    Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach
    Artist: Yuan Sheng piano
This is the third instalment of Yuan Sheng’s complete Bach cycle played on the piano, previous issues include the Goldberg Variations and the Italian Concerto/French Overture.
“China’s premier interpreter of Bach”, is what International Piano Magazine called Yuan Sheng. A pupil of Solomon Mikowsky (Manhattan School of Music) and notably Rosalyn Tureck Yuan Sheng extensively studied the performance practice of Baroque music. Equally at home at the harpsichord he has an instinctive feeling for the possibilities, sonorities and touch of the instrument at hand, so that “the listener might easily have imagined the composer at the keyboard” (Boston Intelligencer).
This recent recording of the complete 6 Partitas is again a marvel of elegance, wit, rhetoric and brilliance, played on a modern Steinway.
Besides pursuing an international career Yuan Sheng is Professor of Piano at the Bejing Central Conservatory of Music.

Yuan Sheng is arguably the best piano Bach interpreter appeared during the last two decades. His sound is convincing, crystalline, melodious. His sense of tempo is perfect. The architecture of the music emerges clean, transparent, beauteous. He builds a musical world deeply embedded in the musical world of Bach. His intellectual perception of Bach music is impressive, he may be categorized as a scholar, as his understanding of the music goes beyond the merely sensual. He approaches the musical miracle with straightforwardness and simplicity, letting the miracle happen just from the playing of the notes. No artifice, no nonsense, just the music. Thanks Piano Classics for allowing us mortals to enjoy a glimpse at the inside world of Bach.

please... "the best", what does it mean this nonsense statement regarding music?
there are interpreters and interpreters, it's music not olympic games...
karl bohm mozart requiem it's far away from the timing of all others, gould concerto italiano the same, doesn't exist in music "best or worse", it exists only what u like or don't like...
regarding sheng i don't like, the sound has a so few gamma of timbres, almost monotonous, metronomic, banal, in other words: annoying...
and this is MY point of view...

@@user-tp9hc8iv2x Dear Comrade: I read my comment again. I think that calling it "nonsense" goes against the spirit of the music and the respect due to other opinions. Music IS a very hierarchical world. How do you think the seating arrangements for the violins in the orchestra is made? The "best" seats upfront, and is called the concertino or primary. He is the best of this particular group. Who decides? The stable conductor. For young piano players, there is the Tchaikovsky competition. Who wins the gold medal is the best of that lot. Like it or not, we humans are all different, and some are better than others, as Orwell recognized long ago.

@@DanielRomero-vr6ej Many thanks for your answer pointing to the young icelandic pianist. Vikingur Olafsson. He records for the Deutsche Grammophon seal and has a distinguished career as an interpreter. Besides his several award winning records on Bach, he has a wide scope including Mozart and contemporary composers. He has a blooming international career despite his youth. His Bach playing is not too different from Yuan Sheng, perhaps due to his training in New York. Like Sheng, he has been compared to Glenn Gould.

I've spent the last half century of my life with paints and brushes, engaging with some of the most beautiful places on the planet (Himalayas, Europe, Japan, Central Asia, South Pacific, South America, the American Southwest, etc.), living and depicting the most beautiful moments in those places. The only thing that can make me regret not having spent my life otherwise is listening to classical music. Bach of course, first and foremost, but also the other European Classical masters, and I also have to eclectically include classical Indian music, classical jazz, classical didgeridoo, classical koto and shakuhachi, etc. You get the idea. But Bach does stand alone, his music architectonic masterpieces of the mind and soul. God I wish I could play it! You never see something really until you stop and paint it - the steady accumulation of observation interspersed with gestures of emotion - and you probably can never really know this music unless you can play it and hear it whole with all its parts. I started piano at 57 and have managed a few of the two part inventions, so I can sense the wonders that lay beyond. Maybe in the next lifetime . . . meanwhile sincere appreciation and admiration to those who can, and who share it with us!

Dear Mr. Brian Williams, I've spent all my life looking into the art of movement, dance. In many of its styles classical, folklore, modern, jazz, etc. This includes martial arts, Kong Fu and Tai-ji. Your remark resonates with my 'jealousy" so to speak with the power of music . It always triggered me, as a young dancer, choreographer, (teaching in the academy of dance) and dance history teacher, that no matter how good the dance is, if you take away the music, it is so much less, too much less. Metaphorically speaking, it always 'falls' behind the power of music.
To share with you, this observation, as a movement person, made me decide to dig deep, and search for movement phenomena that can profoundly affect me, as music does. One that is as emotional. I found it, in the architectural works of the group who founded a movement notation, upon which it started to ask what is one movement. In the brain child of this group there emerged an answer. Wonderfully equipped with this (geometrical) answer, for the next 40 years it made dances that are asking where is the edge of the human capacity to engage in pre-concepted, pre-organized, pre-composed movements in a multi jointed body working in the gravity field. Unlike known styles of dance, that have to captivate audience from afar, using big movements [180 degrees angle leg splits, or fast spins on toes, i.e. swan lake etc.] here there were no financial limits, as everyone in this project worked from his own love (6 days a week). And yes, it was nicknamed the 'monastery'.
In such atmosphere there were created clusters of movements, manifested in one body. Making it possible to compose [at last!] with an alphabet of movement. One can make a theme for one hand, which could 'travel' to your other hand, a leg, of your own, or your partners', or , like Bach here, start using reverse mode, cannons, dispositions, and structure manipulations, to at last, have a work of architecture in space and time. Better still, one can hold the manuscript, read, think in the idiom and share movements with other literati. And have a library of dances!
So, now, with the summing experience of 35 years, of pushing the limits of mind and body to express an abstract moving model, in this art of the Eshkol-Wachman movement notation chamber dance group, I would never regret of doing; however, yes, familiar with your comment, I listen to this music, and still am affected in a way only music can bring about.

My first listen to this set is promising. I'd say I'd place it in the top five recordings I know, and I know dozens of recordings of the partitas on piano, harpsichord, clavichord, and one on organ.
I like the way he varies repeats. Not a lot of musicians do that at all, and, frequently when they do they don't know what they're doing or their varied repeats are dissatisfying. Sheng's touch reminds me of the precise, pearl-like sound of Andras Schiff, though you wouldn't mistake him for Schiff. A wonderful set.

Mr. Yuan Sheng is a piano professor of China Central Conservatory in Beijing. He is considered the top Bach pianist in China. He once said, referring to another Bach pianist, Zhu Xiao Mei, "All who play Bach are my brothers." I enjoy his Bach immensely.

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Congratulations Mr Yuan Sheng! How wonderful that your excellent Bach playingskills are regarded as ‘the top Bach pianist in China’! However, I wondered if you could broaden your outlook on top playing Bach pianists by referring to them not only as a ‘brother’ but also as a ‘sister’? Your modelled behaviour might give women a better chance of being included. Martha Argerich has amazing piano skills for example, which also includes the ability to play JS Bach extremely well eg see Martha Argerich play Bach Partita No. 2 - th-cam.com/video/7mFDXNODNyc/w-d-xo.html
