence, corruption and inequality. This is very similar to what was happening on Earth around 0 b c when the Engineers originaly planned to deastoy humans.
As we know from prometheus, the Engineer ship was about 2000 years old, so after observing that humanity have not developed the way the wanted , Ridley states that Engineers decided to send their missionary Jesus Christ as the last attempt to guide humans onto the right path. But we ended up crisufing him, so the Engineers made a finaly decision that life on Earth was a mistake and prepared to launch their ship.
That is also confirmed by what David does to people on the planet 4.He learned of the Engineer and then dropped the black goo booms to destroy a humanoid race.
The Engineer in prometheus wakes up and sees that people that they wanted to destroy 2000 years ago arrived to the distant planet. He realizes that humans are still violent and corrupt spiecies who are also capable of interstellar travel which makes them even more dangerous to other Engineer creations. It is no surprise that the Engineer kills the human crew and proceeds to destroy Earth.
According to Ridley, the Engineer plant to destroy humanity is still relevant today based on what is happening in the world right not including the pollution of environment, poverty and inequality in poor countries.

I always thought it would make a good tie-in with Predator. The Predator's species could be a previously seeded planet which went array, showing the Engineers the possible negative implications of their project to seed life throughout the universe. An Engineer ship dropping a payload of Xenomorphs onto the Predator's home planet would have made for such a much better AvP film.

I love the idea of the engineers creating a lifeform that could represent a threat to themselves, the same way humans created David who might threaten their existence
David is obviously superior to human beings. Humans are not superior to engineers.
Theory: The engineers are just like modern day humans in terms of craving power, greed etc. and not at all god like. They use the black goo to hold onto power and control. However they also have their own ancient history, myths and religion. A group of engineer that practises the old ways and believe that the black goo had religious purpose begin populating planets according to there own scriptures. The ruling engineers discover this and rule it an unlawful act and so decide to undo life generated on these worlds. On hearing this the old way engineers sabotage the plan and use the black goo to destroy the invasion fleet seen running in the hologram and die in the process.

I think Ridley Scott is making a parallel between the engineers and the Anunakis, it would make sense: one military faction and another geneticist. The engineers we have seen so far may be the military faction and have not yet introduced us to the geneticists.

Well it's crystal clear where his LV426 comes from, why those stars in Zeti Reticuli. If you see the extra details from Prometheus then it shows you the map created by Betty Hill. It's the same map.
They (the Engineers) really are the Annunaki. They’re even tall like them. I actually got to see a ziggurat, while I was in Iraq, and the ‘sky beings’ are usually described as towering. And, their technologies were ‘magicks’ and a part of the being. I personally think the ‘Engineers’ seed and harvest life forms periodically, to perfect/modify soul matrices, and optimize the experience/perceptions of the life they seeded. Engineers/Annunaki are the seeding components, the xenomorphs and ‘predators’ are harvesters. I think there’s a great filter, or a ‘Mass Effect’ Reapers type organisms, that even the Engineers are trying to evolve or get past being made the whims of.

There is no such thing as a peaceful bearer of weapons of mass destruction like theirs. They didn't create us, they were trying to steal earth. David referred to their world as paradise because it had an affections and interest in Shaw and it didn't want of spoil her dream of finding answers, (maybe connected to religion) it knew of her dreams and the word it used to describe their planet was what her father told her about 'where mom went!' in her childhood. The engineers have reached their peak and they were suffering the fate of all empires. The beginning scene of prometheus maybe was an experiment to make the planet David destroyed habitable for them, but the sun of that solar system was old. Some stone heads in covenant resemble the deleted scene engineers in prometheus, maybe they were the ones who led them to the crusade of resurrecting their species form the dead end they were in.

Probably one of the greatest movies ever made. The degree of artistry by the entire team will probably never be matched again. Speaks volumes at the artistry of the team leader, Ridley Scott!
I feel the premise was very good but soooooo much unfulfilled potential
just my theory:
The Engineers used to have their own AI Technology just like we do now long ago, but it turned against them and almost destroyed them, so they stuck with using only biological technology and genetic engineering (when they discovered/created the black goo)in order to keep their "humanity" in tact and went as far as creating a religious culture out of it in order to maintain this lifestyle choice. When the humans were created by a rouge group of Engineers as an experiment to create a species similar to what they once were, they saw them as a threat not only to the Engineers themselves, but to all Biological species. They feared that if the humans were to live long enough, they'd create their own AI Technology similar to what they once had, and not only that, but it would turn against them as well and become its own species, superior to the Engineers and the humans both (basically into Gods), and to be able to create life in its own image. It would be the best explanation to why the Engineer woken up from cryo sleep ripped off David's head and would also explain David's quest to create life like we saw in Covenant.

That could explain why the waking engineer didn't hesitate to pull David's head from his shoulders.. that scene always surprised me when I first saw it - I was expecting the engineer to take a moment to observe in David what human's had technologically become capable of, instead he neutralizes him almost instinctively.

Ehhh it made sense why the engineer is aggressive in Prometheus. I don't know about you but a pack of creations of mine wake me up that I'm supposed to destroy which then wake me up from crysosleep after a few thousand years and a bunch of strangers are asking for eternal life calling themselves gods and one of them is beating up on a female who all the while was screaming half the time and crying out in pain. I'd say his actions were warranted to say the least.

Ridley Scott always has these original and creative perspectives on biblical accounts. It's awesome
Creators be like "time to upgrade", destroyers say no, "factory reset that planet!".
Someone once said “the matrix wasn’t a movie but a documentary” ….. or perhaps a warning. Makes me think the same way about the alien movies or Prometheus movies. Some also believe that we were created by aliens or God or Gods/Goddesses. Who knows.
I think it's even simpler. They saw the threat that humanity posed to them. They made a mistake in creating something that has the spark of creativity, and could therefore replace them. The same theme plays out in Covenant, where David's ability to create, his potential for original thought, was something that was recognised as a danger to us and designed out of later generations of synthetics.
I wish they would make a movie with more of the engineers, it would have been a better movie had they had shown the next movie of them finding the engineers

Hubble telescope has taken thousands of pictures of the universe. These pictures show millions of star filled galaxies.
Each galaxy billions of years old.
So, instead of 1 species "engineering" all species which came after, how about a consortium of beings.
These beings meet in space as they discover faster than light travel.
These differing beings realised that they were nonviolent beings.
This allowed them to survive long enough to create the tech it takes to travel dimensionally to other galaxies.
They decide to watch all species which send radio or other waves out into space. Those species which are deemed too violent are adjusted genetically.
When nothing changes a beings violent actions they aren't killed off. They'll do this themselves. They are only prevented from leaving their solar system, or planet if they are horrifically violent.

Just because their our ancient DNA ancestors doesn't make them benevolent. Also, they might have felt threatened by seeing our trajectory and that we might supersede them given time.

This is exactly what I walked away from the movie with, I never understood why people didn't understand Prometheus, it's clear is your listen and watch. Scott is a great story teller.

Second thought, the engineer understood how advanced man was becoming by touching a silicon man he could not create with the means of his technology and could not understand its workings and felt angry for postponing our extermination due to the accident (which I think was deliberate from one of them who felt remorse). After some point they might have felt threatened by having us in their galaxy.
I like the idea of different factions of engineers, could lead to some really cool story ideas in future movies.
Millenia long conflict between the two and with the "creators" sabotaging the "destroyers" weapons base on lv223 2000 years ago to protect us while leaving the star maps here to warn us of what they were doing. The conflict grew to the point their civilization has been mostly destroyed, giving a reason for why lv223 was forgotten and they hadn't returned to earth or how planet 4 was not yet destroyed. Or maybe befor the conflict ended planet 4 was made by one of the factions as either a replacement or alternative view on what earth was meant to be...

I don't think they want to kill humans out of a sense of disappointment or morality I think it's due to survival. Engineers know how dangerous AI is to them. When they realize humans are drifting towards AI, they need to end it.
DJZ-This is true, but when the engineers decided to kill us off, we were still wearing sandals and wielding swords. We were nowhere near any kind of technological achievement. Personally I think the engineers saw the savagery in humanity and decided to end us before time passed and we gained technology.

What i still don't understand is why didn't the engineers go back to earth in the last 2000 years. If the plot for Alien Awakening is that the engineers arrive to Planet 4 after David killed their creation there then It's more than obvious that the engineers on LV-223 weren't the only ones, so why didn't they approach humanity again?
Even during the Prometheus/Alien Covenant and later periods where humanity not only has traveled space for years but they even colonize planets, didn't they encounter engineers? Even in the movie Aliens the marines mention another alien race, so that means humanity not only has found other lifeforms but also equally intelligent life, so where are the engineers?

This is something that's been bothering me as well every since this pathetic "Alien Jesus" explanation came out. What perplexes me especially is that if the Engineers wanted us dead that badly, why weren't there other ships and crews set to come our way? If humanity was condemned to death by its creator, then why has over two millennia passed without any further effort on their part? And there comes more questions than I care to list that ultimately reflect on how poorly conceived and executed Ridley Scott's story is.
Jonathan Gunn agreed, their were other pyramids on the planet in Prometheus, why didn't the Engineers in those pick up the slack when the first pyramid went down with whatever took them out.

I know Scott is the creator (which sucks) but I do agree with the morality and experiment part as for what the Engineers deciding factors.
They seed life as well as destroy it, they're a balancing force of the cosmos.
But I've also felt that they have a certain hatred for "full" technology.
If you notice their ships are bio-organic as well as the Military factions suits are as well. Even in the comics their weapons seem to be bio-organic. They don't have any AI technology.
(Very far fetched idea) I think they despise AI's, if you look at the 1st mural from Prometheus, the creature the Engineer is subjugating greatly resembles their suits and bio masks...
Possibly a greater Alien race (possibly mechanical) that at one point created and enslaved the engineers or was a threat to their species, hence why everything is bio-organic so that they can remain in control.
The engineer became enraged once he realized David was a synthetic. Earth had created something the engineers both hated and feared....a conscience machine.
New life within the cosmos.
Think about Elden from Fire and stone, before he fused with the black goo and sacrificed himself for his friends, he began to mutate, became self aware and experienced emotions. The only defining factor was that he somehow became bio-organic. But he damn near unstoppable and was even able to command xenomorphs! He became a temporary god.
Why does it suck? Without him there is no Alien. I only blame him for allowing himself to be influenced and alter storylines.

Just watched prometheus again. A question for me is why the different acient civilizations on Earth draw the map to the Engineers planet?
Yeah for me this was a simple plot hole, humans wouldn’t have been able to draw a map to the stars etc. But then there’s the theories that the engineers sent teachers like Jesus Christ & all other religious deity and those characters may have drawn the map because they were supposed to be collected and due to the outbreak of the virus they never got picked up and taken home

And besides that, the engineers had two factions: the cloaked creators and the armored militants. However, both factions are the same size (10 feet tall) and both have pearl white skin and completely black eyes. The people seen in Covenant are human-sized, with dusty pink-gray skin and human-like eyes. Also, those people had no technology of any kind, something the engineers are strong with. They clearly worshipped the engineers and are far less developed. They are not the actual engineers.

Sorry, but you are overinterpretate the Engineer Scene in Prometheus. I agree with the reason why they wanted to wipe out humanity, but I disagree about the explanation behind the Emgineers agressive behavior in the Scene. I think it would make the Scenario more realistic, if we considere that the violent Engineer was just a soldier and was mistaken to be a wise and powerfuö being by Weyland. He had nothing in mind, the only thing he knew was that he had the order to End life on Earth and now this Earthlings wokw him up. He was probably fascinated or amused by this creatures, but then he rembered his mission and kills the humans and their synthetic creation in the believe that they are wrong.
Beast Titan I am not questioning the Engineers intelligence, but I do not think that the Engineers are much smarter than Humans. Humans like to mystify things that are actually totally banal in their nature. We find a survivior of an ancient and probavly powerful race, which has created life on Earth and it seems like this survivor has to be some godlike creature, capable of enlightning others. This was Weylands mistake. The violent Engineers was likely just an ordinary worker among his race and the only thing he knew was his Mission to exterminate humanity.

I don't think they have regular soldiers, I think one point that was being made in the video was that the engineers do not have inequality and would have most likely seen every being they created as important. That's why they needed to exterminate the species who are a danger to all life they created, he was most likely a very intelligent engineer as everyone would be educated in their world, and probably volunteered for this mission as they probably do for every mission

IF a more civilized and human group had came and woken the engineer and not shown barbaric and authoritarian properties over it's own kind like the act of shutting up and hitting Shaw it could have been argued that they may have been able to reason and convince the engineer that humanity was not the same as it was 2000 years ago. But Waylen showed the same treats that showed the engineers that humanity was a failed attempt even 2000 years later by claiming to be a creator and immediately requesting immortality and claiming to be like the engineers a creator of life or a God. I agree with Putin. I think what the Engineers saw 2000 years ago in humans was barbaric and dangerous so they set off to destroy everything, but yes, I think if the crew that woke him up could show that they had changed for the good and basically got their act together, it may have changed the Engineer's mind. A lot can happen in 2000 years while he was sleeping. Unfortunately they showed their true colors and the Engineer didn't have a need to stop the killing.

I think the outcome would be different since Shaw represents an ideal of human - kind and compassionate. David at that point was not completely insane and poisoned Charly only by Weyland order(that he received while talking to him in cryosleep).
