This is my first contact with Yuan Sheng. He is a young Chinese pianist, with studies in China, Manhattan, and advanced training under the renowned Bach interpreter Rosalyn Tureck . From Tureck he has perfected a crystalline, intellectual, sober approach to Bach. His style has some echoes of Glenn Gould in the schematic, architectonic, unsentimental playing. This is an eye-opener. Rosalyn Tureck will always remain the goddess among Bach interpreters. Yet, most of her recordings were made in the mono era. Here, we can hear surely one of her best pupils playing Bach with a purity and stylistic accuracy that do his teacher proud. Prof Sheng does not allow his personality or emotions to come between the music and the listener. No wonder some commentators compared him to Brendel, who manages to do the same for Beethoven. It is amazing that at no point does one feel that there is display of virtuosity. Equally, there is no affectation or preciosity (sorry about using these big words that are often used in music reviews). This is art that conceals art. It is ironic that we hear so little from this piano professor based in Beijing, who has so much to teach the world, while most people think that Lang is the best Chinese pianist.
I was fortunate to hear Yuan Sheng play Chopin beautifully in Firenze in April. Listening to this recording he's now become one of my favorite interpreters of Bach!
For many years I have been thinking that Glenn Gould's interpretation of the French Suites was the nec plus ultra. And now this. I am completely addicted to Yuan Shen's approach to J.S. Bach. It's got all the warmth, transparency and natural understanding of tempi, which I had missed without knowing that all this can be found in this music If only Mr. Sheng plays it.
Yuan Sheng is a truly amazing pianist; he deserves far more recognition by the general public in my humble opinion. He is absolutely amazing; he is able to make music of such wonderfully composed pieces. I have had the pleasure of attending a few of his masterclasses; he is a phenomenal teacher as well!

Fluid, like a river flowing seamlessly, unhindered by elements beyond control. Satisfying to the greatest heavenly heights and even though life may be foreboding, this music so graciously, bravely and brilliantly written by Bach, gives a rational of hope...
The sarabande in the first suite is totally poignant (but not at all gushing with sentimentality). An extraordinary achievement in balancing lyricism with control. The tempo is spot on. I can't stop listening to this.
I absolutely love the Sarabande of Bach's French Suite no.6. Especially the opening!!! Absolutely gorgeous to listen to. Shout out to the pianist YUAN SHENG!!!!!!!!!
I will add to the chorus of praise: I really appreciate this beautiful performance, especially the way the performer captures the balance of feelings and clarity that the music of Bach conveys, and which allows what Bach considered the Divine to shine through.
I also understand those who don't like it...bach is a matter of doubt anyway...bach's music is neither a suggestion nor a sign...it sows the suspicion that man can't get everything, no matter what he does...as such he is a planter, not a harvester. .
This is the first time I hear the "French Suites". It is a magnificent work superbly performed by Yuan Sheng. I much prefer the piano to the harpsichord. It is much more lively. Thanks for uploading!

I clarified HOW I know about that cultural wall, so you would not think "only the CIA would have that information"...it doesn't work that way in a free society...so don't impart what you (apparently) know as a standard as the WORLD'S standard. It is not, it is the small exception (govt wise, obviously population wise China is HUGE).
Feel free to respond, but if you do, please surprise me and actually answer my points (happens about one time in a hundred), instead of just trying to insult me or redirect me to nonsense, it will have no effect on me, or likely most anyone else that reads it. Cheers.
Oh yeah, one more question, would you consider anything I just wrote "hate speech" because I'd like to pin down your definition of it. I know my definition, and what I said here isn't even REMOTELY it. I can direct you to some in YT comments if you want to understand what I consider hate speech (blatant mean racism, and the like).
@@MrJdsenior if you are unaware of the facts of political life then there really is no hope for you .You have obviously bought into every western lie available . The only people who believe all these obviously fabricated lies about China are those like yourself and so many of your countrymen who heartily endorse racism towards everyone who is not like them .
@@duboisdvoleur "You have obviously bought into every western lie available"
Great comeback, dude, does that sort of nonsensical crap ever work for you, or is it just to make you feel better about your obvious lack of capabilities?
According to you I am "unaware of facts", have "bought into every Western lie available", and "believe obviously fabricated lies about China" (really, like the one about Tibet...you are an idiot, ANYONE ANYWHERE can verify what happened there, or is the Dali Lhama lying?).
And apparently I am racist, as well. wow, couldn't think of any other useless barbs, backed up by absolutely nothing to throw. I'm disappointed.
Now, you moronic ass hat..how about you try addressing at LEAST ONE of my points. God, you really need some classes on logic and debate. What you did there would convince nobody of anything, save another mentally vacuous person like you appear here. Pathetic. I hope China has better than your sorry ass to defend it. Bring it on back, this time with some actual substance, if you can. LOL
🌹 *Classical music is a bouquet of melodies, each note a fragrant petal in the garden of art.*
It is.
Ah the spirit of Bach, beautifully played by Yuan Sheng. Happy New Year 2023 to all here.
Happy New Year!
Bach created so many masterpieces it's baffling.
Tell me about it!
Yuan Sheng takes many ornamental liberties here, but he makes them sing the way Bach would have 300 years ago on the clavichord. Stunning treatment.
it is all about music, how it touches me, never mind all the theory.
Incredible feeling of the noble sound and the "golden middle".
Bravo!
Yuan Sheng interprets Bach beautifully and performs Bach superbly.
Yuan Sheng's playing is a real joy, light, fluid and full of feeling. Thanks.

I was fortunate to hear Yuan Sheng play Chopin beautifully in Firenze in April. Listening to this recording he's now become one of my favorite interpreters of Bach!
I could listen to Bach all eternity. 🎹🎶🎻
Best interpretation of French Suites so far. Just the right tempo to hear every single note. Many other pianists perform it too fast.

thank you so much for this service. I am having a chaotic day, and the order and beauty of this music is just what I need.
Excellent comment...I agree with you. Mr Sheng's interpretation is simply sublime. So close to Heavens
is wonderful!!!! fantastic!!! please , do you know if Sheng has recorded the English suites from Bach?
gould played you heard gould, im hearing bach here
Perfect for morning, calm, not disturbing, mind clearing music
Yuan Sheng is a truly amazing pianist; he deserves far more recognition by the general public in my humble opinion. He is absolutely amazing; he is able to make music of such wonderfully composed pieces. I have had the pleasure of attending a few of his masterclasses; he is a phenomenal teacher as well!

Fluid, like a river flowing seamlessly, unhindered by elements beyond control. Satisfying to the greatest heavenly heights and even though life may be foreboding, this music so graciously, bravely and brilliantly written by Bach, gives a rational of hope...
Satisfazendo as maiores belezas celestiais, não devemos perder a Esperança jamais!!!
The sarabande in the first suite is totally poignant (but not at all gushing with sentimentality). An extraordinary achievement in balancing lyricism with control. The tempo is spot on. I can't stop listening to this.

The music is certainly heavenly, the pianist is restrained but authentic

We may speak different languages, but music is a language we all understand👍
Amen. And Bach's music is the heritage of all mankind, whether you are in Korea, Ireland, Egypt, or Brazil.
Clarity and poetry. Bach for the mind and heart. Thank you and bravo!
I wasn't aware that Bach made a French Suites and I couldn't imagine it being played better 👏
He is so good! His playing is like Crystal. so clear and the ornamentation and interpretation is just beautiful
one of the most beautiful piano pieces ever written.
Thanks to the genius Mr Yuan Sheng for continuing the legacy of the virtuosic Ms Tureck. I am so grateful to him, Ms Tureck and Mr Gould for Bach.
My favorite music for a peaceful evening.
This performance will remain with us forever!!!

Wonderful!
Bellissimo!

It looks like the Age of Enlightenment produced the most delightful and sophisticated music in human history.
This Yuan Sheng is a genius on piano.
No better Bach than this one played by Yuang Sheng. I very much hope that he will also play the English Suites and the Well-Tempered Clavier.

Thank you, Johann and Yuan! Simply beautiful.
I immediately fell in love with his performance just in a few seconds. So lovely.
Just listening to the opening allemande of the first suite. The soft darkness disguises the brilliant dialogue of basically just two voices as they wind in and out, rolling gently into the timeless space where Bach's music long melodic lines levitate.
Yes yes, we get it. You like the music.

Brilliant music, and brilliantly played. I can hear it 100 times without getting bored.

I find you're rendition of the J.S. Bach French suites absolutely meticulous with smooth counterpoint lines that you add harmonically to the melody go great with the piece. I Thoroughly enjoy you're playing and I'm incorporating into my playing as well. Thank you for you're beautiful interpretation

it's "your rendition", NOT "you're rendition". "you're" is shortened for "you are" and it doesn't make sense. And below, "you're playing", for God's sake

Such a treasure to come across - hours of sheer delight. I am enjoying listening to these as I write at work (journalist). Yuan Sheng plays so beautifully, perhaps the most enjoyable interpretation of Bach piano I have come across. Thanks also for the handy information below - makes it easy to source the sheet music. Thanks for posting!
Great ! After his magnificent performance of the Partitas now the French Suites with Yuan Sheng. Thank You very much !
Incrivelmente maravilhoso!! Brilliant Classics does certainly deserve its name here. As commented somewhere in here - true, no sentimental interpretation. But the emotional content of the phrases is conveyed unhindered by blameless perfection, speaking to my Bach heart. The crystal clear attack, vitality and vigor remind me of Gould. What joy, what delight, what a privilege to be able to listen to such heavenly music for two hours on end. Thank you Piano Classics; love you Yuan Sheng.
Superb; a most sensitive and technically impecable performance. Thank you for making it available!
Wonderful, beautiful, marvelous...

exhuberante!!! Bach mi favorito. Dios le bendijo grandemente.
Maestro Yuan Sheng has achieved a perfect recording here of Bach's French Suites, my favorite bach pieces; and though I've played through the French Suites at various times, I can only aspire to the perfection of Maestro Yuan Sheng. What an absolute joy to listen to these pieces!
Yes, this is sublime ... and yet, the recording by Thurston Dart in 1961on the clavichord still comes back to me after all this time.
A superb choice of instruments to better hear Bach's delicate nuanced harmonies in this rendition of his Suites. Wonderful performance by Mr. Sheng as well.

So wonderfully soul-soothing and mood-heightening musical work !
Hihetetlenül gyönyörű előadás tökéletesen Bach szellemében!!
With Bach the fast tempo piano melody encourages me and makes me focus!
I think Yuan Sheng has gone through several versions of this recording, this being his best. I tell my son. For Schubert, you listen to Eric Lu and Dinu Lipatti. for Bach, Tatiana Nikolayeva and Yuan Sheng. You wont need others. Andras Schiff has gone through several versions. I love his latest.
