Dave's basically spent his entire career on the outside looking in. Now there's a company run by guys that idolize him, and he's clearly not able to judge it without a huge bias. Just look at how he reacted to the Matt Hardy concussion versus the way Bryan Alvarez did on the same podcast.
Also, I'm not sure how he ever gets anything done because he apparently spends 90% of his time on Twitter tracking down people to argue with. Most of which don't even at or mention him.

Meltzer has to be getting paid. Nobody is this biased for no reason.

    • @wloffblizz
      @wloffblizz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

I've been convinced he's being paid for months now, and it boggles my mind how that's not obvious to everyone. From the way he blatantly gives all AEW matches 2 stars more than any similar WWE match, to the way he always tries to blatantly spin every single bit of criticism or every single mistake AEW makes in an objective light, to the way he spontaneously jumps in on random Twitter conversations to defend AEW for no reason, to the way he's constantly blabbering about "demo ratings" and finding these weird obscure stats like "AEW just broke their own record of most watchers per household" and posts them like they're somehow supposed to be news.
Either Dave's being paid by Khan, or he's figured out his subscriber base consists of 100% AEW fanboys who want to hear him say nice things about AEW and would cancel their subscriptions if he started saying mean things about them on occasion. Which isn't at all better, cause that just means he's an UNPAID shill instead of a paid one.
But it's 100% one of those two options. Nothing else makes remotely any sense. Dave's favoritism towards AEW is so blatant, he sounds like a PR rep rather than a critic or a journalist.

I tweeted to Meltzer a few days ago - maybe a week ago. This is the full exchange:
Meltzer tweeted: "If something in wrestling does significantly better than expected when it comes to interest levels in many different ways, it's probably beneficial to examine why as opposed to deny it happened."
I replied with: "Does this include having the most prominent reporter in the field constantly pushing an alternative as better (when that's questionable), to a sycophantic fanbase? That should be examined then too, instead of denying it's happening, right?"
Now, I didn't think too much about it, since it was just a flippant tweet - I didn't believe Meltzer is on the payroll of AEW (that's the company I was refencing in my comment) - like Brian Last, I believe that is the style he likes the most. Meltzer did reply to my tweet, I didn't get a chance to read it, since I don't live on Twitter - but I did see it. When getting some time to reply, I had found it had been deleted. Now I do wonder.
TL;DR story: I tweeted about Meltzer being looked into for AEW ties, as a joke mind you. He replied, then deleted it.

@Jt Money I lost you, poor baby, you're lost. Call your mama. Many matches are inspired by a japanese/Indy style where you're reckless, you make dangerous, useless moves to get a pop instead of using psychology with a safer style. And the dangerous style often doesn't even look real. Preposterous. Darby is close from a strong stupid style because of the disregard for his own body, because you gotta make it real and you don't know how to get over so you actually do shit for real. People died in Japan because of 'working' not safely. People injured their neck. They shorten their carreer, they shorten their life to get over with the marks, to get virtual stars. Omega can work comedy and a ddt style but also a njpw strong style. Same for Mox who loves unsafe matches. What i'm talking about it's not knowning how to work, not knowning psychology, not knowning how to sell, not selling moves, putting your body through hell, doing dangerous stuff instead of working. Doing acrobatic & idiotic choregraphed sequences that don't even look real and that are dangerous. People falling on their head left and right, thousands of dives. By strong style you can englobe everything that is wrong in the way of not knowning how to work safely. Aew shows are full of useless dangerous moves. The examples are endless.

Couldn't agree more with Jim. Anyone who listens to his podcasts will see that Jim criticises WWE/NXT every bit as much as AEW, he just notes they don't do the same amount of idiotic/embarrassing stuff. He also praises any segments that make sense, are produced well/performed well, irrespective of the company. Meanwhile, Dave will have barely a word to say about a good NXT, gives a constant negative spin to anything WWE-themed, and jumps to the defence of some of the most ridiculous AEW segments imaginable.
Any journalist (and I am one myself) that goes on a boat trip that stages a company he is supposed to be reporting on is sacrificing his integrity. The way he guffaws over the All Elite comedy is also flat out embarrassing - listening to him recap it is like scratching nails on a chalk board. And this from a journalist who was once considered the best in his business, and who Jim has consistently praised over the years for the quality of his factual reporting.
If you enjoy AEW, good for you. If you like WWE/NXT, great. I personally like NXT as it's semi serious (but not without flaws itself) and can't abide the rest. But as a journalist you need to be able to take a step back and apply the same critical standard to all products. On this, Dave fails. He is entitled to like what he likes, but dumb comedy on one show is dumb comedy on either show. And 900k (on a good week) viewers for a show that contains former multiple-time WWE champion Chris Jericho, former WWE champion Dean Ambrose (Moxley), and guys who have been in the upper midcard of WWE for years like Jack Swagger (Hager), Matt Hardy, Luke Harper (Brodie Lee), Goldust (Dustin Rhodes), Cody Rhodes, Rusev (Miro), The Revival (FTR) and so on... is not some staggering, "changing the business" performance. NXT has how many ex-WWE stars on its show consistently? Finn Balor, yes, a former Universal champion, Breezango, a lower card tag team, and now Ember Moon? Am I missing anyone? Yet Dave jumps on WWE for occasionally using a main roster talent on the show, like the Sasha Banks/Charlotte appearances earlier this year, as though it's somehow unethical. Ultimately, AEW, with a swathe of ex WWE main roster talent, is beating a developmental show by around 200k. And this is the business we should all be paying attention to?
Wake up Dave. It's a ridiculous television show, with a niche audience that is nothing like the sports-based product it promised to be. It's not an alternative to WWE, it's WWE-lite. It's the 2020 version of TNA. Let's hope one day... one day... some "real" competition gives fans who no longer watch Raw or Smackdown (and that includes me, for the last two+ years... and I watched them previously for 25+ years) a genuine alternative.

Dave going on the boat isn’t such a issue, BUT going on the cruise and telling people you didn’t pay and got it for free is another as then your not really gonna crap on it or they won’t have you back next year
I TOTALLY agree about the star power thing you said, I’ve been saying the exact same thing yet AEW hardcores don’t get it and just go garganos a big name coles a big name ciampas a big name...... yes they are in the hardcore wrestling community to the wider audience they are no one ( harsh but true )
I love when they go having sasha bayley rollins or someone come on NXT for a one of “isn’t NXT”
I just point out that while on the network orton too cool RVD cena Batista and even the demo god himself jericho have all been on NXT
They don’t get that basically Jericho moxley cody dustin hagar FTR Matt brodie jr tazz Schiavone all have a wider audience pull
It’s basically putting orton AJ rollins USO’s Jeff ziggler Micheal cole the king all on NXT full time..... and if they did NXT would win every week

I'm also curious if some Wrestling TH-cam channels are paid by AEW. Like Wrestletalk for a while had all their video titles something like "More WWE Controversy", "NXT Stars Not Happy", "Vince Mcmahon Losing It", etc. It just seems like they tried to focus only on the bad of WWE and NXT. Then from what I've seen in general they give AEW a 4/5 rating during the week. I know the titles get them views so it makes sense, but there seems to be some favouritism there for a "news" channel, at least more than they used to be. I may be wrong though, I try not to look too far into it because wrestling these days is subjective of course.

Billionaires have several "subsidiary/shell" companies to move money through - and good PR doesn't create itself.
Many of the bigger TH-camrs have "management teams" they work for, so why not Khan create one for wrestling....

People may read what you're saying and think "this is a dumb conspiracy theory", but I think there's a lot of truth to it. When AEW first started, several wrestling TH-camrs were invited to the tapings. They were vlogging the whole time. It's one thing to go there and cover an event because you're a journalist. It's another to be courted by the company and made to feel special. You're more inclined to promote them positively after that. One of the TH-camrs was even asking for a job on his channel. His name was Sherwood (?) or something. Short, chubby guy who does a Talk Soup style show. Anyway, I saw a lot of kiss assing going on within the TH-cam wrestling community when AEW started.

When you watched the attitude era it had you hooked you could just binge watch episode after episode but now you struggle to get through a 3 hour raw

Alot of people don't like what jim says, but hes usually right most of the time. People use to rally against Jim when he shat on Joey Ryan...look how that turned out.

Omega/okada was given 6 stars and it wasnt 6 stars, it was maybe a 4. Id have to agree with Jim, i dont get what anyone sees in kenny Olivier or fingerbang magee, whatever were calling him now.

@v b a 5 star match is supposed to represent the epitome of what a wrestling match should be. The build-up to the match should have selling power, something that makes you think "i cant miss this" and they definitely had that with okada/omega.
The reason i cant even give it a perfect 5, much less a 6, is because there were too many moments where i was disinterested. The match was a drawn out mess of high spots and typical strong style moments.
I know wrestling is subjective but i think Bryan Danielson has had better matches than kenny omega has. If you havent seen him vs claudio castagnoli(cesaro but with long hair) then its worth your time.
