- Some people live on their wits; in this video we meet a curious mix of characters destined to be the “also rans” of life. Join me in the Yorkshire countryside and re-trace their parts in this record-breaking TV sitcom.
The year 2023 marks 50 years since the pilot and first series of “Last of the Summer Wine” were broadcast. This series of videos is filmed in many of the well-known, and some less well-known, locations seen in the programme.

The "Summer Wine Decanted" book is available on Amazon: www.amazon.co.... and many online book sellers - and now from the Wrinkled Stocking Tearoom, Holmfirth.

still watch it every night, its a pity they dont repeat first of the summer wine.
Hi Colin, I'm watching it now! I'm sure it's not due to contractual issues that "First" doesn't get repeated, but - overall - very few sitcoms do get repeated.
Great video and great series keep up the good work.
Glad you're enjoying it!
I'm enjoying these Leigh. I've watched MOST of "LOTSW". I'm catching up though. I'm American and although we had a Few British shows here like "Keeping Up Appearances" and "Are You Being Served" it's only in the last decade, thanks to the Internet, that I discovered "Last".
Hi Pontiac, pleased you're enjoying the videos!
Thank You…..Thank You…..Thank You!! A new subscriber/follower from Greenville, Darke County, Ohio USA.
Thanks for subscribing Dennis! We have made many more "Last of the Summer Wine" videos, and more related videos on the way!
Always full of great information its a shame that most of the characters have passed away
Thanks! We can still watch them on tv and DVDs, there's always something to enjoy!
I so look forward to these. Cheers!
Outstanding once again 👏👏👏👏👏 cheers from new🥝🥝🥝zealand on a chilly🥶🥶☔️☔️☔️winters evening where it’s 🍺🍺🍺🍺o’clock 😜😜
This was excellent thank you from New Zealand 😊😊😊😊
Interesting stuff Leigh, good job!
Another good one, keep them coming 👍👍👍
Really enjoying your informative videos. Thank you for taking the time. ❤
Thank you, "Bass"! Lots more videos planned...
are we going to see a video on the stalwart protectors of the Holmfirth "patch"? two of my favorite episodes are when Auntie Wainwright "sold" them a motorcycle and Edie terrorized them.
Yes, fairly soon!
@@upstagedbyadog i'll be here

Thank you Roger, glad you enjoyed it!
@@upstagedbyadog yes been watching it today. Think I've just got pub one to watch. Thank you for taking the time to make the videos
Will be getting your book today, looking forward to reading the book too.
Thanks Catherine, hope you enjoy it!
Hi Leigh watched the man who nearly knew Pavarotti and Auntie said to Smiler being forceful and executed Hyacinth said the same line in keeping up appearances to Richard 😀
@@Scotty19 well spotted!
To me Smiler and aunty Wainwright blended in well unlike the other 3.
I think Aunty brought something new to the show, and facilitated a lot of the stories with her ability to have just the right thing to sell or hire. Having Smiler gave her a foil and helper. But, I have to agree, that - despite best intentions - Tom and co., didn't quite work.
@ Thanks , I did and don’t want to offend any fans, it’s just my opinion and glad you agree.
Hi ya Leigh hope you are well and I really liked Smiler years I watch now and then it’s nice he does Blakey impression oh oh 🤣
I don't know if he just couldn't help doing it - or if Alan Bell or Roy Clarke thought it would be a funny call-back!
Great series! However according to Wikipedia Tom Owen died on the 7th November 2022, not on the 8th October. Which is correct? 🤔
Most of the press reports of his death were on 8 Nov 2022, but none of them gave a date, people assumed it was the day before. I don't rely on details on Wiki.
Until now, I had no idea what Smiler's real name was! Too bad the Mrs. Avery character was written-off; in appearance Mrs. Avery reminded me of a younger version of lumpy, domineering women like Nora and Ivy. I don't recall Tom's daughter Babs ever speaking in any of the episodes she was in! She sort of wandered around, looking a pregnant zombie. You can tell the writers had no idea what to do with Babs. Her eye makeup suggested "Punk", but her clothes and hair were anything but.
I think, if Kathy Staff had needed to leave the show earlier, Mrs A would have ben an ideal candidate to carry on in her place. Bab's was Mr's A's niece, no relation to Tom.
I liked the Mrs. Avery character as well. I wonder why she left?
@@FrancoiseBonnefoy1 Some facebook group about LOTSW has a 2012 comment (this isn't the exact quote from Julie and I can't locate the article online) : "I didn't like Mrs. Avery in Last of the Summer Wine. I enjoyed the cast and crew but didn't like the director" so it looks like a fall out with Alan Bell was the reason she left.
@@DMfilmfan Thanks for this.
Apparently (according to the Daily Mail, 22 June 2012) Julie T Wallace did not get on with director, Alan J W Bell.
