The Ballade, Op.23 is like a broad and passionate poem in three parts, the emotional core of which is a long 6/4 time moderato framed by a short lento and a presto con fuoco. The next one is dedicated to Schumann and opposes episodes filled with drive and vigour to moments of gentleness and even tenderness: the active and the contemplative, plenitude and feverish agitation. The Ballade in A flat major, Op.47 was the most famous of the four in its time, from its first public performance at Pleyel's in Paris on 21 February 1842. Less vehement and rich in contrasts than the first two, its effect lies in its charm and poetic cohesion. The Ballade in F minor is the most sumptuous. Its neo-Slavonic theme that keeps on returning in a new, richer shape, is first stated with lyrical tenderness in the introductory andante after which it becomes a nocturne. A second theme, in the form of a barcarolle, suddenly animates matters; it is developed in canon before linking up with the first theme, summarized in three great fortissimo chords. Five long muted chords reply to it before a ferocious coda bursting with action, dissonances and digital difficulty. In Indian classical music there is a word called Laya. Loosely, it means the lyrical cadence and a sense of flow created by how the rising and falling of notes are spaced and linked. Exactly as the inflections of human speech indicate emotions that are universally understood. So much emotion. So much feeling. The unhurried, deliberate spacing can only come from great control and musical authority. Surely as great a combination of musician and pianist as we've ever seen. His playing seems, at its best, so inevitable. The tone is among the deepest of all pianists'. I don't find his Chopin as idiomatic as some others' ... (though Richter would laugh at the idea that one should respect idiom) ... but it still has extraordinary sincerity and power. So much power. Again, that inevitability.

Trifinov and Kissin are not, in my humble opinion, even remotely of the calibre of Richter, and I doubt they would claim to be, let alone the very overrated Sokolov. The greats of the early 20C Russian school were pretty much in a class of their own. Zoltan Kocsis could be compared to Richter or Michelangeli, but I can't really think of anyone else in the last 50 years.or so
Richter's father Theofil Richter, a German national, was executed because he was unwilling to evacuate to the East. Thus, according to the red scumbags, "he was a collaborator, waiting for the German's arrival". The Richter's mother, with other man, evacuate with the German Army, feared of repercussions. After, they lived in Germany. The Richer's mother died c1961-62 in Germany. After illness and brief hospital stay, which was fully covered by Richter's money. Richter didn't know where exactly his mother was... until mid 50ies. Later they often meet, but Richter think of her like "for me, she is not the same person I knew".

Breathtaking interpretation...differentiated. Ballad number 1 is a kind of "Self-portrait" by Chopin, born in Poland, but with French musicality!
:)
Again, that inevitability.
brutal!
Todos esses pianista estam no meu face book

As orquestra de casamento destas bandas devem saber destas mensagens pois todas estas músicas estam no You tube.
So glad I could hear him live towards the end of his career. This type is only found in Trafinov and Kissin today…
Trifinov and Kissin are not, in my humble opinion, even remotely of the calibre of Richter, and I doubt they would claim to be, let alone the very overrated Sokolov. The greats of the early 20C Russian school were pretty much in a class of their own. Zoltan Kocsis could be compared to Richter or Michelangeli, but I can't really think of anyone else in the last 50 years.or so
May I respectfully include young Russian pianist Alexander Malofeev. He is coming up fast!

Great performance - but the audience noise is terrible....
That's true but the music wins
I enjoy the audience noise - it makes it feel live. Especially excessive coughing.
7:20 chill 😖
In the text: it's Grange de Meslay (not "du")
Heinrich Neuhaus also did not feel the need to evacuate Moscow...
? Why aren't krystian zimerman's albums in your channel?
This was live????
The Sesi Aercarvalho of 2006 know this is it. Um city of São Paulo.
One more sucess of Orquestra jazz sinfônica is to play in piano all as obras of Chopin in piano
I'm curious how you handle the legal aspect of this? Aren't these all copyrighted recordings?
Niche recording of a niche live performance from 50 years ago from a well known pianist in niche genre provided by a niche record label. Doubt anyone there cares.
@@milton3204 The small label Praga that is selling the same recordings might...
Could he play the coda of the F minor ballade any faster and bang harder? I glad you all think this is a reference recording... pas moi
those coughs absolutely kill it LOL never fails to ruin legendary performances.smh
Unquestionably, there are gorgeous sections; but there are also portions that are bombastic and way too fast to make sense.
You are correct.
Let them be chaos, brute force. Like the coda of the fourth.

Nr. 1 - better than Horowitz …
It's not right to say that anyone is "better than Horowitz." Not possible. Different, yes - but not better.
