During an interview the 1st runner up explained why she was so happy she ended up as 1st runner up. She wanted as much scholarship money as she could get without winning the title because she wanted to perform on Broadway. She succeeded in both goals 😍

There were several Bitterellas clapping and shaking their heads in the back, all of whom didn't make top 10 or any non-finalist award - it was evident live in the Hall but even visible on here - Idaho, Georgia, Kentucky, Rhode Island even make faces and shake their heads. Word has it, Carolyn's private interview was fine, talent passable to good - sexy and sold it, top in gown and swimsuit. She had a good chunk of the general audience (and many in the press) rooting for her actually.
Someone needs to put her lifetime movie on here.

Oh please!!!! Miss Hawaii that year was the rightful winner. She was witty, and gorgeous!! MISS New York and Miss Hawaii were great friends that's why she was very happy for her!
Was not the same without Bert Parks singing There She Is, Miss America when she walked the runway. He sang it for the last time at the 1991

That was the most excited 1st runner up I have ever seen. She seemed more excited than the actual winner. Lol
New York overreacted because she DID NOT want to win Miss America. Someone had posted saying "Miss New York did not want to win. She had set up plans to work at an opera house after her reign as Miss New York and winning Miss America would have "thrown a monkey wrench" into that plan, and there would have been no guarantee there would be room for her after she completed her reign."
Miss New York seemed more excited that Hawaii won than Carolyn did herself.
