it was temporary since they close the west side line for work being done at penn station. I'm not sure how they turn the trains around though, they must've re-opened the turn around loop
Amtrak uses gct if the branch into penn station is being repaired plus there’s a big loop behind grand central where amtrak uses or if amtrak has 2 engines on each sides the engineer can switch ends
Instead of always going to Grand Central on Tracks 2 and 4, and to other destinations on Tracks 1, and 3, they can run on whichever track they want, in both directions.
No. As I understand it, there is no easy way for an engine crew to get out of an AMTRAK engine because of the tight clearances. There is apparently no "front door" on the engine. Therefore, they've got these MARC cars working as cab cars to pull the train to provide an escape if one is needed. I assume the engine is still powering the train using the prime mover or 3rd rail.
I remember reading about the problem when it became apparent that Empire Service trains would have to go back to GCT. Didn't keep up with what the solution would be.
I have never seen a modified diesel engine before where it can also get power from the third rail from below and has gas at the same time. Or modified Electric passenger train with photographs and third-rail power shoes before. Usually, I see one or the other.
NJ Transit also runs so-called dual-fuel locomotives that can either pull power from an overhead catenary or run diesel on non-electrified lines....only electrics are allowed into Penn and GCS so it avoids having to change the loco before heading into the tunnels...pretty cool stuff.
41:58 how in the world did they do that? There’s no CBTC or moving block signaling on this system, right? And you definitely can’t do that with fixed-block signaling!
Because years ago they had a contest where people wrote in and picked names and they voted for the best names that's why they were given names on the cars.
They do push pull service so they dont have to turn the train around the on the end of the train is called a cab car you can control the train from there.
The end of the M2's will spell the end of RFW videos. The entire front of the new cars is closed off for the "cab". Hope someone saves what RFW videos are already "in the can"
Cats01 still got the m3s on lirr for a bit and m3as on the Harlem and Hudson lines. M3as are staying as metro north decided not to get any m9s. M3as will be getting an overhaul and refreshment to continue service. Lirr m3s though do not have much left and will be replaced by the m9s in a few months or a year or so
During Amtrak? Between New Rochelle to Grand Central Amtrak doesn't run on that stretch. They did years ago briefly to Grand Central Terminal but discontinued because the trains don't go beyond Grand Central Terminal.
Brings back memories of the NYC and New Haven running back and forth on this line.
21:40 is the most confusing thing I’ve ever seen

2:32 "Hello there"
50:53, I didn't know Amtrak's come that close to Grand Central! And at 56:45 that sound of the M7s screeching against the rails just sounds beautiful!
it was temporary since they close the west side line for work being done at penn station. I'm not sure how they turn the trains around though, they must've re-opened the turn around loop
@@JoeyLovesTrains there is a turn around in gct on the last track it’s a loop.
Amtrak uses gct if the branch into penn station is being repaired plus there’s a big loop behind grand central where amtrak uses or if amtrak has 2 engines on each sides the engineer can switch ends
My route every morning from New Heaven to Grand Central :)
Same but I go from Chappaqua
M8’s t better, wish the Harlem line had em
The 2 M7's motors fading into each other was trippy 8:51
Ironic how the video is 1 hour and 25 minutes
Ive been on these trains millions of times
0:24 Wow that last car has a bad wheel...
not a bad wheel flat wheel
Man, I really like the horns of the M8s. I’m not sure why, it just sounds good.
Lol, it’s not really a horn
If it's not a horn, what is it? 0_o
The last remaining M2 they will be missed
Instead of always going to Grand Central on Tracks 2 and 4, and to other destinations on Tracks 1, and 3, they can run on whichever track they want, in both directions.

@@mitchtube00 they've been gone......

interessantes Video und Züge. Danke, Thank you
18:15 I wonder who forgot to turn off something..
lol marker lights
Front marker lights are used to indicate that the train is operating with fewer cars than normal, that could be what happened in that case
@@CrosstownXpressnope! That’s an 8 car train. A small train on metro north would be 5 cars.
1:25:12 what’s with the holdup
I can only imagine how much of a job it is to control the track switches with so many trains in the GCT tunnels at the same time
I'll miss you, New York!!! I'm Moving to TN
Excellent content as always 👍
Nice vídeo! Really interesting to see this variety of rolling stock! including this car train from MARC, would it be a test train?
No. As I understand it, there is no easy way for an engine crew to get out of an AMTRAK engine because of the tight clearances. There is apparently no "front door" on the engine. Cats, have you seen what Amtrak did to the noses on the engines?
The ones with the nose hatch do not need a cab car. The ones without do.

The lirr is nothing short of new to that, its dm30 and de30ac locos are definitely fitted with dual mode via third rail.
Good vidéo no boring bell song just like metra train in chicago😍 sorry for my english i am french😂

42:01 CBTC in metro north moment.
Nope, just how the signals are setup. It’s like this in a lot of the US.
41:58 how in the world did they do that? There’s no CBTC or moving block signaling on this system, right? And you definitely can’t do that with fixed-block signaling!
CBTC is for subways
This line has Cab Signals. So trains can follow one another in the same block with a Restricting Cab Signal.
Harlem - 125 Street ❤️❤️❤️
What's with the MARC driving car on the front of the Amtrak service at 21.45?

Is there an M2 being worked on for Bve?
Why is there a MARC pulling the empire exspress
why is there a MARC train? we're in New York not Maryland...
That P42 doesnt equip with nose hatch
why some of the diesel cars have names on it ???
Because years ago they had a contest where people wrote in and picked names and they voted for the best names that's why they were given names on the cars.
These trains should get local and express panels.

The Commuter Metro-North Train Takes People to Work.
Here's something I never understood. How are the M7 and M8 almost exactly alike but are made by two different companies at different timeframes?
Both are built by Kawasaki
@@christophermoore5657 M7 was made by Bombardier
Metro North probably gave Kawasaki the base design of the M7 so that they can go off of that when designing the M8s.
The M7s and M8s look nothing alike.
14:52 Why is there a MTA M3?
Since the video was posted 5 years ago, the M3A’s were still in service at the time of the recording.
What is that MARC/Amtrak consist at 21:37?
8:00 Is that loco diesel or electric ?
Hernán Matias both
it is both as it has a Diesel engine for places without third rail, but switches to third rail mode when there is one.
It's a dual mode it operates both Diesel and third rail

why they but the train in a oppsite path
They do push pull service so they dont have to turn the train around the on the end of the train is called a cab car you can control the train from there.
easier for turn around if the train ends up in a terminus station
Do you how much longer the M2s are going to be in service? I'm planning on going to try and see them during the PM rush very soon.
AFAIK, this is their last year.
Okay, thanks.
