Trivia: Series 21 to 25 | Summer Wine Decanted

  • In this video we will look at some of things you probably didn’t know or hadn’t noticed before - from continuity errors to behind-the-scenes secrets in series 21 to 25.
    Sadly, Bill Owen died during filming for series 21. It was already known he was unwell, so some scenes were re-written to reduce his time on screen. Roy Clarke then had the unenviable task of dealing with the Bill Owen's passing. Rather than just write him out of the show, he chose to create a trilogy of episodes where Compo dies, is mourned and has a funeral. It is some of the best comedy television writing in history. It also gave the actors and characters closure.
    The year 2023 marks 50 years since the pilot and first series of “Last of the Summer Wine” were broadcast. This series of videos is filmed in many of the well-known, and some less well-known, locations seen in the programme.

    Nice video Leigh I liked Mrs Avery shame she left due to fall out with director i often watch Mrs Avery episodes i like her rivalry with Nora with there house work.

      I know a lot of people did not like Mrs Avery. I think she would have made a good replacement for Nora, which Stella did in series 30 and 31. Stella's appearance was more organic, she was Nora's sister, but it would have been nice to have her in reserve to be able come back.

    Thora Hird is a bit underappreciated in this show , I think her character is one of the best.. always reminds me of my mum & nan with the fake posh voice 😂

      Even though she is advancing in years in later series, that is true to the character, and she still delivers with matriarchal authority!

    1:11 I loved the whole subplot of Ros/Roz and the history of her estrangement from her sister Edie. I’m glad they didn’t just throw her into the series with no explanation of where she was for all those years. 10:56 Probably one of the most poignant episodes written after Bill’s death. For once, Norman was the center of attention. 13:22 one of the funniest subplots of the later years - Glenda and Marina advise each other how to dress. Maybe Edie’s shielding Glenda from “sordid” things like Howard-and-Marina resulted in her not treating Marina with disdain, like the other ladies did.

      Of course Dora Bryan was no stranger to the morally ambiguous role, and her gleeful giggle remembering past dalliances had not changed since her early days in films! There needed to be a reason for us not knowing about Roz and this was an inventive and original device. I'm pleased Clegg got a couple of episodes mostly about him, considering that Peter Sallis would soon be taking a bit of a back seat in the show. Certainly Glenda was somewhat shielded from the subjects the older ladies considered inappropriate … and Marina does wear nice shoes!

    My headcanon about Compo's still living relatives, Gordon, Chip and family, is that they moved away, probably emigrated to the places like the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

    Thanks, great incite here into Compo's last few episodes. In some scenes the double was very evident like in the drinking scene in France with the landlord. I was thinking that it was Compo's double in the scene from Under the Rug there the Thursday's was introduced which would be used again in the Fallen Wellies trilogy.

    • @upstagedbyadog
      @upstagedbyadog  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Pleased you enjoyed the video, Donal. There are "give-aways" that a double is being used, mainly, hiding the actors face... which is what was done in those scenes.

    I saw Wharmby street in an episode and thought it was a pretend street name as a tribute, surprised there for a moment to see it as a 'real' street name. The Goodbye Compo tribute was really moving when it was originally on, there must be many more tributes that I've missed. Really enjoying this, keep the coming, and enjoy a coffee.

    great upload leigh
    my favorite seasons in the show were series 22-29(exc the episodes with audrey-i hate this episode as this one time character is center of attention) and boothroyd(another character i hated)
    it would have been interesting in the later seasons of the show what wesley's role would have been if gordon hadn't passed away but i think he would have had either more storylines with barry/glenda-after thora hird death or wesley would have joined the trio(when clegg role started to decrease)

    • @upstagedbyadog
      @upstagedbyadog  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Tenielle, pleased you're enjoying the videos. I'm sure many people had little time for any number of the one-off characters, who were usually brought in as "disruptors" to "make" a story happen. I think it's just like everyone one has a least favourite chocolate in the Milk Tray selection! If Gordon Wharmby had still been in the show we would never have had Entwistle in series 24, who - really - was only there to provide transport. That would have been a shame, although I think Burt Kwouk was under used. It would certainly have meant that Barry and Glenda might have more to do, and you never know, they might have had time to give Wesley a grandchild!

      Summer Wine was his last TV appearance, he worked continuously from 1953, mostly in tv, in comic and serious roles. He was frequently on Harry Hill's shows and The Basil Brush Show!

    I'm sure I remember seeing the ladies practicing their cabaret number before going off to tragically surprise Compo, and I saw it on New Jersey public television (not sure what year). Perhaps it was at a later date that the lawyers put a stop to playing the song for copyright reason.

    Hi Leigh just watched all of Florrie episode when the lads picked up Marina in Entwistle truck I noticed the driver was Entwistle stunt man not Entwistle I’m getting clever at noticing stunts 😀

    • @upstagedbyadog
      @upstagedbyadog  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The very brief view of "Entwistle" does not look like Burt! It is noticeable how they avoid showing the drivers side of the van cab throughout that scene!

    Hi Leigh I watched why is Barry at an angle and while the lads was with Barry at pub the pub lights was so bright where they sat it might be the studio lights to the white horse

    • @upstagedbyadog
      @upstagedbyadog  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I will have to re-watch that bit. They often light location interiors with a lot of studio lights shining through windows to give a realistic effect of daylight.

    • @upstagedbyadog

      The Daily Mail article does not give any more info. The article was to promote a BBC3 comedy series called "Dead Boss". She says she had difficulty getting work: "I’d love to bury She Devil and be in EastEnders, Emmerdale or Coronation Street and have tried to get parts in them. But I’m told I’m still too famous for She Devil. I won’t stop knocking on their doors though!" - I would have thought the Summer Wine role was a great opportunity to shake off the "She Devil" and get her other parts, but she had few roles after Summer Wine.

      The BBC have a huge library of their own sound effects, so you will hear familiar sounds. One that amuses me is a sound of a car stopping and the doors opening / closing (eg: in series 3 episode 1 of "The Good Life" The Early Birds) were not only frequently used on tv, but also included on a BBC Sound Effects vinyl record for free amateur use!
