In May 2014 the Hungarian cellist István Várdai performed three Bach Suites at an unusual venue in New York: not the storied glamour of Carnegie Hall or the hip 92st St Y, but the Board of Officers Room in the recently renovated Armory on Park Avenue, a room no less redolent of distinguished history: to which he made his own distinguished contribution according to the New York Times, with a recital which concluded with a ‘superb’ performance of the Sixth Suite.
Bach’s iconic solo suites form the pinnacle of the entire cello repertoire, the ultimate challenge and a Mount Everest every young and aspiring cellist has to climb, no matter how often that has already been done.
Young Hungarian cellist István Várdai is winner of the Geneva Competition, 3rd prize Tchaikovsky Competition 2007 and first prize winner of the prestigious ARD competition in 2014. He embarked on a successful international career, having played with Mikhael Pletnev, Adám Fischer, Zoltán Kocsis, and chamber music partner of Gidon Kremer, Mischa Maisky, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Andras Schiff, Klára Würtz and many others.

I have listened to many recordings over the years of Bach Cello Suites by different artists. This wonderful rendition by István Várdai is currently my favorite with his impeccable technique, beautiful sound and well-tempered style. What I appreciate most is how he let the sound of the cello and Bach's creation reign supreme and avoid making his own musicality or interpretation the dominant feature. Thank you for uploading this recording. I will be back here to listen to this superb performance many more times in the years to come.
A year ago, he played this at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. Lights almost out, alone with the cello on the stage, the audience had been breathing silently to the flow of music. It was a magnificent, magical journey, i will not forget.
And the tickets for THIS were less, than a for a movie, which is quite common here. I am grateful for it, but it is still outrageous.

Beyond Istvan's smooth technique and impeccable musicianship, I am so impressed with his tone quality and wondered what instrument he was playing. It turns out he was awarded Jacqueline du Pre's Stradivarius. He so richly deserves it.

Haven't heard this cellist before but I will keep an eye out for him. Understated playing. The dark tones, even rhythm, and clear but not aggressive articulation make each note feel like a heart beat.

I love how each of these individual dances is in itself unique and inventive. I'm glad that there was a period in Bach's career in which he had the opportunity to write music like this as a diversion from writing for the church during his tenure in Cöthen under the Calvinist prince.
The sarabande from the 6th suite is truly divine. All of the suites are masterpieces, but that 6th one is just on its own level
Cello Suite I, prelude is the first impression for all the suites and the prelude here is played wonderfully at a calming and not hurried tempo. Bravo!
This music takes me to my teen age time. Our music teacher a young lady used to play this with her violin very often. I used to listen her with great pleasure. Today it gives me a again great pleasure together some sadness. About 65 years past and it reminds me my youth and that beaitiful teacher who died years ago.

The cello shares much of its range with the human voice. A good cellist and/or composer is aware of this. IMNHO that helps this reach us. I salute ypur good taste in music.

Being a professional musician and an artist otherwise, I know that a lot goes into producing what we are hearing and seeing. It's not the musician alone that creates what I am enjoying here. I agree, that perspective would probably make a poor musician.

Casals was rougher - a lot of attack. The recordings from the 1930s are incredible.
