Debbie was wonderful. I am the escort, Charles Panati, standing behind her when her name is announced. She was the sweetest - and I think prettiest - Miss America ever. A memorable night. The next morning, I left for NYC to begin graduate school in physics at Columbia U.

Debbie Bryant is and always will be my all-time favorite Miss America. I remember watching this at age 11 and falling madly in love with her.

She was a great Miss America. Her father was stationed in Vietnam at the time.

I'll never forget being in Kansas City's Muehlebach Hotel diner on the morning following a Kansas City Athletics-New York Yankees game some of us had come to Kansas City to watch the night before. It was the summer of 1965, and only a couple months before the Miss America competition. I was 16 at the time. I was seated facing the hotel side entrance, and happened to be looking in that direction when in walked the most stunningly attractive girl I'd ever seen. She was wearing a blue polka dot on white dress with a matching beret, and was escorted by a man wearing a business suit. It took all of about 10 seconds for everyone in there to notice her, and for the buzz to go throughout the place that she was Miss Kansas Deborah Bryant. As good as she looks in this video, I don't think that either the quality of the film or the stage lighting did anything to flatter her looks. She sat right across the aisle from us, which was a huge treat, although unfortunately our party left just a few minutes after she arrived. It was a huge thrill when she ended up winning the Miss America title shortly thereafter.

Wonderful Memories of when Young woman were femine and had poise. They cared about their appearance. Today's look is no makeup and work out spandex. That's style?

It's been a long time since I witnessed an interview fail like Indiana. To wait for an eternity and then come up with that response! 😲 I thought Florida might rate higher. She was pretty and had a decent interview for going first. Perhaps considered too short. Joan Crawford was radiant as a judge!

Miss South Carolina of 1965, Nancy Moore (9:19), was later married to Senator Strom Thurmond, who was way older than her. His first wife had also been a Miss South Carolina (1947) and had passed away in 1960. Nancy and Strom separated in the early 1990s and of course he died in 2003, aged 100.

And Nancy is living in Mt. Pleasant, SC. They had 4 beautiful children!

Nancy Moore was in law school, I believe, with my brother when all of a sudden she disappeared from law school. When everyone found out she had married Strom...it was a shock. I hope I got the story straight...Strom and I were related through my Father's side of the family.

Miss Kansas very cute and clever in the talent portion. Mississippi wow, beautiful blonde bombshell but I think Kansas deserved the crown.

Not only that, but Patricia Puckett, Miss Mississippi, was so gracious and warmly congratulated winner Deborah Bryant. It seems she was a very nice, warm person. I wonder if the two women ever became friends.
The judges, at least during this era, were almost always on the money as to who should become the winner. It isn't all about beauty here.

@@ValleyoftheRogue Me too. Patsy Puckett had the greatest beehive hairdo I've ever seen. She was a heavy favorite to win that year, it was a minor upset when Deborah won, but well deserved. Two of the best Miss America contestants ever IMO.
