I didn't realize that the thermal paste was a problem with the switch. My switch works just fine but would you recommend taking it apart and replacing the thermal paste?
The switches thermal setup seems to work just fine and doesn't seem to affect performance. The only thing replacing the past might do is reduce the fan noise a bit.
Steve you forgot the thermal paste lol. I'd love to get a broken switch to play and maybe try liquid metal or wet sanding the cooling to get even better contact, could be fun.
I don't fix things but enjoy these videos. Question for you guys: why is it important to change the thermal paste? Just to make sure it's applied correctly?
Thermal paste is all about transferring heat. As thermal paste ages it gets dry and doesn't transfer heat away from the chip as well. The other problem is that once you remove something that has thermal paste on it you will break the seal that it had and then it won't transfer heat as well either.
Are you sure a normal thermal paste is good for the back of the heat pipe? It does not seem to make direct contact with the backplate. The thermal paste may bleed out if that's the case. Maybe a thermal pad, or a gummy thermal paste like k5-pro would be better?
Only if the paste is dried out. Since I'll be selling these as refurbished I have a checklist of everything I do and that's one of the things so every one of these will have new thermal paste.
