I agree 100%. There’s something so magical about it. The simplicity of the opening F minor theme is beautiful, but the 3:24’s more emotionally and technically complex variation is absolutely heart wrenching. You can almost hear the notes themselves weeping.
I beg to differ, my friends. I don't think you can get to this level without having studied tons of music theory, otherwise known as Harmony, counterpoint, orchestration and so much more. I other words there is an ocean of knowledge beneath the movement of the hands and that knowledge informs everything that The pianist does. For relative amateurs like me, who doesn't understand much more than basic chords, a lot of it IS muscle memory. But for musicians on this level the art must also be informed by the intellect.
