  • In this video I remove the seats and some trim along with all carpets from the green beat-up OBS Chevy truck. I clean then spray them with a couple coats of Duplicolor vinyl and fabric spray. The seat and carpet came out fantastic! As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

    Very nice job. I just bought a 76 Thunderbird that I'm changing the interior color on but I'm just getting a new carpet, The carpet in mine is in good condition but with such a large carpet area it's going to cost me more to clean and dye it then is to just replace it with a new carpet. I'm still going to dye door panels, seats and trim though because that's definately cheaper than replacing them with new. I am going to revinyl the dash cover a and make a new package tray. it was originally Green and my seats are vinyl with fabric inserts and I'm going to 2 tone it, the fabric is going Cinnabar, which is Cinnamon color and the vinyl and plastic is going to a Beige color. The car is already white and I'm going to repaint it white but I'm taking the white vinyl top off and going to paint the roof something close to the Cinnamon color I get for the interior because... well why not.

      That makes sense to me, sounds like a cool project your working on. I too went for new carpet on the next project my s10. The budget was higher, also after a year I had to touch up where my shoes always moved around on the floor by the peddle. The non touched parts are all like new. The rubbed bits under my sneakers faded a tiny bit after alittle over a year. As for cost 6 cans was half the price of the new carpet. For a cheap beater fix I would still clean and dye. For a long term keeper I would buy new. Live and learn 👍

      @@thisoldhooptie Nice, I don;t really have "Budget" persay I just want to do stuff the most cost effective and simplest way possible, I'm not doing a 500 point restoration, I'm basically knocking the dirt and rust off it and building an above average daily driver that I can take to Cruise-ins and Cars and Coffees. I wasn't going to go with new carpet but my carpet is twice if not more than the S-10 carpet, I figured for 3 coats it was going to take 12-15 cans of dye to just do the carpet, just the dye is is $140ish, plus what I would pay in cleaning supplies I figured another $20 for that plus the water to clean it and the time invested just isn't worth it when I can get a new molded carpet for $180 including shipping, that's 10% more for something that's brand new and I don't have to worry about it again.

    How many cans did it take you? I'm considering doing the same on my S10. Interior is three different colors and very dirty. Would love to have everything black. Did the fabric on the seats get stiff at all? I have some light gray Cavalier buckets and my center console is dark blue.

    • @thisoldhooptie
      @thisoldhooptie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The seats get stiff but softened as they were rubbed and used. I dont remember the amount used. I think it was 12 or 14 for the whole thing plastics, seats, carpets. The carpet and seats took the most. It was still cheaper then new carpet. Since you have an s10 it will be less then the c1500 I did here. I would start with the carpet after a real good cleaning see if it's for you. My carpets, plastics, and seats still look as they did in these videos. I use the seats in my garage I got new ones with lumbar support and a console.

      I have used rit dye to make multi colored shirts 30 years ago. I washed those for years after, the rit dye i used was permenant. It can be messy but what isn't? I just looked it up, it seems it does fade over time. Guess I was lucky. The new version is better then the old as far as fading goes. But its not listed as a permanent dye. Learn something new every day.

    • @thisoldhooptie
      @thisoldhooptie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Other then my fingers since we did the t-shirts outside not much of a mess. My experience was different, the t-shirts lasted years. You know the tiedye ones. According to what i just read it can fade . I dont think it washes off but if nothing enough is used maybe caused a problem. We let our stuff soak a long time that was key.
      I'm adding this so its all in one place:
      RIT DYE
      Rit dye, which is a multi-purpose union dye, is versatile, easy to use and nontoxic. You can dye natural fibers like cotton, linen, wool, silk and also rayon and nylon fabric. Cotton blends with polyester or spandex will dye lighter and less intense.
      There are many colors and you can easily mix them to get custom colors.
      The downside with Rit compared to fiber reactive dyes is the colors are less intense and not as colorfast. (That means it can fade or be removed)
      DYLON DYE
      Dylon permanent dye is a fiber reactive dye, meaning it reacts chemically with cellulose found in cotton, rayon and silk to create a permanent bond. It won’t fade and the colors will be more intense than rit dye.

    • @thisoldhooptie
      @thisoldhooptie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Trust me when I say looking at it from 10 feet away it was ok. When your close or in it and could see the cigarette burns, cracks, Fading, permanent stains, you would feel different. The door panels would literally come apart when I closed it from the inner handle. That being said since I'm restomodding the whole exterior and engine bay it would look strange with a beat up interior. I have new custom seats coming with lumbar and foam that you don't sink through. They are being built now. The inside needs to match the outside a mix of new and old. Thanks for joining the project :)
