      Here in northern Delaware, we have the "Christina River" and the "Christina School District," both named after Queen Christina of Sweden. We also have a town and a high school named "Christiana," which is/was an error and/or a misspelling. Swedes were among the first European settlers in this particular area of Delaware, in the 1600's.

      Wasn't she a terrible Monarch?
      Bankrupted Sweden with her lavish projects (Majority of which are now on Rome)
      Over promoted the Nobility which gave them power in a era of centralization
      Ruined Sweden's prestige as the leader of the protestant world.
      Most of the domestic ruling and diplomacy is more of the work axel Oxenstierna than her

    I think there have been a lot of queer royalty over the centuries. My favorites were the ancient Chinese ruler Wu Zetian, who styled herself “Emperor”, as well as the Russian empress Catherine II, who was a well-known bisexual and earned the title “The Great”.

      Not sure about Wu here. She was called Emperor because she was probably the first (and only woman) to rule China in her own right rather than as regent/behind the curtain. It’s the same reason Maria Theresa was sometimes called King.

    I'm surprised how many foreign films during the Hays Code era tried to follow these rules. But then again, US films do the same thing when trying to sell in China, so I shouldn't be as surprised.

    There was a play called King Kristina/Alexander some years ago here in Sweden. It claimed to be based on actual letters in which Kristina preferred the name Alexander and he/him pronouns. She/he also apparently tried to alter her/his sex characteristics using alchemy. I have no idea if these letters exist or how accurate the depiction is, but reading about it was very validating to me in my own transgender journey. I am also angry that none of Kristina’s queerness was mentioned in school, despite learning quite a lot about her/him.

    The 2016 film The Girl King is one of my favorites! I've watched it so many times that I finally downloaded it from Amazon Prime in case they ever decide to remove it. It does take some liberties with the actual history but it's visually stunning, hits all the important points in Kristina's upbringing and reign, has an engaging and entertaining story and script, and the costumes are TO DIE.

    Kristina! Thank you for telling her story, I think she would be proud to know that she still fascinates and inspires people to this day. I’ve been researching her for five out of the ten years that I’ve known of her so far and even in the very same languages she knew, I keep it on a blog and it’s all about her. As an autistic person I’ve been able to relate to her a lot and her example of how she lived and loved has even helped me discover and understand myself a little better too. I’ve also learned some about her mother and she really wasn’t insane or as completely “broken” as she’s too often said to be and her relationship with Kristina wasn’t as strained as its reputation claims either.

      I had the joy of attending the University of California at Santa Cruz, California during the mid-1980’s where a Women’s Studies curriculum existed. Among the available courses was one called “Lesbian Women” and another called “Introduction to Feminism” taught by Professor Bettina Apteker, a Lesbian Jewish woman who had been active in the Civil Rights movement. She was (is?! It’s been 40+ years) an extraordinary, courageous, gentle and utterly empathetic woman, always genuine, truthful and razor sharp in her lectures. Her course was attended by 50 plus students, both female and male (other gender assignments were not in use at that time) at each meeting. She was hugely respected and frequently adored - including by me! I wish that everyone could experience such a teacher who was always an inspiration! My life has been infinitely blessed by knowing her.

    What is interesting about Sweden's present Royal Family is that Sweden was the first constitutional monarchy that is absolute premogeniture, first born becoming the monarch which makes the current heir apparent Crown Princess Victoria.

    • @MiljaHahto
      @MiljaHahto 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Indeed just the present day Sweden - the law was changed after Victoria was born (but not her siblings). King Carl Gustav has in the past expressed his dissatisfaction over the fact, he'd prefer prince Carl Philip to be the heir - apparently just because the gender issue.

    • @Divig
      @Divig 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@MiljaHahtoCarl Philip had been born when the law changed, and the reason why the king was/is against Victoria being crown princess is not her gender but that it took the title away from her brother.

    • @Filecabinet0170
      @Filecabinet0170 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Also of side interest here is that the current Queen was a commoner before her marriage and the Crown Princess also married a commoner. Their daughter, the future Queen, will only be of 1/4 ‘royal blood’ so to speak. If she marries a commoner as well it’s essentially a new Dynasty; that child would be only 1/8 of noble ancestry. Add that to the fact the current king Carl XVI Gustaf is of the House of Bernadotte, a fairly new Dynasty as royalty goes, which descends from a commoner who rose to a high military rank, was given a title by Napoleon and then adopted by the heirless Swedish King of the time. He was only otherwise ‘related’ to a royal family by an eventual marriage to sister-in-law of Napoleon’s brother.
      In other words, they certainly mastered any Habsburg inbreeding issues by widening the gene pool substantially. Heja Sverige!
      Yes probably TLDR, but something I’ve studied so just passing it on. 😉

    I grew up in Sweden, and I am disappointed we learned nothing of this in history class. I can't speak for everyone, but in my experience we had quite exstensive courses on Swedish history and I remember learning about Kristina several times. The gender nonconformity, affectionate letters and rumors of sapphic behavior were never mentioned.
    As a young "not like other girls", I think it would've helped me greatly to hear about Kristinas possibly queer behaviours. Normalizing it in a historical context could have helped me realize my own queerness sooner. I really wish we would have had the discussion about how we can never know the identities of historical figures as well. It translates so well into teaching people not to assume living people's identities.
    Jessica, thank you for what you do! I wish you and your family all the best ❤

      Probably has something to do with the fact that she was labelled as a "Traitor" by the Swedish State up until the House of Vasa was eventually replaced by the Bernadottes.
      She bankrupted Sweden, Over promoted to many people into the aristocracy which eventually lead to said aristocrats to gain power and divide Sweden against all her enemies and converted to Catholicism which during the time was both traitorous as Sweden was the Protector of the Protestant Faith and undid what her father did while most of her diplomacy is more the work of her prime minister.

    On a side note: The "German" subtitles are horrid. They jump from the formal "you" (Sie) to the informal you ("du") all the time, translate a lot of things completely wrong and just annoy the heck out of anybody. IDK if it was done by some kind of "auto translation", but it feels very much so. Better add a big fat warning sign about this (ie. "BEWARE: machine-translated German subtitles"), because wrong and bad translation is worse than having to eg. reduce play speed of the video to better understand whats going on.

    I loved the sorta recent movie The Girl King. It was a fair portrayal of Kristina bc it showed all the expectations put upon her. It stiffled her. And her mother was a monster. Didn't you feel that the Catholic Church was portrayed as a bit more progressive than Swedish Protestants recent science, etc?

      Catholicism is generally more lenient as long as your not stepping into major heresy or contradicting the SOF, Scholastic traditions and theology is a major part of Roman Catholicism which the protestant churches tried to undermine however Calvanism haven't really aged well unlike the other mainline Protestant Denominations even her reformed branches still have very literalist beliefs on the bible and the big predestination elephant in the room.

    I've been really enjoying these historical profiles recently, but to be honest this one doesn't feel quite as professional. For one thing, the subtitles are all over the place, often not lining up with what's being said, and even including whole sentences that aren't spoken at all, as well as vice versa. I found that quite confusing and difficult to follow. Plus the timeline seemed all over the place, and kept jumping around for no apparent reason without seeming very clear about when we were talking about. But the subtitles were the biggest problem, very odd. It felt like I was reading and hearing two different versions of the script.

      I just want to point out that neither myself or Jessica used the word “insane”. I also didn’t call my own mother that - I just used “weird” as that described someone acting contrary to how a mother would treat children.

      She is seen as a Traitor up until the modern era.
      She bankrupted Sweden
      Destroyed the social fabric of Swedish society by over promoting people into the nobility which made said nobility powerful in the era of centralization.
      Converted to Catholicism which was a insult to what her father fought for and ruined the prestige of Sweden as the leader of the protestant world.
      Many of the achievements attributed to her is more due to her prime minister which is more fondly remember than her (again, up until the modern age)
