I'll have to agree with that! Susan was just so stunning the year she won, her swimsuit has to be one of the top 5 swimsuits of all times, she had that natural beauty as well, she is definitely my favorite MA ,her and Mary Ann Mobley. Mississippi has always produced a lot of beautiful ladies year after year after year at MA, and they always place in top 10, top 5 or win.
I love the winner. I must say that the 1986 Miss America pageant was the best one ever to choose the 1987 Miss America. All the top ten girls were so exceptionally talented. I had no favorite talent that year because they were all so exceptional. I also love Gary Collins voice. I love when he and Miss America 1977 sang The Music Never Ends. What a fantastic show. One of the best ever.
Nice to see soon to be Kathie Lee Gifford co hosting with Gary Collins although I don’t know why his wife Miss America 1959 Mary Ann Mobley didn’t cohost with him . In 1990 the late Regis Philvin would take over Hosting from Gary Collins until 1996. And Kathie Lee would cohost then also. Beautiful Miss America winners in the 80s!!😊👌❤️🌸🌺🌼💐🌹❤️❤️
She was a double preliminary winner as well, swimsuit and talent. She was the favorite to win. The year before she, Kelly, won , Miss Missippipi Susan Akin won even tho Miss Ohio had won 2 preliminaries that year, she didn't even make the top 5 either, she was so shocked word had it. Goes to show you that winning a preliminary or 2 preliminaries doesn't give you the crown.
What the judges did in those days take a list of 15 women who they thought had all the overall qualities to be Miss Americas. The keyword here is OVERALL. Afterwards, the narrowed it down to 10 women who would go on to compete for the Miss America title.
I agree. But I like how they did in 1988 and 1989 were they stopped mid-staged, spun around and then went to the judges. HATED when they would turn in front of judges and out their butts right in judges faces.
Julie Russell and Kelly Cash were my favorites in this pageant but I like Julianne Smith too I was watching this pageants preliminary Talent competition and I wish they would have allowed New York to be in the finals New York had the best talent performance actually she just didn't make it to the finals.Miss Mississippi Kimberly McGuffie actually sounded like she was singing about a guy like it was all too personal.Texas Stephanie Simone has a real good voice All the girls are really beautiful.the talent part of Miss America is my very favorite part 1986 at some real good talent that year.
@@pageantsheyday Aside from Tennessee Texas Virginia and Arkansas I think they picked a lot of wrong girls to be in the top 10 seems like they favored mostly southern states that year not that I'm talking down Southern States because I'm from a Southern state North Carolina North Carolina I think was the only southern state that wasn't chosen in the top 10 .thanks a lot pageant Hay Day for posting these older Beauty pageants Ive really enjoyed them
@@BlueSkyFan77 Arkansas seemed like a non-finalist talent award as she was average and below in swimsuit and gown. In fact, I felt Alabama was stronger all the way around. I watched the prelims, and aside from interview which makes or breaks it, I think FL should have been in Top 10 and NH had to be the worst baton twirler ever.
@@pageantsheyday yes I went back to see that performance with New Hampshire in the preliminary video she seemed like she was having a hard time keeping up with the batons New York was the brunette who was dancing to Lucky Star by Madonna I think her name was Dawan McPeak.what did you think of her and Miss Iowa the blonde that look like Marilyn Monroe that sung someone to Watch Over Me ?
@@BlueSkyFan77 NY was perfect in swimsuit, her talent just didn't seem like a performance to me, just acrobatic moves. Her name is Dawan and someone posted videos of Miss TX pageants from 80's and she competed there a few times. Iowa- perfectly adequate.
Allegedly Miss Virginia didn't want to win and was thrilled to be 1st RU, Miss Texas looked much better in the years she competed before she won the title, they put her in an awful wardrobe and styled her badly.
Actually, VA didn’t THINK she would win. Kelley was a double prelim winner and the odds on favorite going into the finals. I saw a local morning talk show back in the day where Julianne was questioned about her surprise reaction at 1st RU. She was hoping for a top five placement but never expected 1st RU or the Title. She says that her reaction was one of true surprise & was just happy to make Top Ten.
I loved her talent, but she was average at best in other areas. TN wasn't my favorite either. I hated her gown, her swimsuit was meh and her voice cracked in talent. VA was great, TX was too different.

They all had perfect hair and makeup. I love the 80s decade with beautiful colors in makeup and gorgeous heavily sprayed hair.

Is it sexist of me to want the swimsuit portion to return? Have the young ladies wear modest one-piece suits. No string bikini's. Too tacky.

NY didn't even get a non-finalist talent award. I felt Florida was worthy of top 10.
